  1. Damn, I can see how this is going to go- I read others' choices & I say "I shoulda picked that one!" Such Sweet Thunder, great choice. This is way too hard!
  2. If I was to pick CDs.....(although I'll probably change my mind tomorrow) Blanton/Webster Blues in Orbit (I keep coming back to this one, I really like it) And His Mother Called Him Bill Far East Suite Newport '56 A couple others in the mix are Nutcracker and Money Jungle.
  3. Patricia Richardson
  4. Jeff Hamilton on brushes on "Back Home Again In Indiana" on the Clayton-Hamilton recording "Explosive". Elvin Jones on brushes on "Shiny Stockings" on "Heavy Sounds".
  5. A good deal, but folks need to be sure to read the fine print- the two listed near at or near this price don't come with boxes and/or booklets. Thanks for posting all those deals, though!
  6. That crossed my mind when I heard a couple of those Rosolino-like arpeggios, but I thought the sound just didn't seem right, though it could have been the recording. Weird-ass clip, though!
  7. I like that you see valve trombone but hear slide trombone.
  8. John Lennon & Miles Davis hanging out
  9. I think that's correct. I remember there being some hubbub in DownBeat at the time about how Blue Note was putting together a group (somewhat in the image The Jazz Messengers) that had to pass audition in order to make the band. I wonder who conducted the auditions, or if there really were auditions. Would it have been Bruce Lundvall? Cuscuna? (Marketing gimmick?) Who made up the original line-up? From memory, I can recall the horns, but not the rhythm section. Kenny Garrett (as), Ralph Bowen (ts), Michael Philip Mossman (t), and ... ? (Was Robert Hurst on bass?) I remember Harry Pickens, piano, Robert Hurst, bass and Ralph Peterson, drums (there were also others in the group later on, like Renee Rosnes and Billy Drummond).
  10. "That's what she said....."
  11. Plus your car was dry because you parked it in the garage down the street for the storm. Way to use that brain!
  12. Richard Long
  13. John Byner! Still very recognizable!
  14. Larry, I for one found this conversation very interesting and enlightening, and I appreciate everyone's contribution. I appreciate hearing the opinions and the civility of the discussion. This certainly isn't a topic that's going to necessarily have a definitive resolution. This kind of stuff is what makes this place interesting! BTW, I love the clips. L & H are tearing up the changes on Airegin! Great to hear the details of the harmony, like setting up the Bb minor in the fifth bar with a movement from F minor to F7, and the modulations starting at bar 9.
  15. I'll take it off your hands! Tried to send a PM but it wouldn't go through- perhaps your inbox is full.
  16. She-who-must-not-be-named. Coultermort.
  17. I've always thought Billy Byers wrote really well for the Basie band. So many great writers- Thad, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Ernie Wilkins, Neal Hefti.....
  18. OK, that last clue turned on the light bulb.
