  1. Happiest of birthdays to you my friend!
  2. Well, this is fun. Some asshole did indeed rip off my SSN and seems to have filed a return with it to defraud the IRS out of a refund. Unexpectedly on this week's agenda: call 1) the IRS ID theft group 2) call the FTC 3) call the SSA 4) call the credit bureaus 5) round up copies of my birth certificate and other important ID documents to file with my return. Goddamn it. An unexpected BS project to take up all your time. Don't you just love it? Good luck.
  3. I don't understand the premise at all.
  4. As I commented when Jim posted this on FB, this was the exact amp my dad had and the one I grew up listening to. I used to love putting on the headphones, turning out the lights and listening while looking at the cool blue lights. It really brings back memories. EDIT: And if you ever decide to sell it, Jim, let me know.
  5. And still too few get the turnaround changes right.
  6. I didn't mean to say I didn't like it, just that it could have been so much better. I'm a Freddie/Lee fan, so I was excited to find this but was hoping for more fireworks.
  7. Happy Birthday! Hope The Moderators © (A Quinn Martin Production) make an appearance!
  8. I guess time really does stand still for Blue Note fans. Glad they didn't make any commemorative pacemakers.
  9. I sure wish that Harold Mabern had been able to play on a better piano. And that Lee had been in better shape. Could have been a lot better that it was.
  10. Congrats to the Lady Aggies! Yeah, after a great men's tourney the final game was really awful. Both teams played horribly, UConn a little less so.
  11. I enjoyed and continue to enjoy this with no guilt whatsoever! I've always liked SD- their tunes contain a lot of interesting harmony, which is rare in pop radio. Sometimes I have no idea what the hell Fagen is talking about, though.
  12. I'm at the Savannah Music Festival for the remainder of the week. I've had (or will have in the next couple days) the opportunity to perform with Wycliffe Gordon, Ron Westray, Terrell Stafford, Marcus Roberts, Rodney Whitaker, Marcus Printup, John and Jeff Clayton and the great Slide Hampton, plus many others. It's an educational event- about a dozen invited high school big bands come and get instruction and clinics, and the clinicians perform at several different times for the students. Friday night is a big final concert featuring three student bands followed by all the clinicians performing an Ellington tribute. My first time at this event, it's a lot of of fun (and a lot of work, too!).
  13. Damn, those Johnny cakes look tasty! I may have to try that.
  14. Just like the Johnny Carson holiday fruitcake.
  15. (.....and the rest in this series)
  16. Great opportunity for an entertaining funeral, though. Her final performance could really do this trick justice.
  17. Oh yeah.....no chance at all of that happening.
  18. I think melody-wise the similarity is only about 4 bars. The chord progressions of the two tunes have more in common(the first eight bars) but it's what I would consider a fairly common chord sequence (i-iv-iim7/V7-i) and probably exists in many other tunes as well. I would say it's very possible that two musicians in different parts of the world could have written similar variations of what is a fairly basic progression and melody. Or maybe KD came up with the melody with a subconscious (or conscious) influence of something he heard. Who knows? That's how many great tunes have been inspired. Really, the most unique aspect of Blue Bossa is where it goes to the key of Db in the third four bar phrase. The rest of the tune, while melodically/harmonically pleasant, is fairly unspectacular(no disrespect to KD intended!). The "easy" part of the tune is why it's such an overplayed jam session choice. And it's usually that four bars in Db where the less experienced players get tripped up.
  19. Man, I see these thread titles and my first thought is "uh oh!". I've long been a fan, through both series, but I first got to know of him through his early stand-up records my parents owned. I had the opportunity to play for his live act when I was in KC. He was very funny and very friendly with the band. A great and very funny guy.
  20. Their offense has been suspect all season. Surprisingly they had a great offensive showing last night, and I think the overall matchup again ND was in their favor. If they can keep the offensive production going (and keep from melting down- they're a little too emotional sometimes) they can get past VCU, but Kansas is looming in the regional final and I don't see much hope there. Still, they've been impressive and have had a good run, even if it goes no further.
