  1. He's done a couple with the Moutin brothers (Moutin Reunion Quartet) that are very good.
  2. I heard they found him up on the roof.
  3. I'm sending you the best birthday wishes I can Musser!
  4. Waterloo/Cedar Falls, my old stomping grounds. Hopefully some folks from the University of Northern Iowa will come out. That school continues to have an outstanding jazz studies program, so appreciation for the blues should be a given.
  5. Great to see big bands continue to exist, especially on the local level. I love writing for big band, it's such a big palette of color and harmony. I've learned so much about playing from writing and arranging. I listened to the samples- the band sounds good, and I especially like your tune, the arrangement sounds beautiful. Congrats to Mr. Pray- please invite him to come join us!
  6. I liked the one w/Betty White too.
  7. HBMW! Keep on swingin!
  8. I believe it's actually "Snickrers".....
  9. It's a pretty easy league to be out of! True! I almost felt bad for him, having to follow Woody and the others. He really (to my ears, at least) sounds weak and tends to BS his way through the changes. I've never heard of him, I wonder how he ended up on this session. Guy had some cojones to play in that company, I'll say that for him!
  10. Well, since we all seem to be talking about various reissues, maybe THIS might settle the case: I dug through my "Down Beat Record Reviews" reference books, and Vol. I has a review of ABC-Paramount 111 (rating is 4 1/2 stars, by the way ), and in the track listing it says "Tricrotism" too. Yes, now that I've been looking there seem to be many cases for both spellings. TricRotism
  11. On the trumpet jam the rhythm section is Lonnie Smith, piano; Peck Morrison, bass; Walter Perkins, drums. In the liners for this one there was a picture of a poster advertising another tribute featuring Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Dorham, Bill Hardman, Woody Shaw and Tommy Turrentine(also in 1968 I assume)but at another club called Afro-Disiac (also in Jamaica, Queens). Holy crap! According to the liners, Lee had to cancel and was replaced by Joe Newman. Evidently the session we've been discussing was the only one recorded (unfortunately).
  12. This is the Lucky Thompson version w/Pettiford on bass. Odd that this one would be mispelled. EDIT: And thanks to whomever changed the thread title. I guess I've been pronouncing the title wrong my whole life, although everyone I've talked to has done the same. I'd never noticed the inconsistent spellings until now. Actual, the "correct" word is much harder to say. :rsmile:
  13. OK, it's spelled w/o the second "R" on the Lucky Thompson side, but the Oscar Peterson and Joe Pass/NHOP duo versions have the title as "Tricrotism". It's odd that the LT version with Pettiford on bass would be the one that's mispelled. EDIT: After googling both titles it seems to be split between the two spellings, although obviously Tricrotism is an actual word.
  14. Yeah, I saw that definition. But there's no second "R" in the tune title.
  15. I just finished writing an arrangement of this for big band. It was interesting checking out several different recordings, there are many different variations of the tune out there. It's a great line with great changes. In Db, no less! One thing I was wondering is if anyone knows where the title came from? I've looked around a bit and haven't come up with an answer, so I thought I'd bring it to the place where all knowledge is kept.
  16. Why? Did anyone say anything negative? I just said she was lip syncing. No judgement. I like her singing, I'd just prefer to hear her actually sing live rather than lip sync.
  17. Saw her this morning on the Today show. Lip syncing, but still looks great!
  18. I've edited your post to describe my favorite drinking game.
  19. This one, from FreshSound... That's it, thanks Brownie! The other trumpet player on the disc was Walter Kelly- I wasn't familiar with him, but he sounded way out of his league.
  20. pffft. That's nothing. Idiot me put a pillow with a small tear in it in the washing machine once. Then, despite little bits left behind in the washer, put it in the dryer. ... With other stuff. That's when the real fun began. Well, my Great Moment In Laundry was when a tube of lip balm made it to the dryer and then opened up, ruining about six pairs of pants.
  21. I have a live CD from that club with Kenny Dorham, Woody Shaw, Bill Hardman, Richard Williams and Blue Mitchell. Some excellent moments, especially from KD and Woody.
  22. That's kinda where I'm at. I just hope it's a good close game that's not decided by the refs. I'm having a couple friends over and will be grilling. Fajitas, margaritas, queso and salsa.
  23. What's up with all those weird jazz compilations that have appeared lately? They seem to be very randomly organized.
