  1. Shorter obviously has an efficient internal editing process whereas he doesn't need to play a lot of notes to "play the shit out of the changes". His economy and thoughtful note choices achieve that result IMO, and his compositions reflect that same process of avoidance of "noteyness". "Playing the shit out of the changes" to me is as much about saying more with less as it is playing all the time with little space. Wayne can kill with a single note, usually as much because of attitude as content and also the space he surrounds it with. One whose measuring stick is based more on criteria from the bop era might think of that economy as a weakness. I find much merit in both approaches.
  2. IMO- don't engage him anymore- forget about him. Cross him off the list. Life's too short to waste energy on BS like this.
  3. Very nice, love the dancers. I always liked his version of "I Can See Clearly Now".
  4. Now that's truly impressive.
  5. DukeCity sent me a lead sheet with the verse and changes. It's nothing fancy, but it might serve as an intro for an arrangement I'm working on. Thanks Glenn!
  6. Please refrain from this kind of thing.
  7. Does anyone know if the tune Polkadots and Moonbeams has a verse (or refrain, whatever), and if so, is there a recorded version of it? Thanks in advance.
  8. I love this side.
  9. It appears to be legit, but it might be an assistant or manager posting sometimes (or all of the time, who knows?). Tom Harrell is also on FB, but it seems to be run by a manager.
  10. A happy belated birthday to my favorite jazz composer! I opened Facebook this morning and saw "Wayne Shorter has accepted your friend request". That was a good way to start the day.
  11. Just a reminder that this airs tonight on PBS. I saw it last night and it's very well done IMO.
  12. I just caved and ordered the Farlow. Damn all of you and your positive reviews! It always seems to go like this: "Gee, I don't have much Tal Farlow in my collection. Well, I don't need the whole box, I'll just get The Swinging Guitar. Oh yeah, and This is Tal Farlow. And The Guitar Artistry of Tal Farlow. Hey, I can get them all plus other stuff on the Mosaic? Well, I might as well just do that then.......I'll actually be SAVING money!!*.........etc.etc." Game over. I actually got to jam with Tal Farlow once back in the 80s while on a SS Norway jazz cruise w/Woody's band. I'm not sure I realized how cool that was at the time. *ultimate rationalization alert
  13. That link doesn't seem to work, Lon.
  14. Harlem in Montmarte This is a new doc which will be aired nationwide this Wednesday, August 26th at 8:00PM EST. It's about jazz artists (James Reese Europe, Josephine Baker and Sidney Bechet, among others)who relocated to France in the period between the first and second World Wars. The link provides more information. There is also a group of musicians who perform during the show (including Leon Anderson, drummer and director of Jazz Studies here at Florida State). Should be worth checking out!
  15. I don't have these recordings, but I wanted to suggest that if nothing else you could probably contact him directly- he teaches at the U. of North Florida. Maybe you've already done this, I don't know....worth a try, though.
  16. I'm with Jim on this - not having seen the new one. After Pulp Fiction he seems to be trying to keep up with the kids. I also would add Reservoir Dogs as one of his best. I'm almost always curious to see his films, though.....
  17. I gotta get me one o' them coleslaw plants.
  18. NW: A very interesting tribute to Don Hewitt on 60 Minutes.
  19. Baby Dodds Julia Child Herbie Mann
  20. If anyone's interested, Newbury has Sonny's The Freelance Years (which consists of his Contemporary and Riverside material) for $19.99. Not bad for a 5 CD box! I'm just sayin'. Here....
  21. Nice clip! But who's that on piano? (Listed as Lou Levy, but looks like Pete Jolly to me.) No idea who the bassist is. Nice clip indeed! I think it's Pete Jolly & Bob Magnusson.
  22. It arrived yesterday.
  23. If that, then this....
