I think he still has a good sound, but as he has gotten older his agility and flexibility has decreased. I think in general trombone players often can play into their mature years with more success than trumpet players (the larger trombone mouthpiece is more forgiving than the trumpet mouthpiece), but nearly all brass players have increasing problems with chops as they get older.
I prefer Curtis in his prime years, but what you need to keep in mind that this is a trombonist (the only trombonist) who recorded w/Bud Powell and Coltrane. He is a legend on the instrument and continuing to play is probably what keeps him going- I think if he quit playing he wouldn't be around for long. For that reason I'm willing to forgive that he's showing his age. There's a soulfulness that comes with age that one doesn't get without putting in the time.
I have the orignal LP and am really surprised (but pleased) that there is enough unissued material for a 2 Cd set. Great session.
I've heard most of the unissued material and it's very good.
I was checking out the FS site and saw they had the Frank Rosolino/Conte Candoli session Conversation available as a two disc set. I was hoping this was going to be a Mosaic release (and had even traded emails with Cuscuna lobbying for it) but am glad to see it come out in any form. It's a great session, and there was much more great material not on the original LP.
I only do the big b'fast on Saturday or Sunday. During the week it's usually toast and/or a grapefruit or banana, eaten standing over the kitchen sink.
Always coffee though! Fresh ground beans through a French press and into the thermos and off to school (I keep some half & half in my little fridge at school).
Preheating the thermos w/hot water really helps keep it hot through most of the day, although I'm usually done drinking coffee by early afternoon.
This morning, a ham & cheddar omelet with asparagus and red onion. Also a smoothie (fuji apple, banana, strawberries, yogurt & orange juice) and some toast made from this great rosemary & peppercorn bread I found at the store. Sunday morning, baby!
Hmmmmm, only 23 posts. You're a ghost. You should post more often.
Don't let "not have anything to say" stop you. Have you met Allen Lowe?
Happy Birthday!
