What to do when the sweet-tooth hits...
Free For All replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was in a Target store today and couldn't believe the amount of Halloween candy in stock. Mountains of it. I had to keep walking. I'm still a fan of the candy corn & peanut combo. I avoid keeping it in the house, I have no willpower. -
Grllled burgers stuffed w/blue cheese. Man, I loves me some funky cheese! Also, grilled corn & asparagus.

I'm surprised that such a dedicated fan didn't pre-order it. He/she would likely have it by now instead of having to ask us if it's being carried by his/her local store- of course not knowing where he/she is from we can't really be of much assistance.

Wow, that sounds like the munchies to me. You smokin' some of that Michigan Green, Jimbo? You been hangin' w/Randy? -
This looks like a great batch- I've already preordered at Amazon.

The big panic here last Friday was apparently due in part to a leaked email from a local government employee that said there was "sure to be a major shortage". By Friday night pretty much every place was sold out, and here it is Thursday and STILL most places that sell gas are STILL OUT. So yes, there does seem to be a shortage, but it was caused by local people panicking and hoarding, not because of any hurricane issues. It's totally bizarre. I had plenty of gas in the tank last Friday and thought it seemed unnecessary to wait in those looooong lines, but I also thought for sure things would be back to normal by now, almost a week later. This seemed to be a fairly local anomaly, not as much of an issue elsewhere in the state. There is some gas around, but people have had to search for it, sometimes driving way out of town. Amazing how little it takes to throw things into total chaos! Lemmings over the cliff.

DEEP! I got to meet Barry, the first time was when I was attending a Stan Kenton jazz camp (as a high school student) in the mid 70s. Lin Biviano had a big band on tour and booked a night at the music camp (probably a one-off in the midst of a longer tour) and my memory of it was that it was a smoking band! Barry had an amazing knowledge of recordings, he knew personnel and BN catalog numbers off the top of his head. I remember being intimidated by his knowledge and general intensity (I was like, 16 years old!) and had not had much exposure to players at that point. My impression of him was very positive, and although I didn't know him well I felt very sad when later I heard of his passing. As I later became a "road dog" I came to better understand the trials, tribulations and temptations of those who experienced that bizarre lifestyle. I just remember how cool it was to meet a real "jazz cat"!

A hope for those with hearing loss/tinnitus?
Free For All replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I have a moderate case of tinnitus from years of playing in big bands (sitting in front of trumpets and next to drummers ). I really only notice it at night when I'm trying to go to sleep (would someone please answer the friggin' phone??). I sleep with some kind of ambient noise (usually a fan) and that takes care of it. -
The Dave Holland tune Pass It On (which I'm assuming will be part of this recording) has been recorded several times in different groups. There was a good version on a record called (IIRC) Rhythm in Mind w/Von Freeman, Steve Coleman, Kenny Wheeler and others. It's a nice tune.

Things you wish nobody had thought up...
Free For All replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I really hate those hard plastic shells that things come packed in. You need major tools to cut through it (I've cut myself more than once on those sharp edges) and there's no doubt that material will probably never disappear from landfills. The other things I hate are those little security stickies on CDs and DVDs. Sometimes it's a bit of a project to remove them. -

Very strange last possession by Philly. Cowboys are a good team for sure; lots of egos, but that's part of the game as long as you can "walk the walk". It will be interesting to see how both of these teams fare over the season. This was a fun game to watch! Home run derby! -

As always, the Chiefs are more than happy to oblige. They excel at restoring other teams' confidence. -

Deshaun Jackson gets Bonehead Of The Year Award. Unbelievable! He's very lucky they still scored. Between that and TO's BS it's marring an otherwise good game. TO is all about TO, seems like he's regressed a bit. -

The real Chef Boyardee! That was from the time when it was a big deal to be able to make a spaghetti dinner from a package. I still like the Chef Boyardee pizza sauce, though. Probably because I grew up with it. I love 50s TV.

I checked it out. Very funny dialogue, and the commercials are hilarious too. The car accident special effects were stunning!
