  1. Tempers are rising in the French camp. Anelka is about to be expelled after he insulted coach Raymond Domenech during the Mexico-France game! ESPN story The story in today's L'Equipe, the national sports paper:
  2. The Oscar Pettiford Orchestra 'In Hi-Fi' (ABC Paramount, mono)
  3. Saw that when I started reading the news today. It was my first laugh of the day TheLBC posted this earlier: Please let the missing North Koreans show up at the USA embassy. From the Johannesburg Times: 'Lost' North Korean players 'found'
  4. The trouble with Jabulani!
  5. Dozens of Japanese CDs appeared at my favorite store, all at very reasonable prices. Among the ones I purchased: - Steve Kuhn 'Sing Me Softly of the Blues' (Venus) - Steve Kuhn 'Love Walked In' (Venus) - Michel Sarbady 'Five Cats' Blues' - Warne Marsh 'Warne Out + 5' (Interplay)
  6. Not to be too patriotic, but France is the winner in the WC worst team competition so far!
  7. They're being murdered! Too bad the guillotine is not being in use these days
  8. Bertrand, I have the Fontana vinyl. Am I missing something that's on CD and not on the LP?
  9. Yes Germany seemed on an off day but they faced Serbia with a 10-man team most of the game. And Serbian goalie Stojkovic stopped a rather weak penalty shot by Podolski! Quite an upset this match!
  10. Earl Hines 'My Tribute to Louis' (Audiophile Records, stereo) Amazing the number of masterful solo piano albums Earl Hines recorded!
  11. Listened to that one a while ago when I was on a Stanley Turrentine listening mood (which happens fairly often). One of his best date! My copy 'Liberty/UA 1970' looks better than the one chewy linked It also bears the Rudy Van Gelder stamp on both sides!
  12. France sinks to a new low: That's Franck Ribery going down...
  13. Perfect example of coach Domenech's doomed tactics. He starts this decisive game with a forward trio of Anelka, Govou and Ribery. Govou and Anelka proved in the previous match that they were not fit to play in this World Cup. Ribery barely tried! Mexico had a cohesive team and deserved to win!
  14. Just one more match (against South Africa) and France will finally bid ADIEU to Domenech. Good riddance!

    Gato Barbieri

Very glad to see Gato Barbieri getting praise here Spent a number of memorable evenings listening to Gato and Don Cherry when they played at the Chat qui Peche club in Paris' Latin Quarter. Gato and I became friends after I showed him a photo of John Coltrane with Gato's wife Michele I had taken backstage in the Salle Pleyel in 1965 when Coltrane played there. I did not know who the woman was at the time I took the photo. I saw the Barbieris when visiting Rome in the spring of 1968. I accompanied them on the set of Bernardo Bertolucci's film 'Partner' at Cinecitta. Bertolucci was keen on using Gato's music on his films. That turned out to be 'Last Tango in Paris'. Bertolucci turned up with Marlon Brando at one of Gato's concert at the Salle Wagram. He liked the setting so much he used the Salle Wagram for several scenes of the movie. Passion is a narrow word for the intensity of Gato's music at the time. He was very much interested in listening to Trane, Pharoah and Albert Ayler among others at the time.
  16. John Coltrane 'Settin' the Pace' (Prestige, mono, yellow label)
  17. Wrong tempo!?! Signed: Nobody!
  18. Bill Dixon's final appearance was at the Festival International de Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville, Canada, last month: Tribute in today's Ottawa Citizen.
  19. The South Africa team fell back on Earth. With two goals by forward Diego Forlan, Uruguay played much better than during their opening match against France. They deserve to go to the second round. Most impressive team from the first round games was Germany! What else is new?
  20. Would hate to see a confirmation of this!
  21. 1-0 for Switzerland Can't believe it! The Swiss team had several Federers in their team, Spain lacked a Nadal. The Spaniards seemed to be back at facing their usual jinx in major soccer competitions (exception was the Eurocup 2008 when they beat Germany in the final! The Swiss eleven ran a tight defense. They deserved to win!
  22. Phineas Newborn 'Harlem Blues' (Contemporary, stereo)
  23. My list is very short: David Oistrakh Can't remember any other that did not disappoint me at some time or other!
  24. Not the best team from Brazil judging from yesterday's match. No panache. The North Korea players were a good surprise. A no-nonsense team.
  25. I was not aware of this... I still have the Vega French pressing (Impulse IMP 50) of the album. Purchased when it came out in the early '60s. The 'Microsillon incassable Longue Durée' vinyl has the 10:40 original version of 'Afro-Blue'.
