Lester Young's 'These Foolish Things' (the Aladdin version) very close second is The Jazz Messengers' 'Soft Winds' from the Cafe Bohemia album.

Wasn't the improvement in sound quality of the RVG Birth of the Cool due to the discovery of original--or at least closer to original--sources that had not been available for prior releases? The liner notes to the reissue indicate that it was RVG who went back to the masters of the original tapes, something that no one had bothered to do before!

Jim Marshall was one of the very best! Some more of his jazz photos (Dolphy, Cohn, Hawkins, Webster)...

I have stopped purchasing those BN reissues several years ago. Glad to get some of them when they added extra material. The only one that was really a revelation as far as the sound was concerned was the RVG Birth of the Cool. Van Gelder did wonders on that one. Maybe he had more interets/fun with it since he had not taken part in the original sessions!

Bob Thiele reissued many of the sides he recorded for Signature on his Doctor Jazz label in the '80s. The reissues included LPs by Shelly Manne, Coleman Hawkins/Lester Young, Johnny Bothwell, Flip Phillips, Anita O'Day among others.

Looks like Fred Cohen (the Jazzrecordcenter) had a good day yesterday with his eBay auctions. He had a collection of BN, Prestige, Transition, etc... LPs up for grabs. Most of them in nearmint condition. This is how the Coltrane photo by William Claxton looks like: Strange that Lonehill went for a reversed image! Were they trying to fool somebody?

Anita O'Day 'Anita' (Verve, mono)

Strange that the two Gil Evans albums 'Out of the Cool' (Impulse 4) and 'Into the Hot' (Impulse 9) did not make the 20-bit list! Some of the best music from the label.

Would not rate this Tarzan that high but I must say I have enjoyed the album. Will have to relisten to it to check on the Frank Rosolino solos which are among his best. Got a mint mono copy from Fred Cohen's Jazz Record Center several years ago at a rather reasonable prize! The cover was worth the cost!
