It is a 6CD box set, one of several sets that Classics released (other boxed sets included previously released from the Classics series by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald among others). Duke Ellington vol. 3

BBS, you are right, it is Hot Lips Page. Hot Lips is more identifiable on another image from the same jam session (image link does not work). Wish there was some audio from that jam!

Charles Mingus, Music Written for Monterey 1965,
brownie replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Re-issues
From what I understand, Sue took care of the day-to-day business including shipping to customers. -
Earl Warren is just below Lester. Mezz Mezzrow is on clarinet with drummer Kansas Fields next to him. Jo Jones and Sid Catlett flank Kansas Fields to make sure he does not miss a beat!! Looks like Sweets on trumpet!

Charles Mingus, Music Written for Monterey 1965,
brownie replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Re-issues
I still have the coupon which was part of a six-page brochure from Charles Mingus Records that came with the original 2LP album. That Monterey 1965 release is listed at $7.98 (plus $1.00 'on all European orders to cover shipping costs') -
I have very positive feelings about this Intégrale Armstrong series and will get the new volume as soon as it shows up. Those Frémeaux sets are complete, indeed. Sound is very good to my ears. Frémeaux did a splendid job with their Intégrale Django Reinhardt. Hope they will tackle an Intégrale Ellington soon!

Volume 7 of the Intégrale Louis Armstrong from Frémeaux & Associés is coming out... It goes from 1934 to 1937. Tracks listing.

Joyeux anniversaire au Roi Ubu! The Swiss post offices are to be congratulated too for delivering the book in time for your birthday! It was not planned this way but I am bery glad they delivered the package on this day to be remembered! Enjoy being 30! This should be a glorious year!

It was recorded at Air Studio, New York. Recording engineer was Kazunori Sugiyama, assisted by Emi Sugiyama. Producers credit go to La Nef des Musiques Label Bleu Regard Killer album with Charles Tyler and Denis Charles!

French saxophonist Jean-Claude Fohrenbach, one of the best French musician that emerged after World War Two, died on March 30. He was 84. The innovative saxophonist played with Kenny Clarke, Roy Eldridge and others. He was a close friend of Boris Vian. A double CD of some of his recordings was published recently as part of the Jazz in Paris collection.

Martial Solal playing better than ever at 80...

then you probably haven't seen this one... saw one used a few weeks ago for 7 euro, kicking myself for not getting it, cheapest copy on amazon.de is 75 euro... That Arnold Ross date for French Vogue was also reissued in Japan: Got a copy of this 25m36s CD reissue for €3 at one of the regular biannual sales here! Arnold Ross was a familiar name for me since he was the piano player in one of the first album I ever bought, a 10incher from a JATP concert with a David Stone Martin cover Ross also recorded with Gillespie for Vogue when he was in Paris back in 1952 playing piano for Lena Horne. That's the trio playing for Lena Horne that recorded the Ross album for Vogue!

I did! What a splendid disc it is! One of Solal's best solo album. Wish CamJazz had included more from those Village Vanguard sets. Solal is 81 now and plans to end public appearances soon. Caught him at the Duc des Lombard last week. One of eight solo sets. Full of surprises. Will try not to miss further appearances.

It's an easy read if your French is OK. If you managed to get through a math book in french, you should not have too many problems. I had a lot of problems reading math books in french when I had to

Mais oui. It's a 7m42s track with Solal featured in a long solo. Also Solal plays great comping behind the Kentonians' solos.

Thanks Niko for that link. Missed that one! Did you get the book? A very readable volume.

Jimmy Bunn was the piano player on another classic 'The Chase' by Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, the 1947 session for Dial. He was also on the Helen Humes All Stars 1945 date on Philco/Aladdin that had Snooky Young, Willie Smith and Lester Young in the lineup!

The Clarence Profit Memoir CD is listed on Amazon.fr. Been a fan of Profit ever since Merritt released the vinyl album by him. That one continues to be spinned.

Blues Martial This one's not a trio track but part of a 1956 session with 'Kentonians'' Vinnie Tano, Carl Fontana, Don Rendell, Curtis Counce and Mel Lewis. It's on vol. 3 of the Complete Vogue Recordings series.
-
Martial Solal has rarely dabbled with the blues. The closest he seems to have gone on that road would be on the 1954 trio side 'Farniente' which is available on vol. 1 of The Complete Vogue Recordings series.

Problem is that there are different numbers on front/spine and then the back. I think most of us will go for the number on front and spine. So Crolla becomes 04, Jean-Marie is 05 and Anachronic Jazz Band is 06. Oops, Crolla may have 06 on the front, but I am pretty sure it does have 04 on the spine. I'll check again tonight. It's really only a problem for the truly obsessed. The truly obsessed can always check the excellent site by a former Organissimo forums participant (Bonjour Volkher ) Jazz in Paris There is a note there on the numbering confusions in the recent releases.

There's a full chapter on Jimmy Bunn in the book 'San Quentin Jazz Band' which I mentioned in this Earl Anderza thread.. Don't think this excellent book has been translated yet. Author Pierre Briancion brought in a lot of new informations on some of the musicians who spent time in San Quentin. Bunn was one of them. He was there for the usual reason. He was pretty active with the San Quentin prison jazz band and played with Dupree Bolton and Art Pepper among others. He was released in December 1967. His attempts at getting back on the music scene were not successful. The book mentions he was a chauffeur for a retired persons home in his final years (was also a chauffeur for Dorothy Donegan!). Bunn died on March 24, 1997 in LA. His death went unreported.

Jim, the only thing wrong with the album is that it took so long to appear on CD (no doubt due to Marge's financial problems). It's a spirited and disciplined session very much in the spirit of the Dameronia recordings. 'Filet de Sole' should be on your menu! Bon appétit!

I was not aware that jazz guitarist Marty Grosz was the son of the great George Grosz. He is now trying to get back some of his father's stolen artworks. Der Spiegel story
