That's Dickie Wells. Dickie Wells, of course! Many thanks, Chuck, for enlightening me! Now tell me: where is the sound? Another unidentified musician... http://images.google.com/hosted/life/l?img...:life%26hl%3Dfr

Thanks for the recommendation, Chris. I have been to shorpy.com in the past. But I do have a very sentimental feeling for the archives of Life magazine. I spent hours at the American Library in Paris on the Place de l'Odéon when I was a teenager. The Library had a complete collection of Life magazines. I grew a passion for news photography there. The passion is still intact! The fact that the collection of Life images is now available so extensively on the internet is one of the best things I have seen on the web!

The Life Magazine archives are a goldmine! A lot of extraordinary material is included there. Like this one! http://images.google.com/hosted/life/l?img...:life%26hl%3Dfr Who is the trombone player showing up next to Lester Young on this photo by Gjon Mili on the set of 'Jammin' the Blues'? Can't recall a mention of a trombone player on the credits to Mili's film.

"Jazz seen" is no longer available, i think it's out of print. Check the second hand book shops. But "jazz life" (including the 1500 $ edition !) is available on Amazon.com It's recently been reissued by Taschen in a very slightly smaller (still pretty big) and much cheaper edition: The Jazz Life

1,000 Jazz Covers
brownie replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The book is out by now. It is reasonably priced. But it's just a book with 1,000 jazz covers. The good and the not so good. You can preview the full opus when you click on 'Leaf through!' here -
The Ken Vail's chronology 'Miles' Diary' states that Miles Davis joined the Gillespie big band on April 5, 1947 for a one-week engagement at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom. The book also notes that Miles' close friend Freddie Webster died on April 1, 1947. Kenny Dorham was no longer with the Dizzy big band by that time.

Bertrand, I attended the 1969 Antibes-Juan les Pins festival (and the Cecil Taylor appearances at the Maeght Foundation in nearby Saint-Paul de Vence that same week... Those were the days!). The Miles Davis group played the evening concerts. To the best of my recollection, Hutcherson-Land quintet played the afternoon concerts.

Marc Moulin passed away last Friday. He died of throat cancer. http://www.marcmoulin.com/ Not much jazz interest in his jazz dabblings but an interesting allaround arranger!

This was reissued on CD by Marge a couple of years ago as a very limited release (a couple of hundred copies) which was mostly distributed in Japan only. Problem with the reissue was the use of the original cover photo. The photographer wanted a lot of money for the reuse of the image. Hope the conflict has been resolved by now. Have yet to see a copy of this new Marge issue. I am happy with the original vinyl!

Reinier, no mastering credit on this Fresh Sound reissue. Since they managed to include an hitherto unreleased 'I Cried For You', I would tend to think they had access to some sort of original material. I am very much aware that Fresh Sound has used needledrops for some of their reissues. This 'United Notions' does not seem to belong to that category. The sound is excellent to my aging ears -_-

Yes that was her final record for Capiitol. Most of the songs are from Broadway shows from around that time. The latin touch comes from Ernie Freeman's pen. No solos except for a brief alto (sounds like Bud Shank) contribution. Odd that this does not seem to have been reissued even if it was not one of June's very best album. Her voice had gotten a bit harsher by then but still kept a lot of its juvenile charm. Have a mono copy of that Capitol. Probably one of the last mono releases!

News story from AFP: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080725/ts_al...in_080725153525 The little giant went away! A giant loss!

Joyeux anniversaire Marcel ... ... and please keep boppin'!!!

The reissue is another splendid job from Fresh Sound. Th CD includes one additional track which makes its first appearance on disc. It's 'I Cried for You', a feature for Bobby Jaspar!

Critic/musicologist Daniel Caux passed away last week in Paris. Caux was one of the most energetic supporter of freejazz. He helped organize concerts by Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra and others at the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul de Vence on the French Riviera. As a producer with the record company Shandar he put out recordings of Maeght Foundation concerts. His enthusiasm and openness to music are being missed!

1,000 Jazz Covers
brownie replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
It's featured on the Taschen website now Details are available here: http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/...jazz_covers.htm Looks like the 496-page book should be out in September. Have lowered my expectations on it since there seems to be images from non original releases. Among others, the 'Explosive Side of Sarah Vaughan' cover shows the British Columbia issue, not the original US Roulette LP. And there seems to be more like this -
Laton, you can get 'Lestorian Mood' on this rather well done double CD from England: It's available from the regular music providers! The reissue includes the master takes from that All Stars session.
