I have this first edition No Zorn text in the CD liner notes. Interesting revision of Dorham/Mobley/Sonny Clark (and others) compositions... as for Louise Brooks :wub:

Don't know about a second drummer on that date but Eddie Bert is quoted in John Chilton's 'The Song of the Hawk' as having 'vivid memories' of the session: When I recorded with him (Hawkins), Billy Taylor, Milt Hinton, Jo Jones and Emmett Berry, he had just gotten off a plane and his horn had come through baggage. So we were forty-five minutes into the date and he was still oiling his horn. We had no music and the producer got nervous. Well, we did the whole date with head arrangements and finished on time.

Can't find notes by John Zorn on that hat ART CD 6005. The booklet includes notes by Peter Watrous dated October 1987. There is also a 12-page catalogue of Hat releases with small images of those plus a two-page historical survey by Art Lange dated 1986. Can mail you the Watrous notes if interested...

Melba Liston conducted the orchestra (and wrote the arrangements for the Jazzland album by Junior Mance 'The Jazz Soul of Hollywood'. The album was reissued as part of this Fresh Sound CD: She also wrote a number of arrangements for the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra back in the late '50s including 'My Reverie' and 'Anitra's Dance'.

No turning back for me! The enjoyment of music has never been a hobby to me, but a passion. I thought years ago that when I would retire I would stop buying new items and just keep my listening time to what I already have. But I continue to look for so many items and discover/rediscover the full extent of the music. How beautifully exciting to be able to listen to Johnny Dodds, then Ruby Braff, Warne Marsh before checking some Sun Ra. It never stops. And I don't want it to stop.

Another (bad) sign that the label is going belly up. A number of recent Chronological Classics releases have been appearing at some of the Paris shops that sell discounted DVDs and CDs. They are on sale at €3,90. The same shops had a number of Masters of Jazz CDs on sale at discounted prices several years ago when the label gave up

Roy's stay with the Basie band was an unhappy experience. It lasted some twelve weeks. From June to early September 1966. In John Chilton's book 'Roy Eldridge Little Jazz Giant', Roy is quoted as telling Phil Shaap 'It was worse than being in a white band. I had buddies in the white bands, but in Basie's Band the only cat I was real tight with was 'Lockjaw'. When the band took an intermission, all the cats would split and I'd be left sitting up on the bandstand''

Sonny Salad was an alto saxophonist who played mostly in Ray McKinley's big band. His main claim to fame was being part of the band that recorded Neal Hefti's 'Repetition' with Charlie Parket for the 'Jazz Scene' project.
