porcy62, the weekend in Paris will go fast. If you want to visit museums, suggest you restrict yourself to a couple of the big ones. The Louvre is huge and you should try to spend several hours in one specific wing (the main gallery and adjacent rooms, if you want to have a close look at La Gioconda!). The Musée d'Orsay is a must see too. A huge lot of great paintings plus a wonderful setting. It closes on Mondays while the other museums close on Tuesdays. If you want to see the new architecture, try to see the recently opened Musée du Quai Branly with its striking architecture by Jean Nouvel. My usual recommendation for visitors to Paris in a hurry is an evening boat ride on the Seine river. It's magic! Since you'll be near the Sorbonne (in the Latin Quarter) and want to taste oysters, you might try Le Bar A Huitres at 33 rue Saint-Jacques, that's at the corner of the Boulevard Saint-Germain. If you want to visit vinyl record shops on Monday, you'll be out of luck since both Paris Jazz Corner and Crocojazz are closed that day. You can console yourself with a visit to the Joseph Gibert record shop on the Boulevard Saint-Michel (a stone throw from the Sorbonne!). It's open on Mondays. They have a great selection of new and secondhand CDs. PM me if you need more details!

Why indeed are we waiting for a reissue. Toshiba reissued this as part of a Pacific Jazz albums package back on March 25, 1992. Old vinyl freaks still bless them for this!

Oops, me bad. My earlier posts in this thread were about the Mosaic 1936-1940. Read this too fast. This being the Mosaic forum, I assumed it was about the Small Group set I Don't have that Sony 1927-1962 box!

In France, musicians were playing out from around the mid-sixties. Early practicioners included Michel Portal, Barney Wilen, Jean-Louis Chautemps, Henri Texier, Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Jacques Thollot, Aldo Romano. Pianist François Tusques had a band around that time that included Bernard Vitet on trumpet, François Janneau and Portal on reeds, bass player Beb Guerin, etc... The arrival in France of Cecil Taylor, Marion Brown, Sonny Murray, the Art Ensemble, Anthony Braxton, Leo Smith, Jeanne Lee, Steve McCall and others helped as stimulants to the French players.

Hans, I am pretty sure noise reduction has been applied. I was not expecting miracles and am just enjoying the music. I have heard various versions of these sessions and they all sounded pretty bad. The pre-WWII Columbia recordings have always been a problem (the glorious Count Basie sides are about the same!). Will report later when I have heard more from the set.

My set was shipped yesterday ... and was delivered today Starting to listen to it and am more than happy with the sound on the early sides. Have not had time to compare but they sound much better than the French CBS vinyl twofers that I tried to quench my ducal 30s thirst with until now!
