  1. Chronogical Classics issued a couple of boxes with their Louis Armstrong releases. I have Volume 2 '1932-1940. The black box houses six CDs. Great set!
  2. Never purchased a recorded cassette. Used cassettes only to record off the radio. I had a number of interesting broadcasts. Still have the cassettes but I have no way of playing them nowadays. My cassette players are home are all broken. Used to listen to cassettes from the player in the cars. My current car has no cassette player!
  3. Freddie Hubbard 'A Soul Experiment' (Atlantic, stereo)
  4. Mary Lou Williams accompanies Stan Getz at the 1978 jazz festival in Nice. J.C. Heard is on drums. Is that John Heard on bass? http://youtube.com/watch?v=HgWGfZGBz64
  5. Some other favorites: Lady of Lavender
  6. I thought I was doing well with my $20 copy of the LP ! 'Iron Sheep' turned out a bit pricier though. Found the 'Iron Sheep' original during one of my regular visits to the Porte de Clignancourt flea market which was vinyl heaven back in the pre-CD days. Cost me more than a quarter but less than $20 Aaah those were the days!

A quite nice session. I have this on vinyl, thanks to the Fresh Sound vinyl reissues program of a long time ago! I should get that CD reissue which includes additional material! Go for it, Late. You won't be disappointed!
  8. The Revolutionary Ensemble 'The People's Republic' (Horizon)
  9. I purchased the two UA originals soon after they came out. 'Way, Way Out' was in a $0,25 cutout bin! The double CD added very welcome material to those two albums. As Late already mentioned, the music needs repeated listening to really get into but it is a very rewarding experience!
  10. The Nat Pierce Keynote session is included in the recently released FreshSound double CD 'Nat Pierce Kansas City Memories'

The Jazz Factory Fruscella set is highly recommended. It has all of Fruscella's music that has been released in very decent sound. Missing is the Tony Fruscella Brooklyn Jam 1952 music that came out in Japan on M&I BaldwinStreet at some point also announced the appearance of more unreleased Fruscella but this seems to have been shelved.
  12. This is really sad news!
  13. From this album: Stan Levey Quintet Mode/VSOP A very good session!
  14. Et voila, Guy! Postcards CD Homepage
  15. Budd Johnson 'and the Four Brass Giants' (Riverside, mono) the Four Brass Giants being Clark Terry, Harry Edison, Nat Adderley and Ray Nance Did not remember this was part of 'A Cannonball Adderley Presentation' series but I did remember how good that session was!
  16. It made its initial appearance on volume 4 of the Dizzy Gillespie series on Masters of Jazz. It is listed as: DIZZY GILLESPIE-OSCAR PETTIFORD QUINTET DG, tp, Budd Johnson, tenor, George Wallington, p, Oscar Pettiford, b, Max Roach, dr. Broadcast Onyx Club, NYC, Jan. 1944 This was recorded from the radio by Bob Redcross. The liner notes to that vol. 4 include a photo of that quintet at the Onyx Club.
  17. Some of his best film scores were included in that 4-CD box (on Universal/EmArcy)
  18. Legrand is Grand! Too bad this great album had no sequel! (I'm not a big fan of the 'Dingo' soundtrack album)

    June Christy

Anything for June Christy and Bird... Wish there had been at least a surviving tape of a joint appearance of the two!

  21. Finishing a fine Havana cigar and sipping from a Spanish liquor 'Licor de Hierbas con Orujo'. No idea what it is exactly made of but it is mightily enjoyable
  22. Randy Weston 'Niles Littlebig' (Comet reissue) to be followed by: Randy Weston 'African Cookbook (Comet reissue)
  23. RDK, I'm not asking for anybody's ouster from here. I just would like Christern to be back in this place. I disagree with many of Christern's political statements but I always find them interesting! And I long for his non-political posts
  24. Yes, please! CA is obviously looking for a new home. Waste of time. This is his place!
  25. Wish there had been books similar to the Esther Bubley one for the other Jam Session gatherings! This was one of the best book on jazz photography to be published. As for a favorite Jam Session, Il love 3 and 4, the ones with Sweets, de Franco, Benny Carter and Willie Smith, Wardell Gray and Stan Getz, Basie... But 1 and 2 were something, too!
