  1. George Wallington and his Strings 'Variations' (Verve, orange label)
  2. I have already recommended these Barney Wilens on other KD threads (there are two volumes) Prime Dorham caught live at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris, with Duke Jordan on piano!
  3. Purchases from the Internet is mentioned 'en passant'. However there is an accompanying chart which details the influence of outfits like Amazon http://www.lemonde.fr/web/infog/0,47-0@2-3...1-881587,0.html Look under 'Sur les plate-forms de téléchargement Internet'. Some Le Monde readers have already voiced that they don't care about the disappearance of Fnac or Virgin since the way to go nowadays is Amazon!
  4. The influential daily newspaper Le Monde has an op-ed in its edition out today on the French record dealers plight (english translatation from Le Monde) Discs without dealer Related article: Disquaires: Avis de déprime
  5. Dan knows his Davis/Griffin tenor scene. Would also recommend this one:
  6. That Venuti vinyl is one hell of a beautiful album. Don't know what kept Venuti in such amazing shape in his old days but I wish I was handed the recipe!
  7. Shelly Manne and his Men, Vol. 5 'More Swinging Sounds' (Contemporary, mono) the very first Contemporary album I got back in 1957. Started my passion for Roy DuNann! Still plays incredibly vivid!
  8. Two of Joel Brodsky's covers for the Doors albums:
  9. From Reuters/Billboard:
  10. More expensive Moggie... Volume 3
  11. IS THIS THE ONE WITH MOBLEY?
  12. Old Pimps thread!
  13. Happy Birthday, Free For All This looks like a great year for you
  14. Ellington Small Group Sessions, discs 3 and 4
  15. That deus62 dude should have been named an honorary citizen of Paris
  16. porcy62, the weekend in Paris will go fast. If you want to visit museums, suggest you restrict yourself to a couple of the big ones. The Louvre is huge and you should try to spend several hours in one specific wing (the main gallery and adjacent rooms, if you want to have a close look at La Gioconda!). The Musée d'Orsay is a must see too. A huge lot of great paintings plus a wonderful setting. It closes on Mondays while the other museums close on Tuesdays. If you want to see the new architecture, try to see the recently opened Musée du Quai Branly with its striking architecture by Jean Nouvel. My usual recommendation for visitors to Paris in a hurry is an evening boat ride on the Seine river. It's magic! Since you'll be near the Sorbonne (in the Latin Quarter) and want to taste oysters, you might try Le Bar A Huitres at 33 rue Saint-Jacques, that's at the corner of the Boulevard Saint-Germain. If you want to visit vinyl record shops on Monday, you'll be out of luck since both Paris Jazz Corner and Crocojazz are closed that day. You can console yourself with a visit to the Joseph Gibert record shop on the Boulevard Saint-Michel (a stone throw from the Sorbonne!). It's open on Mondays. They have a great selection of new and secondhand CDs. PM me if you need more details!
  17. 'Introducing Linda Lawson' was originally released on the Chancellor label.
  18. George Russell 'New York Big Band' (Soul Note) Nice cover shot - credited to Max Gordon - of Russell and Max Gordon outside the VV!
  19. The set is now available again. Mine was shipped on Wednesday and was at my door yesterday. Fast! very fast!
  20. Why indeed are we waiting for a reissue. Toshiba reissued this as part of a Pacific Jazz albums package back on March 25, 1992. Old vinyl freaks still bless them for this!
  21. Oops, me bad. My earlier posts in this thread were about the Mosaic 1936-1940. Read this too fast. This being the Mosaic forum, I assumed it was about the Small Group set I Don't have that Sony 1927-1962 box!
  22. In France, musicians were playing out from around the mid-sixties. Early practicioners included Michel Portal, Barney Wilen, Jean-Louis Chautemps, Henri Texier, Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Jacques Thollot, Aldo Romano. Pianist François Tusques had a band around that time that included Bernard Vitet on trumpet, François Janneau and Portal on reeds, bass player Beb Guerin, etc... The arrival in France of Cecil Taylor, Marion Brown, Sonny Murray, the Art Ensemble, Anthony Braxton, Leo Smith, Jeanne Lee, Steve McCall and others helped as stimulants to the French players.
  23. Hans, I am pretty sure noise reduction has been applied. I was not expecting miracles and am just enjoying the music. I have heard various versions of these sessions and they all sounded pretty bad. The pre-WWII Columbia recordings have always been a problem (the glorious Count Basie sides are about the same!). Will report later when I have heard more from the set.
  24. Duke Ellington 1936-1940 Small Group Sessions, discs 1 and 2
  25. My set was shipped yesterday ... and was delivered today Starting to listen to it and am more than happy with the sound on the early sides. Have not had time to compare but they sound much better than the French CBS vinyl twofers that I tried to quench my ducal 30s thirst with until now!
