  1. First edition was titled 'Like Who' (same cover as the 'Like Basie' one shown earlier). This was UAL 4054 and copyrighted 1959. Second edition's front cover bore two huge letters P for Paul and Q for Quinichette and had no other album title. It was a white as the original cover was black. Catalogue number is UAL 4077. Same tracks list. 1960 copyright.
  2. The Beaujolais Nouveau season opened today. Had my first taste, a bottle of Domaine de la Tassée d'Argent. The bottle went down fast. Fruity beverage that should not leave me with a heavy head My wife who is from Bordeaux said it tasted like it had been medicined but she says that at every Beaujolais Nouveau tasting!
  3. Bought my vinyl copy from Fred Cohen's Jazz Record Center several years ago! It was a mono copy and it came with an unglued second pair of mono UA red labels. Plus a single-page UA releases list! Paul Quinichette ranked as President on my list of favorite players!
  4. Looks like Allan Songer beats us all! What he has been able to gather looks mighty impressive
  5. That's her all right! Story in Brazil's Globo (in Portuguese only): http://oglobo.globo.com/sp/mat/2006/11/15/286645820.asp She died on the eve of leaving for Paris for a fashion photos assignment! She started her modeling career at 13!
  6. Johnny Guarnieri 'Side By Side' (Camden, Japan)

    Tony Fruscella

Not that many people were interested in checking out Fruscella when these came out. The Japanese vinyl I have is an exact replica of the Atlantic original, even the black Atlantic labels are pretty close to the originals!
  8. OK! OK! Mine's bigger -_- I started getting those vinyls nearly half a century ago. Did not count but there must be something like over 300 of them!
  9. Geller's 'Gypsy' is strongly recommended. Great blowing date with Scott LaFaro and Elvin Jones! The only weakness on the date are the tunes from that Broadway show.

Superb cover photo by the great Hugh Bell I have the Japanese vinyl issue of this album. 1977 reissue. Bix would probably have sounded like Fru if he had been born in 1927!
  11. I had that experience with Alan Silva - also with the late Al Levitt - when they walked along the Seine river on their way to visit the bouquiniste stand of a common jazz fan/friend! Also with Jimmy Gourley whom I ran into several times when I worked not far from his home! Sam Fuller was also living at the time in the same neighborhood. I knew his films. He did not know me
  12. I have been a faithful member of the BN Church from the day I was converted when I purchased my first album (The Amazing Bud Powell, vol. 1) back in the late '50s. I have remained faithful through the Lion/Wolff BN/UA/Liberty era! I have turned away since I have all of these albums with the exception of that damn Urbie Green 10incher that has eluded the various searches I have made! Most treasured items are those early vinyls with the Lexington adresses. Beautiful sounding and looking albums that have withstood the test of time after multiple playings!
  13. George Russell seems to have been searching for the right formula in his post-1962 recordings but there is still plenty of worthy material in most of his output. One album that should be reinvestigated is the 'So What' date with the Living Time Orchestra that came out on BN!
  14. Al Cohn 'Play It Now' (Xanadu) with Barry Harris, Larry Ridley, Alan Dawson
  15. One photographer I really would like to see more images from: Esmond Edwards
  16. Chance encounters while on the road... Jim Hall taking in the sights with a friend in Ferrara, Italy. Harry Edison walking through the main city square in Toulouse, southern France. He was playing later that week in a local club. I went up to him and said hello. We finished the evening over drinks in a nearby café!
  17. Jack Montrose and J.R. Monterose
  18. Welcome to Paris! Here is hoping we will see a better edited (and reproduced) reissue of Carole Reiff's work!
  19. Jackie McLean 'Consequence' (BN Rainbow)
  20. Jimmy Smith 'The Singles' (BN/King)
  21. The well-documented (alas uncredited) liner notes to the Status CD 'Stan Kenton at Ukiah 1959' (one of the rare Kenton records with Scott LaFaro) state: 'Believe it or not, there were two drummers with identical names, and both played for Stan Kenton. Which was the better man is for the listener to decide.'
  22. Never could tell Jerry McKenzie, the drummer with Stan Kenton, from the other Jerry McKenzie, also a drummer who played with Kenton
  23. Sad to report the death of Sonny Cohn who was one of the most effective - and little known - musicians that contributed so much to the sound of the Count Basie band! From the Chicago Sun-Times today:
