It's funny but I was just thinking the same thing. I think it must be BMG but I seem to remember that some of the Fontana recordings have come out on Black Lion. What a great reissue programme that would be. All the original Fontana recordings complete with Marte Roling sleeves. Perhaps someone in Japan might consider reissuing them again. Fontana was in the hands of Polygram which is part of the Universal empire now! Universal is doing good with its jazz reissues programs so there might be hope!
  2. Ubu, don't ask me! I was hoping someone would test these and tell us if those downloads are worth it The Futterman and Simmons look tempting!
  3. Great albums at give away prices! Have these sessions in various versions! Wish I acquired them at those prices
  4. Marion Brown 'Juba-Lee' (Fontana)
  5. Ayler Records introduces download only new releases. These should be honey to Funny Rats ears! Ayler downloads

I have no problem with people listening to CDRs! I do that too! What I am shocked at is seeing a reputed record store selling CDRs so blatantly!
  7. BBS, this is the Gonsalves/White 1889 and here is the Steve White 1891.

I'm surprised/shocked ) that Downtown Music sells CDRs! Talk about illegal This is the Real Thing! Downtown used to be rather legitimate years ago
  9. The other 10CD box is Big Bands Story. This one.
  10. So that's where these French vinyls continue their life! Know you will enjoy them
  11. Who wrote that post #34? Somebody from Outer Space Talk about disappearing acts
  12. Most of this material has been released so far on grey market labels only!
  13. 'Jazz in Paris' and 'Trésors du Jazz' are two different series. The Trésors are boxes (usually 10CDs) that showcase the best of the jazz sides from a specific year. Volume 6 which is just out illustrates the year 1955. Selection of the material is taken care by veteran French jazz radio producer André Francis. Mastering is in the hands of veteran musicologist/composer Jean Schwarz. A very worthy enterprise taking advantage of the European 50-year copyright laws.
  14. Did some comparisons a couple of years ago (the Herbie Nichols and the Grant Green/Sonny Clark sets). I listened to the Lexington Herbie Nichols then a King Japan LP and finally the Mosaic vinyls. Could not detect any major differences (which was not the case with the badsounding BN twofer reissue) but the most natural piano I heard was on the King Japan reissue from 1983 (pre-digital?). As for the Grant Greens, the only originals I had were the Japanese Kings and those also had a very slight edge on the Mosaics. I love the Kings! They are still in their original shrinkwraps and look allnew 20 years after they were purchased! And they sound magnificient!
  15. From BBC News:
  16. A previous thread on the Nocturne box.
  17. NonF, just be patient with Amazon. I'm sure it will be there any day now! Their price looks good! Saw that 1955 box in one of the local store, along with another of the Trésors-type box. A new one but I just can't remember which one it was (vocal, piano, or ?!)
  18. The Trésors du Jazz 1955 is out by now: Trésors 1955 and cheaper at FNAC
  19. Jimmy Witherspoon 'At The Renaissance' (Hifijazz, stereo) with Gerry Mulligan and BenWebster
  20. 80?!? Good gracious! LD does age very graciously! Wishing him many, many returns!
  21. A pretty accurate list of ESP releases from Michael Fitzgerald's jazzdiscography site: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Labels/esp.htm
  22. I would not think of storing the vinyls away from the original boxes! I try to be as careful as possible when removing the LPs. Some of the boxes covers show very slight damage but that's the way I received them!
  23. I'm being proven wrong about this date! The Lord discography also lists a Camden vinyl issue of this 'Swinging In Sweden' album. Never saw that one! I have two acetates from this session that Tony Scott gave me but I don't have the material to play those
  24. I have this material in the three volumes of 'Bud Powell 1953 Broadcast Performances' that appeared on the Italian Base label back in vinyl days! The 'Salt Peanuts' there is the full length version. The Roy Haynes solo is a stunner indeed! The Claude Schlouch discography of Bud Powell states it's Clyde Lombardi on bass on that date, not Charles Mingus as indicated on various issues (including the Base!). Claude also lists that session as having been recorded on March 21 (not 23)!
  25. Lennie Niehaus 'Zounds' (Contemporary, mono original)
