  1. I remember buying a lot of those Kings at Mole Jazz whenever I traveled to London. They seemed to have plenty of those at the time! And didn't BN England (or whoever was distributing the label) issued those Rainbows in Made in England replica LPs? I must have a couple of those somewhere!
  2. miles davis vol 1 (lexington both sides, nm) Archival backup for my 10" copy. that's not fair Enjoying the shine on both sides of my BN1501 Lex. copy while listening to: Lee Morgan 'Infinity' (BN, rainbow, original release)
  3. Those Transition sessions are just as good as the genuine BN from the era!
  4. Nothing wrong with the rainbow cover or audio. I was glad to see them when they were released. They brought a lot of unisssued gems from the BN vaults. Bill Burks, the art director for the series, had a taste of his own which I did not really go for but at least the covers did have a design of their own which made them instantly recognizable. If I remember well, the King vinyls came shortly after. These got my seal of approval - and still have - as far as audio was concerned.
  5. Palance and Bardot in Godard's 'Le Mépris' (Contempt)
  6. One of my favorites, brownie. I hope that BN will get around to putting it on CD so that's available for all. A smoking session that one! What a shame it's not been reissued (apart from the Mosaic Fuller).
  7. One of the few films (besides the Robert Aldrich ones) where his talent was fully displayed. Palance and Godard (plus Fritz Lang) made a surprisingly working collaboration!
  8. Well I've read most of the books on Bird. But not the Brian Priestley. Will get to this later. I have the 'To Bird With Love' item. Great conversation piece and I am glad to have it but it's a photos book. And too many of these photos were second (even third or whatever) hand copies that would have needed better reprinting.
  9. Curtis Fuller 'Two Bones' (BN/King Japan) with Slide Hampton, Sonny Clark, George Tucker, Al Harewood.
  10. Claude Schlouch's discography of Hank Mobley lists this as a March 15, 1956 appearance on the Steve Allen show. I have yet to listen to this!
  11. Some of the best interpretations of those sonatas are to be found on the recently released anthology by the late French pianist Yves Nat who died in August 1956. The budget-priced 15CD set has some of the most natural piano playing ever! Yves Nat may be a little forgotten by now but his interpretations throughout the set are amazingly beautiful.
  12. Up! The memoirs of Nica de Koenigswarter will be published in France next week. Les Musiciens de Jazz et Leurs Trois Voeux The book includes some 100 photos from Nica's private collection. The book is being published for the first time in France after having been turned down by US book companies. Some of the photos are visible in this week's issue of 'Le Nouvel Observateur'. The title translates 'The Jazz Musicians and their Three Wishes'. Miles Davis' wish - according to the book - was 'to be white'!
  13. Still waiting for a really good book on Charlie Parker
  14. If it was just for me, I would avoid all these stadiums. Much better sites to see in all those cities Only one day in Paris?
  15. Roosevelt Wardell Trio 'The Revelation' (Riverside, stereo) with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. From the 'Cannonball Adderley Presents' series. Notes by Chris Albertson.
  16. A superb reissue of Nathan Davis rare album 'Peace Treaty' has just been reissued on 180-gram vinyl in France. A perfectly legal reissue which used the original stereo track from the session. The original was issued in mono sound back in 1965. The sound is better than on the original! Not to speak of the of the hard to get CD reissue from 1990 on the French EPM label. The vinyl is available from de Bastards! Also from Paris Jazz Corner!
  17. Several years ago, there was an ad in a newspaper from somebody who was selling his jazz vinyls. Went to his place. There were dozens of pretty interesting albums. Only problem was that the top spines were all ruined. The wouldbe seller said his cat used them to trim his nails! Only bought a couple of teninchers that had been spared the treatment!
  18. I've got a Mosaic gift coupon. It will find good use with this ducal set
  19. Buck Clayton Columbia Sessions, disc 3
  20. Membran has released this 20CD box: The box has a 'comprehensive selection of piano jazz' (380 tracks plus a 120-page booklet) also with 'previously unreleased recordings by Monty Alexander, Kenny Barron, Horace Silver, Les McCann and Chick Corea'. Price seems right, as usual for Membran sets.
  21. That one came out during the '60s on the Musidisc label in France. Musidisc was distributing the Savoy catalogue at the time.
  22. Lester Bowie 'Rope-A-Dope' (Muse)
  23. Johnny Griffin is also a featured player in the Niels Lan Doky film 'Between a Smile and a Tear'. Have not seen the film but the sountrack has just been released here on the Blue Saphir label. This was filmed in July 2004 at Copenhagen's Café Montmartre.
  24. Garth, I was 17 too when Tony Scott showed up in Paris in 1957. I had written an article about him in Jazz Hot that year. The article is mentioned in the Press Catalogue section of that wonderful site! Glad to see we have kept the same faith
  25. Yes, it's the Urania album and it's Kenny Kersey playing organ on some tracks, piano on the others. I have the FreshSound reissue. The Hawk is in splendid form on that session. His ballad playing (on 'I'll Never Be The Same' and 'What's New' in particular) is really topnotch!
