  1. Altman was a one-of-a-kind film director. A man of talent but I'm not sure his films will outlive the test of time! My preferred film from him was 'Thieves Like Us'.
  2. Bob Brookmeyer Select, disc 3
  3. Missing are all the early sets. The ones I still prefer!
  4. The Natasha Miles is bootleg. The Dragon releases are very legal. Beautiful set. Recorded by the Swedish Radio. The extra material comes from the concert that had Sonny Stitt on sax. No added material from the concert with Trane.
  5. Dewey Redman 'Look For The Black Star' (Fontana)
  6. Clifford Jordan 'In The World' (Strata-East)
  7. Very useful tool for non-english/american posters that SpellChecker. I switched from Internet Explorer to Firefox2 several weeks ago and am delighted with the improvement.
  8. Reggie Johnson's wishes are also in the book (his third one being to play with Miles'). There's a photo of him playing bass. I remember Reggie as the young man who played impressively with the Marin Brown trio (Rashied Ali was the drummer) when Marion played a concert in Newark back in the fall of 1965! PM me if you need help with Amazon.fr!
  9. I'm not buying vinyls anymore. But when I was buying (and I bought plenty) I never went thru eBay. I wanted to have a look at the stuff I was putting hard-earned money on to be sure the price was right! Even then I bought several LPs that looked quasi pristine and turned out to have hidden problems (warp, tiny scratches...)
  10. Can't say I was ever impressed by the sound of the Atlantic releases, mono or stereo. The imaging on many of their stereo albums (Freddie Hubbard, Roland Kirk among others) seemed overdone and the audio range sounded as it had been tempered with! Atlantic did much better with their cover designs (specially when Lee Friedlander was taking care of most of those!). As for audio, I'ld rather listen to the sound that Roy DuNann achieved at Contemporary!
  11. Tal Farlow Concert Jazz Band, disc 3
  12. Valerie, easiest way to get the book is to order thru Amazon.fr: http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/2283020387...2490924-9864161 They don't have the book yet but it should be available after November 23, the official publication date. Will be ready to help if you cannot get it thru Amazon.fr or any other outfit! For your information, here are Walter Bishop's three wishes (rough translation): 1- Have my mind at ease 2- Contribute to jazz 3- Help others His answers come after Bobby Timmons' and before Paul Chambers'
  13. Take it you mean Riverside 'Sound of Sonny'?!?
  14. Elvin Jones 'Dear John C' (Impulse, orange label, mono)
  15. The book will be out later this week. Managed to get an early copy. Can understand better why the US publishers shied away from releasing it. It's not Nica's memoirs. There is a nine-page foreword from Nadine de Koenigswarter, Nica's granddaughter. The rest are contributions by 300 musicans (from Louis Armstrong to Sun Ra) on their three wishes! Plus tons of Polaroid shots taken by the Baroness of the musicians. The vast majority making their first appearances in the book. This includes candid photos of Monk, Coltrane, Miles, Sonny Clark, Mobley, Mingus, Hawkins, Rollins and many others. Not general public stuff but fascinating reading for the jazz fan. Very recommended book even for non-French readers!
  16. Do you have the 1953(?) Birdland broadcast w/Bird, Dizzy, Bud, Forgetwhoonbass, & "Sgt. Roy Haynes"? That's another one... Don't have it--I've got a ton of live Bird, but not that date. What's it on? (I've got a bit of Bird w/Bud at Birdland on one of the ESP 1953 discs, but that's w/Art Taylor on drums, along w/Candido--just two cuts.) Did that second Ember live-Bird set ever come out? Probably would've covered the date you're talking about... Jim obviously refers to the Birdland March 31, 1951 broadcast with Bird, Diz, Bud, Potter and Sgt. Haynes! Birdland March 31, 1951 Lofi. Himusic!
  17. Illinois Jacquet 'Desert Winds' (Argo/Cadet)
  18. 'Smokestack' will be the first on the list!
  19. No Laird. Chuck Israels!
  20. Cal Massey 'Blues for Coltrane' (Candid)
  21. Serge Leroy who gets is named as director for the video went on to become a full fledged motion picture director with a number of successful films. He died several years ago. I met him when he was a student at the French film school IDHEC and we both attended film showings at the Paris Cinematheque in the late fifties. He was a film and jazz fan at the time. Had no idea he had made this Mingus film!
  22. The rust is what makes this set disctinctive! A rustfree box would be a first!
  23. Stan Kenton 'Live at the Las Vegas Tropicana' should not disappoint either!
  24. Miles Davis movie projects are shaping up! From The New York Times today:
