The New York Times has a story on the auction in its edition today.
-
The two New Jazz albums by Ken McIntyre 'Looking Ahead' and 'Stone Blues are definitely 'out' and should be 'in' the list!

Looks like some tenor players have problems with their trumpet-playing brothers! Wayne and Alan Shorter. Albert and Don Ayler. -
Is there a website for Chronological Classics?
brownie replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
You mean you don't get paid? If true, hope you have at least a full set of Classics releases -
You mean 'Locomotion'? That one: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...1986037-1113707 For Solal completists only. It's not really a soundtrack from a film. This was part of a series of music to be used to accompany TV features! Solal met the challenge but the result is an oddity in his discography!
-
Now: - Sonny Stitt 'Now' (Impulse) next: - Jimmy Lyons 'Wee Sneezawee' (Black Saint)

The story on the auction has just turned up on AP.

Agustin, dug up a number of Jazz Magazine issues gathering dust in a corner. Here are those I found: - issue 250 (review of a concert by Tete and Martial Solal), - issue 321 (lengthy interview made in Barcelona), - issue 324 (short review of a solo concert in Marseille) I do not have the earlier ones. I have quite a number of very early Jazz Magazine issues from the time I was writing for them. Stopped buying the magazine for a time in the mid sixties (your bad luck in this case) when I went writing for Jazz Hot. You'll get what I could find in the next few days...

There's this auction of rare jazz items to be held at New York's Lincoln Center next February 20. Instruments that belonged to Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane and Gerry Mulligan are being put on the auction block by Guernsey's: http://www.guernseys.com/Auctions/Jazz/About.html Could not find a newsstory on this but AP moved several photos to illustrate the auction including that one: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor.../nyr10601190210 The caption of which mentions 'an unreleased tape of a 1951 performance by Parker' among the rare items being offered!

Nutty! And fun!

Link for the soundtrack of 'Repulsion': http://www.dougpayne.com/repulsio.htm Excellent film, excellent music. Further discussion on this should go into a British movie sountrack thread

Listened to the double vinyl of the concert this morning. Real trouble starts with 'Walkin''. Don't know the source of the tape but I am pretty sure it originates from a pickup from a pre-FM radio broadcast. The noise sounds so much like what I was hearing over the radio at the time the concert was held! It's a bother but I don't mind it THAT much. Just glad to have a chance to hear the concert music, warts and all...

Jaffa, any idea if Classics is going to do an updated encore of the wonderful catalogue that listed all of their first 500 releases? That catalogue went up to nr. 1024 and was released several years ago.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
brownie replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Dizzy Reece Mosaic Select -
MGA, have not listened to it. Not a big fan of Delon or Henri Clement. Even Schifrin does not do that much to me! I'll pass this one... Unless someone does a great convincing act

Ubu, 'Shoah' is the accepted and quasi official term in current French for The Holocaust.
-
A new runway is being constructed at New York JFK airport to accomodate the new Airbus! From a Newsday story today:
-
'Shoah' is the most distressing film I have ever seen. If there is one film to be seen on the Holocaust, this is the one! It's also being shown on French TV this week.
-
Yes I mistakenly noted that one down when I stumbled on the initial batch of Sonet reissues. Can't remember why
-
Braff and Dickenson plus some great rhythm section, Dick Katz and Jimmy Rowles, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bill Crow and Connie Kay. It took me a long time to really appreciate Braff. Love his playing now!
-
A double welcome to the club then
-
I discovered that Kessel/Mitchell Sonet session and loved it. I'm a big fan of Braff. This was also a very good date. The Baker I like, but there's better around. Haven't heard the Bop session in years. Wasn't very impressed with it when it came out. Someone tell me I need to relisten to it!
-
That I can't deny! Probably not enough '54 material around, so they're taking a second go before proceeding to the '55 stuff? Beg to disagree, your Royal Highness! I think Fresh Sounds has acquired the rights to those Jazztones. I hope they also reissue that superb Lionel Hampton session on Jazztone (with Lucky Thompson, Jimmy Cleveland, Oscar Dennard, Oscar Pettiford) and make sense of that session which has never been released complete.
-
The list of musicians who took part in the first session under his name ('Taylor's Wailers' Prestige 7117) is pretty impressive! Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean, Charlie Rouse, Ray Bryant and Wendell Marshall. Thelonious Monk was also present at the recording session and supplied the arrangements for the two compositions of his that were performed for the date, 'Well You Needn't' and 'Off Minor'.

Up... after almost two years. Discovered this soundtrack album http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...1986037-1113707 The sadly missed Pepper Adams is featured in the soundtrack of the forgettable 1976 film 'Nous Irons Tous au Paradis'. He played as part of a group called 'the Sax Brothers'. The other featured soloist was Tony Coe. Also involved in the band that performed the easy-listening music by Vladimir Cosma were pianist Maurice Vander and drummer Sam Woodyard. Coe, Vander and Woodyard also took part in the Vladimir Cosma music for the other film 'Un Elephant Ca Trompe Enormement. The soundtracks are part of a series produced by Sony France.
