  1. Do these qualify? I still remember the thrill of hearing John Coltrane's debut album - or at least the first one to appear under his name - 'Coltrane' (Prestige 7105) back in the late fifties. That came out shortly before BN's 'Blue Train'. Also Albert Ayler's first one on ESP: 'Spiritual Unity' which I heard before catching up on his earlier albums on BirdNorte and Debut; Mindblowers, both!
  2. From AP:
  3. I have the mono Elektra cover, same as stereo without the sticker. It looks even better B-)
  4. Did not check (cause I'm not home) but I know the boxes left no Prez stones from that era unturned!
  5. Not a Mosaic but have enjoyed these past few days discs 1 thru 12 of the 24CD RCA Duke Ellington Centennial Edition. A Mosaic class reissue! Been waiting for years for Columbia to go ahead on a similar box with their pre-1952 Ellington sessions! If Columbia won't work on this, let's have Mosaic do it! Next on the listening range will be discs 13 to 24 of the RCA box.
  6. Always thought that yellow was the appropriate colour for KKK dresswear
  7. All of this was on the 16CD issues (and also on the 22LP Prez Box). Wonderful music!
  8. I still have the copy of the Yale University concert LP. Bought it from Milford Graves when it was released Cover was a handpainted job!
  9. The original issue of this Bill Potts album was a limited edition UA LP with a sketch on its cover. The gatefold had several pages of text and photos on the sessions. Away from home for the time being and can only describe from memory. But the sound on the original issue was excellent!
  10. I am away from home and NOT spinning any vinyl. And I miss THAT sound!
  11. George Russell chose Paul Bley and Bill Evans for duo piano chores for his 'Jazz In The Space Age' sessions for Decca. An outstanding and too often overlooked album!

    Jean-Michel Pilc

Jean-Michel Pilc is a very impressive French pianist with a brilliant technique in the Martial Solal tradition and a very individual style. He spends most of his time in the United States now. My only problem with Pilc is that he leaves the emotions behind the ideas and technique. But definitely worth checking!
  13. Currently attending the Visa Pour l'Image photojournalism show in Perpignan, southern France. http://www.visapourlimage.com/anglais/expos3.php3 Lot of great names of photojournalism attending this annual gathering. Some outstanding shows to be seen: From Willy Ronis and David Douglas Duncan - two veterans attending the show - to Ami Vitale of Getty Images ' assignment in Cachemire, AP Jerusalem's retrospective on the Second Intifada and Christopher Morris of the VII photo agency who is presenting a stunning exhibition entitled 'The New Republic: one Nation under God' a disturbing assemblage of photos on the sidelines of the coverage he does for Time Magazine when he follows President Bush'. Outstanding images!
  14. Drinking a little red wine a day also keeps the ailments away. I'm sticking to red wine
  15. Catchng up on this Rene Urtreger thread! Just would like to add a recommendation for the latest Urgreter opus: http://www.sketch-studio.com/sketch-jazz/08onirica.html A magnificient solo album...
  16. Will wait for the details. But it's superb news to be able to expect new Ellington-Blanton material!
  17. Currently on the road on business. I have brought several CDs I have not played in a long time but the CD box has mainly been filled with the 24 discs of the RCA Duke Ellington Centennial Edition going at full blast!
  18. The Art Hodes set (Mosaic 114) does not mention digital transfers. The Herbie Nichols set (Mosaic 118) mentions the digital transfers. But my ears tell me the transfers are excellent. I have a Lexington adress copy of the BN original LP (near mint copy) and the Mosaic sounds a shade better! No time now to check other vinyl sets.
  19. The Tal Farlow Mosaic set is out. Saw copies in Paris today.
  20. Frank Butler 'Wheelin' And Dealin'' (Xanadu) with Teddy Edwards, Joe Farrell, Dolo Coker and Monty Budwig!
  21. THE Essential jazz musician! Happy Birthday to Bird. I celebrate him every day!

    Funny Rat

From Alan Lankin's Jazzmatazz Upcoming Jazz releases list: I'll look forward for this new one from Patty Waters. Her two ESP albums were real out of the ordinary! And since Burton Greene is just one step away from Ms. Waters, currently listening and enjoy Greene's Columbia LP 'Presenting Burton Greene' (with Byard Lancaster, Steve Tintweiss and Shelly Rusten) which I had not spinned in a long, long time. Doubt that Sony will ever reissue that one! Hope somebody else will. Water maybe??? What on earth was going on at Columbia when they recorded this (and the Sonny Murray album they never released)? The Greene album was produced by one John Hammond! Was Columbia trying to get hip and follow ESP's path? In any case, 35 years after it came out, the Greene music still sounds fresh!
  23. Check also the Atlantic album 'Bags and Flutes', Milt Jackson with Bobby Jaspar and Frank Wess. It's available on Collectables nowadays.
  24. Clint Eastwood played Misty for him!
