  1. Also 'Moody And The Brass Figures' on Milestone. Tom McIntosh arranged and conducted the orchestral sections on that record. Brass on the session were Joe Newman, Jimmy Owens, Snooky Young, Jimmy Cleveland and Don Butterfield. An old favorite album.
  2. Today is the 12th stage. The 197-kilometer ride includes the ride up the Col d'Aspin and the ride up to the finish line at La Mongie. Tomorrow will be the second pyrenean mountain stage. Then from the 15th to the 18th stage (July 20 to July 23) there will be the Alps stages. Final stage to Paris is Sunday July 25. If you can watch the Tour live on TV, they will hit the climb up to Col d'Aspin within the next hour. Should be a great show!
  3. Some of the Monk quartet Birdland dates from February 1963 have appeared on one of the Boris Rose LP label (Alto). Sides from the February 9, 16 and 23 evenings. From the February 16, three tracks (Bright Mississipi, Epistrophy, Sweet And Lovely) were on Alto AL725. Two more tunes (Four In One, Epistrophy II) are still unissued. 'Evidence' from February 23 is also on that Alto release. All are performed by the regular Monk quartet with Charlie Rouse.

    Funny Rat

Is this Funny Rat? Or am I reading the Scotch thread??
  6. Lemond in Le Monde today. With French champion Thomas Voeckler still in the lead after the 11th stage, Armstrong is expected to strike in the next two stages through the Pyrenees mountains.
  7. Another excellent trio date by Pieranunzi is the Japanese AlfaJazz 'The Chant of Time' release (with Marc Johnson). And highly recommended also is the wonderful Fellini/jazz album on CamJazz (with Kenny Wheeler, Chris Potter, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian) playing themes (mostly by Nino Rota) from Fellini films, all arranged by Pieranunzi.

I have two more Impulses that don't seem to have been reissued: 'Hues', a 1975 release with tracks from various 1971/1973 concerts, 'Sizzle', recorded in 1975 with Ted Dunbar, Dave Holland, Barry Altschul and Warren Smith. Good ones but I have not played them for quite some time!
  9. It did not get much praise either when it was originally released in the mid-sixties. Bought the vinyl then and have enjoyed this one since.

Great cover photo by Fred Seligo!
  11. I'm with you too, Westbed. The Night of the Cookers really cooks. from the 'Pensativa' opening tune on. I stayed away from this thread so far because that ground had already been trampled in a previous discussion on the old BNBB which amounted to about the same thing with a lot of negative thinking and very few dissenters. I have enjoyed the blowing on that club date even if I did not like the sound. I have the vinyls and the sound was not much. Hope the RVGs improve on it. But Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard are not in to settle scores but to check how far their improvising imagination could take them! And both win! Plus Spaulding is cooking right along!

  13. The 1988 copy of the Pacific Jazz/Capitol CD 'Jazz Guitar' by the Jim Hall Trio has the following note: 'All selections are monaural. #3 originally issued on Pacific JazzJWC 507. #11 originally issued on JWC 506. All other titles originally issued on PJ1227. Discographical note: Pacific Jazz PJ 1227 also included 'This Is Always' but the master tape for that selection has been lost. Further the first pressings of PJ1227 included longer versions of #1, 2, 5, 6, 9 and 10. The portions of these performances that were edited out cannot be found'. Track list: 1 Stompin' at the Savoy 4:01 2 Things ain't what they used to be 4:41 3 Things ain't what they used to be (alternate track) 5:44 4 Thanks for the memory 5:12 5 Tangerine 3:53 6Stella by starlight 3:07 7 9:20 special 5:41 8 Deep in a dream 4:32 9 Look for the silver lining 3:11 10 Seven come eleven 3:50 11 Too close for comfort4:23
  14. I have avoided those Russian (weren't they Soviet?) LPs like the plague. Those I have seen looked like they were made out of thin paper and bad vinyl. Have I been wrong? I'm pretty sure that the LP you have is a copy (legal?) of the Verve album 'The Genius of Coleman Hawkins'. I have seen a couple of these LPs around here.
  15. Tooter, the 'Milano Blues' on that Roach/Levey album indeed sounds like what you describe. The album was briefly discussed recently: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...55&hl=max+roach As mentioned, Max Roach and Stan Levey never play together. And it's Levey playing on 'Milano Blues'.
  16. Mike, I love the Roussillon province. Always make detours there when I travel to Perpignan every September for the Visa Pour l'Image photo show. Not familiar with Cerdana but now that you mention I will certainly take a look at it when my wife and I will holiday in Catalunya later this year. It seems to be close to Gerona which is beautiful. Will also have to check that Deodat de Severac...
  17. Deus, shouldn't the colour be red? We're talking about the kid from Red Bank The header looks fine to me...
  18. December 11, 1956 - Sonny Speaks - was the second session of the 'Just Friends' PJ album by Bill Perkins with Art Pepper (first session had Richie Kamuca sted of Pepper). Don't know about the September 1956 session with Nick Fatool.
  19. Mike, the new cheaper boxes have been out in the Paris stores since the start of the month. They look cheaper. Did not check the price but doubt they have been downpriced...
  20. I have 'Drummin' The Blues' with its 5m02s version of 'Milano Blues' and could check with a desription of the track from the Bob Cooper album which I don't have... but I have never been able to read (or comprehend) a musical chart
  21. Not fried - and certainly not KFC-approved - but finger-licking good: http://www.shaboomskitchen.com/archives/fo...sechickvin.html Tasted and enjoyed at Paul Bocuse restaurant years ago...
  22. Since Gato had a close relation to the city whose sky I live under, I searched for a trace of a recording of this tune by him and could not trace any. I did not really recognize his style but searched for the sake of identifying at least one of the BFT tracks. Oh the frustration
  23. Sal Nistico 'Heavyweights'. Missing from that one is 'Just Friends' from the 'Heavyweights' original album.
  24. Let's all make that wish. I spent a couple of weeks in Lebanon during the 1982 war but Baalbeck which was Syrian army territory then was a no access area. Very frustrating. Always dreamed of going there and take a good, long look at that historical site!
  25. Marcus, if the help you need from Europe involves just shipping some of the discs, ypu can count on me. E-mailing you to join the crowd for BFT 15.
