  1. Hope you'ré having à great birthday!
  2. The Chet Baker release is among Chet's best! He and his musicians were in top form the night they were recorded.
  3. How sad.... What a nice man and à superb entertainer he was. Spent à great evening listening to him when he was at NY's Iridium club back in 2004. He had amusing reminiscences of playing in Paris decades earlier. He introduced me to the great Barbara Lea who was at the club. He will be missed! His vocal on Miles Davis 'Blue Christmas' is a minor masterpiece!
  4. Indeed... Photo by Nica. It is on page 78 in thé original edition in France (from Buchet & Chastel's (Les Musiciens de Jazz et leurs Trois Voeux) of her book. The only thing missing is the sound...

Great... now I know where I can file that 'Tracks in the Sand' CD. Just trying to remember where I placed it last time I had it in hand....
  6. He brought so much and opened wide horizons... He was a good friend and will be missed. My thoughts go to Andrew Cyrille, his faithful accompanist!
  7. Did not intend to get that volume 6 but the price was unbeatable when I saw à copy today. Will give it a full listen over the weekend. One thing that really surprised me was the Jean-Pierre Leloir photo on page 26 of the accompanying booklet. It shows Miles with visitors backstage at the Olympia. Next to Miles is none other than Mezz Mezzrow! And it's Jan Johansson on the left. Jan was playing with the Stan Getz quartet that evening. Leloir was all over the scene that evening, as usual. ..
  8. Yes, part of the audience reacted negatively to Coltrrane's solos.
  9. Being raised in thé middle of the 20th Century, the members of the BN family I grew up with were named Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Lee Morgan', Sonny Clark, Doug Watkins, Kenny Burrell, Jackie McLean, Curtis Fuller and so many others...
  10. 9/10 Got à wrong answer to the King saxophone question...
  11. I bought my vinyl copy of vol. 3 when it came out in the Summer of 1984 when I was in LA for the Olympic Games. The Rhino record store had these great King vinyls.that came out then from Japan. Wish I still have them (I mean the vinyls and my ears! ).
  12. Excellent book on a great label with lots of well documented pages. Note: had not noticed the Tjader/McFarland goof (a rather minor one except for Tjader followers ☺)
  13. French violonist Didier Lockwood died after a heart attack in Paris yesterday. He was 62.
  14. Niko, Good of you to mention that 'Welcome Back' album, à very pleasant one! Been à fan of The Real John Williams since he was playing with Stan Getz more than 60 years ago. Got the CD when it came out and enjoyed it ever since. I enjoy some of the works from the other John Williams but I really groove on whatever I can get from The Real One.
  15. The sound quality on the Steve Allen show is plain awful. Macero shows up for brief solos on the two tunes. Buying the CD for Mobley is a pure waste of money. Buying it for Monk is worth à reasonable price. Sound is better - not excellent - on the other tunes.
