So - Bootsie Barnes (6) and Sam Lazar (1) are the only identified tracks. The artists have something in common that would reveal the theme, even in the absence of any more track ID's. (Remember the last track is not part of the theme.)

COVID 19 Poll For the New Year
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yeah we could do bar-b-que take out and eat outdoors. Again, folks, this is a "we'd like to go out to dinner with you guys sometime" situation. Nothing was ever set or agreed to and I think they still don't appreciate how far apart we are, even if they drove to Hallendale Beach directly from Plant City when they were here for an hour in the summer. So who knows when this gets arranged. We could all be vaccinated by then. -
COVID 19 Poll For the New Year
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, we aren't saying we won't take any risk ... we just don't want to take the risk of any sort of dinner at a retail establishment. We are not opposed to hosting them, but when that might even happen is completely unknown given the distance they'd travel. We met them in person last summer, during the pandemic, when they stopped by on their way back to south Florida from Tampa. We just maintained social distance. -
Does anyone have contact with Zorn or anyone else known to have worked with BJP? I am wondering about other people who might hear my clip of who we think is probably BJP speaking, to verify.

COVID 19 Poll For the New Year
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yeah, until my ill-fated employment with a 1000+ behemoth company that's idea of growth was buying up agencies and then losing at least 50% of the book of business due to an inability to service the clients, I had always worked for relatively tiny businesses. And I don't think of any one on linkedin as remotely a "friend". But anyone working in corporate world or who rely on networking for sales/lead generation or the like is going to "know" a helluva lot more people than I do. -
COVID 19 Poll For the New Year

My wife and I now work for the same couple and they want to get together for dinner and the problem is we are not interested in going out anywhere and lingering for 60 or 90 minutes. We might consider hosting them for dinner and maybe sharing the table (as opposed to TV trays and social distancing in the living room. I am not sure if he gets our concern. He did get it last month maybe he figured he's got absolute immunity. But I don't think she had it. Maybe if they both did we'd share a table with them, just not in a public setting. Since we live 3 + hours apart its all theoretical unless they commit to driving up here from south Florida. -
"Best Historical Releases 2020"
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Which I definitely prefer to the later one selected, not least due to that Gran Senor from Catalonia. -
15 discrete bidders (I mean 42 bids by 15 individuals). If you're going to issue it, pretty cheap I would think. I just wish someone put the music up like this when there a Rose LP which featured Johnny Griffin and the Three Sounds. Chewy saw it but didn't tell us about it until after the fact. I'd have been happy to snatch that and clean it up, if not bid a decent amount to land it (that would be way less than $1358).

COVID 19 Poll For the New Year

I can't imagine saying I "know" even 500 people. But I've never been that social and I really don't get out much at all. I was asking in the sense of FB friends not counting ... -
"Best Historical Releases 2020"

I wonder if this kind of attention was paid to the first box. I'd hope that it was. I still need to pick this up especially for the unissued Teddy Edwards. (Actually I saw that split LP on the What Are You Listening to thread, Sonny live on one side and Teddy Edwards with Joe Castro on the other, and thought that's the perfect way to put this music together - the original Atlantic session, the unissued takes and that half a record. Ought to fit a CDR.) -
COVID 19 Poll For the New Year

Sorry to hear this Guy. I wonder, when it's over, how many of us will know (as in real-life know) someone who was lost to Covid 19. Will it be a majority? 40% of the population? 25%? -
It was gonna get them in on the riches Ralph Sharon received for his recording of the same genre. Why Berry Gordy didn't put it on Workshop Jazz, I'll never know.

Not to stretch this out too long but keeping up with Mike's ongoing evaluation, I sent him a clip of the group talking in between tunes and he identifies someone saying "rippin' my shit" as sounding a great deal like BJP. I sent it back to him, isolated and boosted, and since he is in touch with Patton's widow Thelma, who better to ID her husband? So hopefully we can be even more definitive here soon. This is pretty thrilling but I'd like to get the last bit of doubt out before I go all in.

Justin are you aware of the Le Quartet recording on Black & Blue? That was done with Percy France but as a featured guest. He plays on about 1/2 of the cuts and the rest are the trio. If you do vinyl used copies are around, if you are CD only I'd recommend CD Japan, it came out for the very first time on CD last August. Very decent sound transfer.
-
That's all there is, and That's All is the tune. Actually, I know that's all there is because ... the source is me. I put it up on youtube. Your collector took it from there, and added his own imaginary information - he's guessing/assuming its NYC and I actually gave a more specific time frame - early 80s. That's all (ha ha) I'm at liberty to say.
-
Tom, Where did you find this? Is there anything else from this?
-
Mike's first recording also included all of those different formats back in 2013 ... but back to the subject: MR FLANIGIN SAYS IT IS BJP!!! "I can hear his voice, doing his grunt/singing at times when he’s playing his solo. He did this all the time when I was with him practicing in his house. I know that voice." He also says that folks called him John Patton around him, sounds like "Big John" was more for record covers and such. So that's pretty solid evidence for me. (Full disclosure, Mike also mentioned that Patton sounds like he's struggling a bit with his right hand, which had been injured changing a tire, but according to that piece on Andy Bleaden's blog that took place at least a couple of years after this gig. Could the friend have it wrong? Nevertheless the grunt/singing he IDs makes Mike's judgement solid to me.

Thank you Niko. That is a fantastic portrait of BJP, that's for sure. I didn't see anything about Percy but I do know he would have been one of the neighborhood musicians who was around. So not specifically mentioning him doesn't mean they didn't know each other. I've heard from Soul Stream aka Mike Flanigin and sent him my questions along with a sample. I'll post what he says and in the meantime I should mention that Mike had a new CD out last summer: http://www.mikeflanigin.com/store/west-texas-blues-cd There are samples at Amazon, I'm getting a copy for sure.

woh, thank you Justin. Auditioning and this does not sound unlike what I have with Percy. Another clue!
-
1954-59 if Discogs bio sketch is correct.
-
Yeah, that would put him on the scene or at least in the metropolitan area. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if he and Percy knew each other in the 60s if both were in NYC or nearby, and Percy often gigging with organists. I just wish I knew what he'd sound like on piano. So darn intriguing. I found Soul Stream's website hopefully he responds and can also shed light on the possibility.
-
So I attained a new Percy France recording, October 1988 at Flamingo Lounge in Brooklyn. Percy announces musicians at the end of set 1 ... and its "John Patton" on piano, and Wes Anderson on drums. And I am thinking, I'll never know who these two guys are, any google hit will be for Big John, and for Wes Anderson the saxophonist. Now it's been pointed out that maybe it actually could be Big John on piano? My thought is "no" because Percy doesn't introduce him as such and there's no special crowd reaction either. Then again the crowd is not too excited in general. Does anyone know definitively where Big John would have been in 1988? (Where is Soul Stream aka Mike Flanigan when you need him?) Maybe someone knows of a John Patton pianist in the late 80s on the NYC scene? I gotta admit, the thought that this maybe could be Big John on piano with Percy France is pretty exciting. edit to add: there's also the intriguing possibility that Leonard Gaskin brought his Walkman to record this gig, specifically because it was BJP?

But if the Dodgers won they take a 3-1 lead. You know the odds are strongly in their favor, historically. I always felt that Reggie was the turning point, and the way he lined up his leg with the throw it was brutally obvious, above and beyond the fact that he is supposed to abandon the baseline when he's out. One of those to keep debating I guess. -

It was, because I actually liked them! Red Sox were my AL team and Dodgers were my NL team. I think because I had to see the Yankees lose and that never happened. I remember the SI ... photo caption or was it on the cover? Anyway it was after Reggie stuck his hip out on the double play ball, clear as day, the cheater, and the photo or cover said "Lopes Mopes" or maybe "Lopes Mopes while ... " Serious question for all the baseball fans. With replay review, does Reggie get away with it? And relatedly, do the Dodgers win that game and have a much better chance of winning it all with a what, 3-1 lead at that point? RIP Tommy Lasorda. I bet he's chowing down on some real good pasta.
