Tom, Where did you find this? Is there anything else from this?
-
Mike's first recording also included all of those different formats back in 2013 ... but back to the subject: MR FLANIGIN SAYS IT IS BJP!!! "I can hear his voice, doing his grunt/singing at times when he’s playing his solo. He did this all the time when I was with him practicing in his house. I know that voice." He also says that folks called him John Patton around him, sounds like "Big John" was more for record covers and such. So that's pretty solid evidence for me. (Full disclosure, Mike also mentioned that Patton sounds like he's struggling a bit with his right hand, which had been injured changing a tire, but according to that piece on Andy Bleaden's blog that took place at least a couple of years after this gig. Could the friend have it wrong? Nevertheless the grunt/singing he IDs makes Mike's judgement solid to me.

Thank you Niko. That is a fantastic portrait of BJP, that's for sure. I didn't see anything about Percy but I do know he would have been one of the neighborhood musicians who was around. So not specifically mentioning him doesn't mean they didn't know each other. I've heard from Soul Stream aka Mike Flanigin and sent him my questions along with a sample. I'll post what he says and in the meantime I should mention that Mike had a new CD out last summer: http://www.mikeflanigin.com/store/west-texas-blues-cd There are samples at Amazon, I'm getting a copy for sure.

woh, thank you Justin. Auditioning and this does not sound unlike what I have with Percy. Another clue!

1954-59 if Discogs bio sketch is correct.

Yeah, that would put him on the scene or at least in the metropolitan area. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if he and Percy knew each other in the 60s if both were in NYC or nearby, and Percy often gigging with organists. I just wish I knew what he'd sound like on piano. So darn intriguing. I found Soul Stream's website hopefully he responds and can also shed light on the possibility.

So I attained a new Percy France recording, October 1988 at Flamingo Lounge in Brooklyn. Percy announces musicians at the end of set 1 ... and its "John Patton" on piano, and Wes Anderson on drums. And I am thinking, I'll never know who these two guys are, any google hit will be for Big John, and for Wes Anderson the saxophonist. Now it's been pointed out that maybe it actually could be Big John on piano? My thought is "no" because Percy doesn't introduce him as such and there's no special crowd reaction either. Then again the crowd is not too excited in general. Does anyone know definitively where Big John would have been in 1988? (Where is Soul Stream aka Mike Flanigan when you need him?) Maybe someone knows of a John Patton pianist in the late 80s on the NYC scene? I gotta admit, the thought that this maybe could be Big John on piano with Percy France is pretty exciting. edit to add: there's also the intriguing possibility that Leonard Gaskin brought his Walkman to record this gig, specifically because it was BJP?

But if the Dodgers won they take a 3-1 lead. You know the odds are strongly in their favor, historically. I always felt that Reggie was the turning point, and the way he lined up his leg with the throw it was brutally obvious, above and beyond the fact that he is supposed to abandon the baseline when he's out. One of those to keep debating I guess. -

It was, because I actually liked them! Red Sox were my AL team and Dodgers were my NL team. I think because I had to see the Yankees lose and that never happened. I remember the SI ... photo caption or was it on the cover? Anyway it was after Reggie stuck his hip out on the double play ball, clear as day, the cheater, and the photo or cover said "Lopes Mopes" or maybe "Lopes Mopes while ... " Serious question for all the baseball fans. With replay review, does Reggie get away with it? And relatedly, do the Dodgers win that game and have a much better chance of winning it all with a what, 3-1 lead at that point? RIP Tommy Lasorda. I bet he's chowing down on some real good pasta. -
I do and I should get a box frame or something and hang it up because it ain't never getting worn again (it wasn't worn much to begin with). I'd have to start the "lose x pounds a year" process for old geezers right now, and then live to 110.

I only hope they can find this guy at his homeless shelter. He should get three squares a day for the next ten years.

Well my point was that violent assault on the legislature makes Trumpers more evil than before and with a little luck Trump will be finished as a political force after this. Everyone has "soft support". Trump with insurrectionists only going forward isn't more than 20% of the population. I think. So my fear was lefties and righties fighting in the street = Trump moving to declare martial law and trying to retain power. Now I think (and hope and pray) that what must be done is that good people on both sides come together, after the Capitol is secured again, and move and vote on impeachment and conviction. He has to pay a cost. We cannot wait 14 days. For the dignity of the nation he must be removed.
-
We're getting political here but this could work out best. My personal prediction was that the presence of Trumpers would trigger the left to come out to protest, there would be clashes and then Trump would attempt to use the insurrection act to call out the army and keep himself in power. Now however, its the Trumpers who are attempting a physical coup while Trump's coup against the constitution was about to be dismissed.

Is There a List of Live Shows at Oberlin College?
Dan Gould replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
You stopped before Wynton Marsalis 1983 @ Oberlin. That's an era maybe even Jsngrey would listen to, before Marsalis got too annoying and showed no further development. -
(Still hoping to find more Gene Harris from Japan some day ... there's short video of him at a "100 Fingers" piano-fest event but none so far of what should have been his own outing; and recently I found on youtube a soundboard recording of Ray-Gene-Jeff from a previously unknown Japanese concert but there's only one tune, and the uploader hasn't been active on youtube for years so I guess he'll never share the rest of his treasure.)
-
Actually it was based on jsngry getting it for both owning it and being well aware of this player. I will say he's frustrated right now.

Ding Ding Ding. What I find especially interesting is that per the BN discography, the Preach Brother session which debuted Camp Meetin' was June 18 1962 and this 45-only recording was October 1962 per the 45Cat website (this is the B-side and as you know you should always check the flip ). I might be wrong on this but when I realized, it struck me as a really fast roll-out of Wilkerson's recording by BN, for Lazar to be covering Camp Meetin' four months later? Wilkerson's original is hoe-down style bootie-shakin music. Lazar turns it into bootie-shakin music for city folk.

No, and if those guesses are based on the whole WWFL thing, this was not a tune I picked with him in mind. Tenor is more firmly in my alley, for whatever that's worth.
-
Well yeah, but Randy has had his issues with mine in the past. No duds is high praise which I will gladly take. Yeah, no not him.
-
Nope ... and maybe it should have been WWRL instead? I apparently hit for a higher average on that score.

Stumbled across this after Ethan Iverson mentioned a Hugh Lawson trio recording on that survey he did of 1970s recordings. When I saw Lawson paired with Richard Wyands at a reasonable price, it was an easy choice with my Amazon gift card.
