  1. Regarding Dylan, yes ... but. If this hypothetical book was about that specific time frame wouldn't it have to dig into the question of selling out? by the same token this Armstrong book is not a complete overview of his life but a very specific period.
  2. Let's be realistic - the book covers the time he was "selling out" so naturally its a question to be dealt with within.
  3. I've been real good in recent months about purchasing in general but the urge to find new material at the expense of any effort to re-engage with the archive is very real. And discovering that new material isn't helped by Hutch's 70s Blog thread or the What are you Listening To thread.
  4. If it's about a compulsion toward acquisition and completist tendencies then a hard look inside and hard decisions to desist can probably be good. But I hope Lon that the joie de vivre of listening is never lost. A new online friend was telling me that his Fall semester was very difficult and energy-draining but that he listens as much as possible and that "jazz always satisfies."
  5. I am thinking I don't really agree with this ... it feels like a fix for something that isn't broken. The leagues were separate, that's just a fact. I think both are "major" but combining them when they didn't compete against each other ... to what end? Easier to track counting stats? Does this mean a Negro League museum is no longer necessary? In comparing the leagues I think that the top players would have been great if there were no color line, and there are plenty of journeymen in both leagues who wouldn't have even gotten a cup of coffee if it were truly the best 800 ballplayers. By the same token that Ruth didn't face Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson didn't face Bob Feller either. Was a 4th starter in the Negro Leagues going to get lit up or lit up worse than a 4th starter in the majors? If the results can't be known why add one league's records to another's? I have to wonder what Buck O'Neil would say about this. Maybe I'm missing something. (A thorough review by Elias Sports does sound good to me though.)
  6. I will cop to not being anything like the crazy loveable Sonny-philes here but Jeez, I'd like to think that even I would recognize mid-Sixties Sonny.
  7. Excellent to hear Jack! I was concerned Boston was going to shut down again ...
  8. https://www.mlb.com/redsox/news/hunter-renfroe-signs-with-red-sox If this means that we are out on Springer but they will spend money to get some decent starter like Kluber (isn't he top of the free agent pile?) then I am cool with it. Renfroe has hit 25+ home runs every year except this messed-up season, and he tied for lead with 13 OF assists. He also clearly has a swing made for Fenway. And, under team control for three years. What I am not convinced is whether he really needs a platoon partner. Springer hits everybody.
  9. To each their own. CDRs I've purchased have all been with Amazon as the seller, and all notated as such. So I have no idea why some are notated but others aren't. They should fix that. BTW if there's a CD Baby release someone has an interest in, if it's one Amazon is offering it's gonna be CDR. Not even sure now if CD Baby was also "on demand" in their fulfillment before they dropped sales to the public.
  10. Pretty sure I had Sahara at one time in my early jazz explorations ... I just revisited via Allmusic samples and ... yeah. Just not for me. Aural migraine. Torturous, and that was a minute at a time. (I think I may have to recalibrate my choices for next month's BFT, to "tracks Felser won't hate."
  11. "Website unavailable in my country."
  12. Bresna, Does "bronzed" mean discoloration on the front or on the burned side? I have bronzed CDRs that still play fine. Right now I am wondering about my Verbatim CDRs, recently burned, and my Sharpie on the label side is clearly visible from the rear, burned side. I've noticed this on other ones too, I think the last spindle before this was TDK.
  13. You do understand though that these aren't imprinted or pressed CDs. I don't know for sure but I wouldn't at all be surprised if there's some Amazon dude at local distribution centers who get these orders, find the audio and artwork on a server, Print and assemble the jewel box artwork, and burn the CD just the same way that you or I do on our PCs.
  14. OK that's explicitly political, if in an oblique, no-names way. You should report yourself to the mods right away, that "can we change the subject" notwithstanding.
  15. Not to mention the fact that inserts are just folded over page with no information but contents of CD. I have to admit I've never backed up a CDR purchase or burned it twice to be on the safe side. I've also never purchased anything without noticing its a CDR so I've never felt misled like Ken has. As long as the price fits the product (say around $8) I am cool with it if its the available option.
  16. The Buck Hill is I think the only Steeplechase of his I don't own, and I have had plans to secure the Hank Jones but never have done so. If the Joe Newman is the CD reissue in the "Definitive" series then I do have that. If it isn't ... I should look into what's on that one and see about getting it.
  17. This is going to go political, if it isn't already, really fast.
  18. That is really weird. I just extracted my burn of the d/l so I could examine the wav form. I've listened to about 20:00 so far and I heard exactly two, barely there pops. Scanning the wav form for the entire set I see nothing obviously damaged. Edit to add: I've listened to the whole thing now and confirm on my d/l that there are those two small "tick" sounds I mentioned. If you want to PM me your email I will send you my wav file for your enjoyment.
  19. Reminds me of the Three Sounds/Nancy Wilson release of a show at a club in St Louis in 1960 or so ... on the out announcement the upcoming act is "Lou Donaldson featuring Stanley Turrentine" ... It's like, why couldn't the tapes be rolling on that one?
  20. I want to say yes but I only rcvd the music.
  21. Huh? I had clicked the link and chose 'save as' and downloaded the MP3 and it played fine. That was a couple of weeks ago so I just tried again - still sounds fine. Which one was that SW?
  22. Here's a strong but short (<30 minutes) Booker Ervin with Pim and Ruud Jacobs and Han Bennink: https://pastdaily.com/2014/10/12/booker-ervin-quartet-in-session-at-hilversum-1966-past-daily-downbeat/
