  1. Wait a minute, which came first, Blakey in coveralls or (almost) the rest of the band? Did they put them on as a goof on their boss? I have never seen a photo of that era of the band wearing that "fashion" choice.
  2. Oh MANNNN. That's one I've been thinking about revisiting a lot, and never pulled out. If I had only ... then I might have finally nailed one (and gotten extra credit for it being a Felser BFT). Oh hell who I am I kidding. I could have heard it two days ago and wouldn't have placed it.
  3. Wonder what happened in this case then. It does make sense for landlords to take things into consideration but at the same time they are caught between their own obligations and, if residential buildings are in the portfolio, renters who may not have paid for months and months.
  4. Sad to hear ... what I wonder about is the long-term effect of rising vacancies. It sounds like landlords trying to ream renters but if the result is empty buildings, to what end? Maybe some of these clubs will ultimately come back, in some form or fashion, at one location or another.
  5. That would logically filter down from the top of the local hierarchy. And I am not sure about that, we've experienced several fine postal delivery people in the nearly five years in Plant City. What I learned quickly though was that the local post office was awful for counter service and usually has an inoperative kiosk, so my wife and I drive to the next one to the west for any mailing that has to be done. So poor workers on counter service (and limited hours) and now a poor driver who thinks its cool to throw anything out the window onto a hard concrete floor.
  6. Then I'll have to guess it's off of Ode to 52nd St, which has a couple of tracks close on the timing.
  7. Went back to the KB track ... disappointed I didn't think more about it and come up with KB - but the accompaniment is what detracted from the track. I am guessing from one of the Verve recordings? Listened again to 6 ... again too busy on the second pass. Nothing grabbed me, I'm 'fraid. Thanks again Mr. Felser, now I'm re-evaluating my choices to see if I can at least get a "push" in January.
  8. 1. Me likey (that's one). The solos, particularly the tenor, start at a place where greater intensity is almost inevitable, but none of them crossed the line for my sensitive ears ... Is this Ibrahim? I have started to explore some of his recordings especially the ones with folks like Blue Mitchell in the mix. 2. Didn't mind this one though probably don't have to hear it again but sort of dug the guitar. 3. Just OK for me ... 4. Liking this one a good deal - but no guesses. 5. Finally I can say with great exasperation NEXT! Skipping ahead .. 8. Oh man this annoys me, the title is right there but can't ID. Should have waited for someone to chime in with that bit of info. Anyway, best track of all. Is that Art Farmer? 9. From best to worst. You just couldn't program something in between, bring me down slow, could you? 11. Miles? 13. Curious to know the significance but it sure as hell ain't my thang. Do I surprise or disappoint? Well I would say overall I ended up above your expected "couple of tracks" so ... does this become an over/under for January?
  9. That is disturbing to hear, I must say. My wife's desk is right next to the porch but usually at best she hears the package land or the truck gun its motor when leaving - and the dogs are usually slow on the uptake too since she doesn't linger. We may have to figure out a way to block her from throwing anything - or at least put a note up asking for it to be brought to the door.
  10. I would have to say "rightly and wrongly". The Piano Jazz was just a licensing thing, so yeah, not really "Concord" at all. But Maybeck was a series of Concord releases with great acoustics and often equally great performances. Whatever his faults, Carl Jefferson must have OK'd that concept and execution.
  11. Only a couple? Boy you're going to feel bad after you listen to January's compilation.
  12. It's just a Christmas gift so not a huge deal on the 1st of December, but I still find this deeply annoying: It arrived yesterday at the local distribution center before 12 pm. It never made it on the delivery truck to the local PO. And to be clear, this is a first class package, no media mail. F-in lame. What is really, really lame lately is that there is a new postwoman who refuses to leave her truck to deliver boxes to our door. With the right-hand drive truck, she's realized she can drive to the rear of the house, come alongside the house and throw boxes onto our small covered concrete pad at the back door. Nothing has broken yet but we've just never taken the time to get to the local PO and log a complaint in the strongest terms possible. Lucky I am not buying any 78s lately. (And this package to be delivered isn't something fragile either).
  13. The comparison to Pablo is apt. Carl Jefferson liked a particular style and recorded/supported those artists. Hearing that the Ross Tompkins has Al Cohn I will certainly seek it out. The latter period of Cohn's career holds many delights and I'd like to hear it all ... otherwise just the Lockjaw from this week's list here.
  14. I can't make heads or tails of that dissertation, much in the same way I can't make heads or tails of late-period Coltrane. So ... Bravo! Must be right.
  15. You know its forever since I saw that, I do recall like it a lot, don't remember Slater. Did he at least not try his low-rent Nicholson impersonation in the role?
  16. Anyone unaware, Sunnyside offering 20% off thru Sunday: holiday2020sale

  18. And he's come by more than once and engaged with the commentary.
  19. Yeah that was the other thing that stood out to me ... why even go with "white" let alone for someone like Ira?
  20. Thanks Eric. This last bit is most interesting ... the news about the Land set - wish I had time to look up the details of Land dates in those years right now ... the EA part makes me wonder how old Eric was at the time. Did his obvious Coleman-isms come because he was already into his playing or because they met thru Mabern? And last but certainly not least, its interesting to know that there were tapes that all the leaders (I assume) got a copy of. Two copies of all these cassettes are out there but none of the artists/estates have them anymore? If they could be found you might have better fidelity especially if some of these infamous 30 cassettes or so are actual later generations dubs. I always assumed that the organization recorded and those were the sole copies.
  21. Is there an actual reason to care other than some obscure obsessive "record collector" reason? Is one heavier, higher quality vinyl? Is it like RVG wax vs Liberty-era reissue? I've bought Liberty-era and been perfectly content with the result but then again I don't have a special rig and don't actually "listen" to vinyl, I transfer to digital, clean up egregious pops and clicks, and enjoy on CDR.
  22. Well do report .. and were you being too careful or do you know that Black Friday jazz releases are going to sell out quickly where you live? (I guess if you know they are only getting one in stock that changes the calculation but when the Three Sounds LP was being released I was on line at opening ... and everybody went to the rock/pop section for Black Friday items and I got what I came for - and the second copy never sold, to my knowledge, before the location was closed during a consolidation of that local chain (three stores into 2).
  23. Thanks for posting, this fit the bill for online reading the morning after Thanksgiving when there's hardly any news to look at ... I find Iverson to be much better as an interviewer than in this sort of thing ... It's interesting that he (a pianist) disses Walter Bishop Jr and Duke Jordan as soloists, not to mention Joe Albany's sense of time (I just received a copy of Dickey Myers LP (Allen Lowe production) from the same year, with Albany, and the old guy absolutely sparkles. I admit I don't know the record Iverson was listening to, but he opines that Albany wasn't gigging much, and I've found quite a few jazz show listings in 1979 for Joe Albany's New Yorkers.) There are other comments but I didn't keep a running list and it's time to get ready for work so I'll just stick with my main observation for now. Oh, except that, for a lengthy post he must have worked a long time on, he could have tried his hand at editing/proofing.
  24. Well we know it wasn't a porn production company - the naughty bits would be pixelated.
