  1. Most of the usual suspects so far - plus me. Hopefully the Grand Poohbah and Thom are able to come in ... maybe Tim Webb too. And some new people would be nice ...
  2. Have to say I am intrigued by the group and the samples I heard.
  3. With $8 left on an Amazon birthday gift card from last month, I also pulled the trigger on the $6.90 new copy which is now somewhere between Atlanta and Tampa. Thanks GoM.
  4. and here is the info via promo email: Sunnyside Records just announced Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe by Kitty White with Art Simmons Orchestra, check it out here. Here’s what they say about it: “Kitty White’s Happiness is a Thing Called Joe is a welcome digital only addition to the Joe Castro's boxed set "Passion Flower - For Doris Duke". The program includes the film and music studio veteran’s rarely heard self-titled release from 1966 along with other sessions she did for Duke and Castro’s Clover Records. The recordings feature notable musicians like arranger Art Simmons, trumpeter Sonny Grey, flute and tenor saxophonist Nathan Davis, bassist Jimmy Woode and drummer Kenny Clarke.” https://joecastro.bandcamp.com/album/happiness-is-a-thing-called-joe And additional Joe Castro digital-only Joe Castro just announced San Jose's Mojo, check it out here. Here’s what they say about it: “Joe Castro’s San Jose's Mojo is a bonus recording to the boxed set "Passion Flower - For Doris Duke" (Sunnyside SSC 1393) that is available digitally. The release features a number of loose but entertaining jam sessions held at Falcon Lair with former members of the San Jose based Allyn Ferguson’s Chamber Jazz Sextet, which had broken up after touring with poet Kenneth Patchen. Vocalist Ann Richards (Stan Kenton's wife) can be heard to colorful effect on four tracks.” https://joecastro.bandcamp.com/album/san-joses-mojo
  5. All I can say is that I am thankful to have started my interest in jazz as CDs took off as a format and resulted in so many reissues, plus plentiful Liberty or UA BNs in bins where I shopped - Vintage Vinyl and Euclid Records in St Louis, then Papa Jazz in Columbia SC. It was when I got my hands on Japanese BN LPs from the Jazz Record Center that I got a much better understanding of what else had come out back when, but fortunately the internet and Amazon came along ...
  6. Saw the obit in yesterday's Times. I chuckled at the idea that the band members went for "Spencer Davis Group" with the proviso that Spencer handled interviews so the rest of the boys could sleep.
  7. I was very impressed with Epistrophy and IIRC Rouse didn't tell anyone that he was sick.
  8. I will hope and pray that no one seriously considers the extra inning rule as a permanent change. I was thinking that a universal DH could be something to give up to the players union in the upcoming negotiation - something that creates what would surely be a higher average salary roster spot for 1/2 the teams than with the current modest-hitting, usually replacement-level utility players that you need for all those inevitable double-switches.
  9. I certainly did not see that ... the poker face afterwards was great. (And Taiwan baseball broadcast in English? Is there that much interest there's an international broadcast in English?)
  10. I think the "Bosuns, Mates" is wrong too. Anyone who's watched Robert Shaw's brilliant monologue about his naval experience with sharks in Jaws remembers him describing one of the shark victims as a bosun's mate.
  11. Been a long time but I recall Blues for Duke as being a nice one ... never saw the My Buddy LP I think I'll try to find a decent copy.
  12. Yeah, I think that despite my affection for Roberts and Betts I am going to have to root for the Rays. I'll go with Mookie if/when they face the Yankees in the WS. Otherwise its Red Sox, Cubs and whoever is playing the Yankees and the Dodgers.
  13. I hadn't even been aware of Hargrove on a Steve Davis date. Noted.
  14. You should tell him that the Next button isn't encoded to go to the top of the next page ... and what is this booklet? Thanks for posting this Bertrand. Disappointed that there are no Two Tenor Boogie dates w Sammy Price and Percy France, would have been tantalizing if there were ... and no Bill Doggett w. Bubba Brooks either. Nice to see quite a few shows for Arnold Sterling, would love to hear those - and a couple for Allen Houser who self-produced some live sets from the 70s-90s that are available on Amazon as CDRs. If you've never heard of him he was a very solid Morgan-inspired trumpeter who gigged a lot with Buck Hill.
  15. What a potential treasure ... audience recordings without loud talking. You should talk to him about the dispensation of those tapes and what he actually has.
  16. With Arnold Sterling - if you're like me those tracks are standouts.
  17. I haven't read the article yet just wanted to say I hope Allen chimes in here. There is no value whatsoever in editing, denying or, no pun intended, whitewashing the past. And the past, as Allen has has argued, is more than a little complicated.
  18. I can't verify that it was a deer tick. But it should also be noted that per the CDC 20-30% of cases do NOT include the bulls eye rash.
  19. I consider them a figment of George Butler's malfeasance. Excuse me, Dr. George Butler's malfeasance. ************************************************************************************************************************** Can't believe I forgot this one since it was only this year I discovered him: Saxophonist Arnold Sterling. He made his career in Baltimore, and was close with Stitt. In the early 80s he joined Jimmy McGriff's group for about 4 or 5 LPs, the best of which was The Groover, as Sterling is the only horn on that one and he tears it up. That is on JAM records, where he also got his sole opportunity to record as a leader. And then ... his appearance on the larger scene was over, and he kept playing in Baltimore. You should seriously check him out. I'm glad I did and none of the records he is on will cost very much.
  20. thanks Brad. I don't think it can be advanced Lyme as I took the tick off less than two weeks ago.
  21. Wait until one bites you. Good news just now: Susan is negative for COVID. Given that she was about 4 days into symptoms I am confident its not a false negative. Now has to get appointment for full blood panel and Lyme test and go from there.
  22. Only using my ears to recognize that our special someone tenorist sounds a little more boyish on the last stage announcement than on the first. Was going to alter pitch via time warp to match the vocal, then apply to subsequent tune and see what we get. I am also having a hard time spotting an exact moment of speed change; tape speed didn't change on the flip as his stage announcements are still closer to basso profundo on set 2.
  23. OK, DIME people and other audio experts: How do you pitch/speed correct recordings that are fast/slow aka sharp/flat? My Goldwave has a time warp option to slow/speed sampling rate as a percentage of the original ... and I am trying first to match the stage announcement from earlier in the tape to determine how much correction is "right". Any better options/software suggested??? As always, thanks in advance.
  24. Tell it again. Tell it again!!!
  25. Might as well mention this: My wife felt ill last weekend while I was in Naples with Mom. Symptoms aren't really COVID (no cough, no congestion - fever/chills, headache, muscle ache especially back pain.) COVID test ordered, waiting on results (3-5 days given as time frame). Next day I remembered - I removed a tick from her lower leg about ten days ago. Lyme disease symptoms match on fever/chills and aches, she just doesn't have a rash around the bite. Finally got an appointment with doctor this morning (prior contacts via tel-a-doc, the second of whom thought it definitely could be Lyme but didn't issue a script for getting tested). Doctor questions that it would be Lyme but I don't think she is too well informed, stated that it takes longer for symptoms but CDC says 3-30 days for initial symptoms. Bottom line, she's waiting on COVID outcome before Lyme test. At least she prescribed pain meds because the headache prevents her from looking at a computer screen, and the backache means that the horse stalls are a foregone conclusion too (and no, I don't clean those - she has a friend who has helped with cleaning stalls and she was able to come once this week. I'm taking care of the feedings ... and those stalls are getting nasty.) For the record, its five days since I saw her with symptoms, and I obviously had contact before her symptoms started. I feel 100% fine.
