  1. Can anyone identify if this has seen commercial release? For the life of me I can't find it anywhere ... https://pastdaily.com/2020/05/17/art-blakeys-jazz-messengers-live-at-sanremo-1963-past-daily-downbeat/
  2. When I was making corrections to the tape I had that ran slow when recording, so output was faster, it was easy to tell what sounded wrong - end of the tape was a whole step fast, making a tenor sound like an alto (ironically while playing Castle Rock) and the tune before was the fastest If I Were a Bell ever. Of course, tempo can be up or way up, but you could just tell it felt wrong, and down a full step made it right. 1/2 step changes are definitely things you won't perceive as right or wrong unless you've got the trained ears for it. On the other hand, you do get longer tunes when you adjust ... this particular 90 minute tape yielded nearly 100 minutes of music! If only more people went to concerts with dying batteries.
  3. Bresna in contention for the "weird USPS tracking" award for December. But there's a lot of month left and a lot of packages to be shipped.
  4. I got it from a kind friend.
  5. I think you're using passive-aggression to call attention to your own happy day, so here you go: With work not being as early-starting anymore maybe I can resume b-day greetings in 2021.
  6. Thanks for that report Niko. I guess I'll just keep thinking about it ...
  7. Your software sounds very similar to mine ... for 1/2 a step down (eg, key of F# to key of F) I have set the pitch adjustment to .9438. A full step down is .8876. You can use the same differences from 1 if you had to go up a 1/2 step or full step. If you use the speed adjustment, equivalent would be 94.38 or 88.76. The results are the same. And of course if the results are bizarrely wrong, apologies in advance.
  8. Actually I was referring to Jim's help he's given on speed correction of a cassette recording. What I never worry about though is when people on Dime say a recording is 5c sharp or flat or some such.
  9. I don't have the ears or know keys or timbres but its helped me!
  10. I love that particular rendition too!
  11. Oh hell yeah. Was hoping for more in Box 2 but mostly unissued alternates ... not so special. But I still gotta have it.
  12. Well I would just disagree a bit and point to the Soul Gestures in Southern Blue (?) volumes. (Funny story of how I got those, I was visiting my old college town of Tallahassee and it may be the only time I bought jazz at a mall store but it was release day for these three and I snagged the three volumes at one time - had no prior knowledge, being pre-internet, and at that time "swing" and "blues" as signifiers had a lot of pull with me, so I was all in. The clerk goes "some guy reserved all three of those, he's a music major at FAMU, but since we put it on the rack, I guess I have to sell them to you." I said nothing and just took my CDs, wondering how they would deal with that poor guy who missed out.)
  13. One label that might be right up Don's alley is Sharp Nine https://www.discogs.com/label/197639-Sharp-Nine-Records Don, their motto was "Straight ahead and in the pocket" and I was never disappointed by any of their releases. You have an enormous amount of exploring to do and it could get very expensive. I don't reference his music but rather Wynton's oft-stated opinion that "true jazz" swings and has a blues feel. So I was wondering if your tastes ran a lot wider than that to encompass electronics or free or avant guard styles.
  14. Yes, this is an important question for Don ... have you sampled any of the neo-boppers? Does the idea of creativity within an older language/style appeal or are you the kind who wants the originals, as defined by those BN releases of the 50s and 60s? Relatedly, where do you stand on the Wynton Wars? There are a lot of names to add to Bill's list - Brian Lynch and Ralph Moore would be two off the top of my head.
  15. I disagree a little on the short posts being discounted ... at least when its an ongoing sleuthing process, throwing out guesses/suspicions. Separate posts for each track ... well it's not easy to cross 50,000 posts, Mr. 67500 Posts and Counting.
  16. Very curious your impressions of this set Lon. Especially the set with Cannonball (does he get some solo spots?) but really the whole thing. I know I'll pick this up eventually because I can't skip unissued Teddy Edwards but overall the recordings selected weren't as enticing as I had hoped would be in the vaults.
  17. Gotta give kudos to Felser for getting engagement from his audience. His BFT has twice as many posts as my January BFT did and in only 7 days or so. Most BFT discussion threads have been getting about 30 posts this year. And there are still regular, in depth participants who haven't engaged with it yet. OTOH I am confident he'll enjoy more of my tracks than I did of his, so ... Saul Goode.
  18. Yeah, I wasn't sure if Dylan had any deal where he owned the recordings/masters. Maybe he was tired of paying off the recording costs and decided to take this deal instead?
  19. Depends on those licensing deals doesn't it? The companies (and I guess people) who buy rights to big names are thinking very long term. Wait a sec, does this mean UMG owns the rights to sell the recordings as well? That changes the calculation too ... for one thing, soon as dies there will be a ton of money to be made. Which can't be too far off if he's nearly 80.
  20. With the lack of a new Houston Person CD this season, this is doing quite nicely. Available as CDR from Amazon for $10.
  21. Being so far off the street we don't worry too much about porch pirates but on the other hand some FedEx and UPS drivers look at the proximity between our perimeter fence and the driveway and assume there is no room to turn around and stop at the street and leave boxes there ... sometimes hidden sometimes in plain sight. A lack of pedestrian traffic has probably saved us some aggravation. I assume people have seen this guy's porch pirate treatment:
  22. It just dawned on me - and I believe a quick search provides verification - that Houston Person has no new CD out this fall? It seems he's had a new Highnote release every Fall, which I often have asked others for as X-mas suggestions. I hope he's not experiencing any health issues but it seems strange not to see something new from the big tenorist.
  23. This leaves me wondering what the shipping charge will be for the new Joe Castro box.
