  1. I believe there are two Horace Silver sets, 1959 and 1960 I think, one of which features tracks from Blowing the Blues Away when it was so fresh they hadn't even laid down the Blue Note album yet. There's also a Hank + Lee Messengers session from 1959. Those are the best of the best imho.
  2. Over a year later, I took the plunge this weekend and got on the Harry's program. $15 every two months, free razor and shipping. It's less than $2 a blade so the price is much better, and lately Publix has been out of stock on those suckers anyway almost every time I need to hold my nose and buy more. Down to my last one though so the economy shipping better get the new ones here fast.
  3. So was there original DB content about Hank around that time? I thought Hank didn't get personal attention from DB until the interview/feature in the 70s. (Was that Litweiler who wrote it? I can't recall now ...)
  4. Yes, and yes - for the public affairs show sketch where he tells Garrett Morris that light-skinned blacks are smarter than dark-skinned blacks. (Can't imagine a joke like that going over now but back then ...
  5. That's pretty cool. I wonder if our DB alum can shed light on the question. Really makes me wonder what was written about him, it was right around the time that his Soul Station - Roll Call - Workout brilliance was 'new'.
  6. I hesitate to ask what "top of the line" Siemens now run and of course if you don't want to post it you could always PM me. My real problem is that the audiologist/client who gave me a deal is now out of the biz entirely after like, 30 years, so I got no one to help out on the other side of the desk when mine start to go.
  7. I think I'd just bookmark the NYT link I added but I'm sure Larry and I would be happy to answer questions when you have them. No idea, I ended up at a Hear USA office because the head audiologist was a client of the agency and agreed to offer me a 'deal' and they happen to deal in Siemens aids.
  8. Were you using the music setting for listening at home or only live gigs? Maybe you should plan to keep the old ones as long as they still sound good.
  9. Larry, I was fortunate to have employers who valued my work enough to offer to pay 1/2 for hearing aids 4.5 years ago. I'd never considered them before although I had hearing loss from the age of 6 due to a childhood disease. Made such a difference in quality of life as I am sure you realized yourself. Now I live in fear that they will break down/fail and as of a year ago they stopped offering an extended warranty on them. I don't know how I'd come up with the money to replace them - these were about $5K list price I also have a Siemens model with the multiple programmable settings but the one I used to use for "music" wasn't even presented to me as being designed that way. It was basically programmed as the same pattern as for speech, just *louder*. I really only used it if I wanted hear someone whispering across the room, make sure they weren't talking about me. Anyway - I am very confused as to why, if your units are reaching the end of their useful life, the speech setting would sound poor but the music setting would still sound good. Did they first program the current aids to your current pattern of hearing loss? I strongly suspect that they are trying to sell you on a new set that you don't need yet, it sounds to me like you only need a corrected program setting for speech on the current aids. When the current aids fail completely you may be stuck with getting new ones that aren't so hot on the music setting. Or you may want to look into repair of the current ones, check out this NYT article: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/22/the-hunt-for-an-affordable-hearing-aid/
  10. That's a serious seller, too, with that level of detail in his listing.
  11. My problem is that in just over 30 days I turn 50, and my non-negotiable goal was to reach a size 36 pants by then. I'm close, but the pace of weight loss/body redistribution is so variable I can't be sure if it will happen or not. I should probably concentrate on the fact that I was 210 last weekend and that is 50 pounds or a little more from my high before I started this long, long slog to something resembling fitness. By the way Jim, first permanent change I made was diet soda. Water and iced tea is it for me.
  12. Pat Patrick And The Baritone Saxophone Retinue, Sound Advice is seeing a reissue: http://www.forcedexposure.com/CloseUp/patrick-and-the-baritone-saxophone-retinue-pat-sound-advice-cd/ARTYARD.014CD.html Seems like a rarity so I figured some would be interested. And if you're concerned about lineage/rights:
  13. Happy Happy my friend!
  14. Excellent remembrance by Grantland's The Masked Man: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/rowdy-roddy-piper-obituary-remembrance-wwe-professional-wrestling-hulk-hogan-andre-the-giant-wrestlemania-3-jimmy-superfly-snuka/
  15. Let me go out on a limb and suggest that Eric meant to say "but not terribly so". It's been a while and I really should pull out this music again but my recollection tracks with everybody else - acceptable sound, better than a lot of these types of recordings. And great music.
  16. And I have a question - for myself, but in the belief that confession is good for the soul: How did this so-called "Dexaholic" never buy this? Was I never aware of it? I have a hard time believing that. Did my awareness pre-date my appreciation for Gene Ammons and I didn't want to hear a tenor battle? (don't think so because the 1940s 'battle' recordings were some of the earliest Dex I owned.) I am proud (and yet somewhat ashamed) to say that the OJC reissue is on it's way from a seller in GA so at least I'll be able to say that I finally heard this one soon. And only 25 years late, give or take.
  17. FWIW, this project is by Sharony Andrews Green, who wrote the not-universally loved Grant Green: Rediscovering the Forgotten Genius of Jazz Guitar. Hopefully the film will be better regarded than her book (for the record, I didn't have as negative a reaction to the book as some did).
  18. I think David has answered that question. If the Fresh Sounds set gives credit to Howard Rumsey then it has to be at the Lighthouse. Unless, that is, Rumsey was also involved in the Both/And club? Thanks for setting the record straight, David.
  19. I always think of these as akin to the old Downbeat "Talent Deserving Wider Recognition" poll question.
  20. Yeah right. They'll be bidding a lot for Price, I'll wager. Goodie needs to be real worried that Price lands in L.A. Can you imagine a playoff rotation of Kershaw, Grienke and Price?
  21. Nat Simpkins. Another Steeplechase artist that is overlooked IMHO is Tad Shull.
  22. Since 'pianists' was a popular topic what about saxophonists? I thought about this one after listening to Rickey Woodard's latest, Pineapple Delight. It's a winner from start to finish but I think Rickey is very underappreciated. I got it from Eastwind Imports and they still have it available for only $7: http://www.eastwindimport.com/default.asp?categoryname=Woodard%2C+Rickey it's also available from CDBaby http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/rickeywoodard5 Who else is overlooked?
  23. "All Mornin' Long" is a great track but for my money it's "Tanya" from One Flight Up.
