Not sure why it would be an "outtake" but DING DING.

Negative. I don't think its likely to come to this track thru the organist.

From the author of The Perfect Storm, a decidedly different topic but handled in much the same way (a compelling tale told with the inclusion of a lot of information you didn't know you'd enjoy learning): The basic situation was that at the age of 58 he had an anyeurism near his pancreas and came very close to dying. His dead father, a highly rational scientist, appeared to him in the hospital while they were working on keeping him alive ... kinda threw him for a loop as he had no religious adherence himself either. Having turned 60 recently and despite having achieved a general level of "healthiness" in the past year and a half, my own mortality has penetrated my thoughts to a greater degree than ever before, so this was an interesting book to read. Recommended - and definitely not the "this is what heaven is like" kind of story.

Sad news to hear.

Well done. Track 10 is quite obscure IMO, and a lot like the Gene Harris recordings on JAM records, as they both are about 50/50 between the worst of the artists 70s-era dreck alongside tracks that recall their best (or close to) straightahead recordings. I nearly chose "Jive Samba" instead of "Butterfat" but then we wouldn't have taken this detour into the Very Average White Band so its Saul Goode.

Sounds like Vibe Coding could really help out Cyberdyne Systems in their long-term goals. -

New Percy to share this New Years Day, all from the same August 29 1982 show linked above. All after Papa Jo left the stand, first Percy plays "I Can't Get Started" - he joked that first they didn't have a pianist, then they lost their drummer, before Al Dreares came out of the audience to play the rest of the set, so the group "Can't Get Started". And then the show got extra special. I knew early on that Percy played with Big Joe Turner at Tramps but no recordings turned up in the Leonard Gaskin Papers, so having Big Joe sing two songs with Percy made this show a true keeper.

Let's get this party started, if anyone is so inclined New Year's Eve. 10 tunes / 66 minutes or so. Same programming approach as a year ago, in this case five pairs of different performances of the same tune. All but one are standards and I expect will at least be ID'd. One track is an absolute gimme but that means its probably 50/50 ID'd/missed. No Percy France, no Gene Harris. Actually there isn't even a faux Gene Harris track to throw you off. https://thomkeith.net/2026-organissimo-blindfold-tests/

Because my BFT is all predicated on tunes people should know, I'd like to point out that I named track 2 correctly and first, but without any acknowledgement.

It's that time of year ... anyone? Bueller? I have a couple that are definitely do-able. 1. I may be down 90 pounds in 18 months but the progress stopped dead, more or less, for the last six months. Very frustrating because the waist size is not yet acceptable and I would like to reach the point where I feel I can slack off occasionally and not sweat eating things I like again. I'll be happy to get to 175, happier at 170 with a ceiling of 175. So 10-15 pounds. 2. Percy France - more regular uploads, update the website, and most importantly, write and get published a profile. Hot House and The Syncopated Times have expressed interest. I may ask Jazz Times too. Now to put together all the info including bits and pieces from different interviews that Phil Schaap gifted the world. And more generally: More time for reading, less time for TV unless it's catching up on some DVDs that sit on the shelves. How's about you?

I got to thinking about how the author of the Junior Cook biography had census information about Junior and his parents so I went searching ... it took a little while to find but I can definitely affirm that is the Percy France's signature on the draft registration card. Entirely coincidental but he and I share a middle name.

I think I want a tenor interpreting Tina's tunes but I will probably sample the tracks on bandcamp.

I cannot understand letting Rob Refsnyder leave. Do they really prefer a fourth outfielder with more balanced stats? Refsnyder ranks with the very best hitters in the game over the past three years against southpaws and there are certainly some tough lefties in the division and league. A weapon like that ought not to be cast aside, and while his salary doubled, the increase is a rounding error in the context of the entire payroll. Dumb.

Very happy to share two tunes featuring Percy France and Papa Jo Jones ... I learned a couple of months back that Percy was the last tenor saxophonist to play in Papa Jo Jones & Friends but was so disappointed to not find any recorded examples of those gigs to date. But a WKCR Benefit at The West End is better than none. With Loren Schoenberg (piano) and Skinny Burgan (bass):
