  1. I can't even remotely perceive the influence of Jamal on this record. But that's just me.
  2. The Yankee window never closes. They spend $120 million for Lee, they'll find the money to make up for any prior mistakes - even if it means they pay 20 million plus for Jeter and A-Rod and only get part-time players for the money. Holiday might have been smart to re-think the long-term prospects of the Phillies, actually. Change is coming - like Werth leaving - and Ryan Howard is on the decline and will take up a big part of the budget as he goes downhill. I don't know enough about their farm system but it seems that what they've given up (to get him) and what they got (sending Lee away) wasn't much. Is this a final hurrah for the Fightins? Every player loves the team they are on, especially when the team is going good. But money talks and I don't see Lee ignoring NY's money. Not to mention the fact that Yankee stadium is designed for lefties and Texas is a hitting paradise. He puts up better numbers in NY, too.
  3. The chances of Cliff Lee not sitting in between Sabathia and Cashman for a mid-December press conference at Yankee Stadium are about .0001 less than the chance that Jeter will volunteer to play LF for the Mets in 2011.
  4. Let's not forget the troubles the Rangers have had at home in October. Best thing for them is to come out relaxed and smack Sabathia around, and have Wilson pitch as well as he did in the first game - and a lefty in the Bronx is at an advantage. I'd want to get this over with and not let the Yankees get any ideas.
  5. For all the agita Yankee fans are feeling over AJ Burnett, the reality is that they are facing a mediocre right-handed pitcher in a little league field designed for the destruction of mediocre righties. AJ could get clobbered and the Yankees could very easily win game 4. And if they do, they have Sabathia going on full rest in the stadium where he's been nearly unbeatable. Quite simply, I'll make this prediction: If the Rangers don't win game 4, they won't get to a game 7 hoping that Cliff Lee will save their cojones. And the Game 1 meltdown, aided and abetted by a foolish manager, will loom very, very large.
  6. From what I've been reading, this encapsulates the problem with parents today. I don't know how many articles I've read about parents sticking their noses in when their kids in college have roommate problems, or this problem or that problem - just as they have since they were 2. Pathetic - and the kids not only end up laboring under the delusion that they're "special" they are in fact nonfunctional. (And no implied criticism of you, Brad! ) On the topic at hand, I'm glad your wife's surgery went well. I'm sure you'll adjust to these changes and as its been noted, you may come to a time when you're like Al Bundy or Cliff Huxtable, just praying to get the kids out of the house.
  7. Anyone else not all that surprised that the Phillies won and got the split? Yeah its tough to lose with your ace on the mound, but the other team's ace was on the mound, too. The Phils have more horses plus the home-field advantage. I fully expect them to come out on top. Would be pretty impressive, the first NL team to go to the World Series three years in a row since WWII.
  8. Thanks for adding those links, from the original youtube clip it didn't sound like there was any other recorded Hank from the gig. I think Hank sounds better on this tune, is it possibly a function of the ballad tempo being less of a challenge to his chops? Anyway, I don't think of this as horrendously "sad" and I'm thankful that someone was at the gig and can share what survives from it.
  9. Rick Fucking Aguilera made a career out of doing it. Are you EVER gonna get over '86? Are you EVER gonna get your head out of your ass? What would my comment possibly have to do with 1986? From 1990 to 1994 Rick Fucking Aguilera made a living retiring three, and only three batters, and never ever coming into a situation with runners ready on base or being asked to get more than three outs. Living proof that on average, a major league pitcher can get three outs before blowing a one, two or three run lead. Living proof that the save is a worthless statistic. Anyone else laughing over the fact that Joba is the first guy out of the bullpen in both games? This was the guy who was supposed to dominate the eighth inning and instead he's one of the scrubs who comes in when they're losing. And the first one at that. I'll bet you Joba is wondering where the hell is mojo went. And that 2007 was a long time ago.
  10. Frankly Jazz was hosted by Frank Evans who was a jazz DJ in LA. It was done in association with Pacific Jazz & Dick Bock, I believe. At one time I stumbled across a Frank Evans website created by his son, Lance, but it never became anything more than a placeholder. So its great that they created a Frankly Jazz channel on youtube. I've got a VHS transfer of the Gerald Wilson performance, courtesy of MartyJazz. The Dupree Bolton Uptown release of a couple of years ago starts off with audio from a Frankly Jazz broadcast of the Curtis Amy Sextet.
  11. You absolutely can blame the coke-head. He never got the memo that for the most important outs of the game you use your best relief pitcher. At minimum he goes to his closer when they loaded the bases with no outs (and I shut off the fucking thing). Yeah, yeah, "but if you do that, who pitches the ninth?" If they keep a three run lead going into the ninth, chances are anyone could have pitched the ninth for the save. Rick Fucking Aguilera made a career out of doing it.
  12. The greater part of the schedule problem is the fact that TBS broadcasts each division series which forces both the staggered start and extra off-days. If the broadcast rights were shared then there wouldn't be these extra days but then again, you'd have conflicts between broadcasts and you couldn't watch one after the other. Now, when do pitchers and catchers report?
  13. I believe the Messengers set includes Woody Shaw ...
  14. Just let me know when the dates are solidified and there's no way we won't make at least one gig.
  15. Any word about Florida in the new year?
  16. No I-Pod and not the slightest interest in owning one. When I sold off my collection in 2008 it was purely for economic reasons - as well as the fact that I could save burns and live without the actual disc (I don't care if anyone thinks this is wrong, unethical or heaven forbid, illegal) and it was the same when I liquidated the vinyl earlier this year. Now that I have strong hopes for my income going forward (just got my CSR license from the state of Florida, btw), I still have no great urge to buy as I once did. That urge seems entirely to be a thing of the past.
  17. Has anyone heard his recording with Joe Williams? I think it came out in the early 70s, saw a reissue maybe five years ago, perhaps more. Pretty nice but I've never felt any need to explore Shearing any further.
  18. These were my thoughts too except that I'd like to think that I'd recognize Hank's sound even though its closer to the Breakthrough! recording than the BNs.
  19. I didn't think of it in those specific terms but yeah, while listening to this I was wondering what Hank got for the gig - $50 for the night? $100? Or just a share of the door, if there was a cover?
  20. Sorry Allen I should have just quoted from the Youtube page: If you go to the youtube page you'll see our friend Aric has already commented.
  21. Hank Mobley with Duke Jordan at the Angry Squire, NYC, Friday November 22 1985. Unfortunately this is the only recording featuring Hank that exists due to an equipment malfunction. What do you think? To me, its still Hank and I actually like this performance better than the performance of "Autumn Leaves" that turned up on the Tete Montoliu trio release on Steeplechase. Hank would be dead in six months and a week.
