  1. Yeah, but the former GHF took a pass on your BFT, Evan. No particular reason other than general BFT burn out of late. Then imagine my surprise when I read through the discussion thread, and see all the clues - the tune, the bassist - I'm virtually certain this is my man Gene ... then I see some of the disses he's getting - "ideas are none too fresh" Just my luck - someone programs Gene Harris, I would have picked it out in a second (not to mention the fact I recently got an audiophile pressing of this LP, so I've been hearing this track anyway) and I'm not in on the fun. Not a swing and a miss ... rather the pitcher laid in a fat one after right after I come out of the game.
  2. What Jim said. If I had a bite and an expanding area of swelling, I'd have my ass to an emergency room or immediate medical care operation without even asking anyone.
  3. I'm sorry that race is part of the picture. Let's suppose she was white. I don't think a stripper with that history should be able to ruin the reputations of college students. Hey, if they are guilty of rape, they're guilty. Or are you saying it's okay to rape some women? A stripper who's been raped, white or black, definitely should be able to ruin the reputations of college students who are guilty of her rape.
  4. Has it occured to you that he's making the comparison to Redman, Payton, McBride because those are the Verve artists that had a moment in the sun? None of this is surprising in today's market. Would you feel better if he said that "nothing is coming along that is particularly marketable?" Dave James hits the nail on the head - even though I don't take the blame (which usually works out this way: you're such a jazz fan, you should be buying new stuff instead of old stuff).
  5. Shawn, if you don't mind my asking, why do you prefer Soundforge for editing when you already have/are using Goldwave?
  6. Dan, according to my research and please correct me if I'm wrong, the six songs were: Ain't Nobody's Business Blues Stay Away from Me Eyesight to the Blind Five Long Years Make Me Blue A Woman Don't Care Ain't Nobody's Business was released as a single (Kent 447), on the LP "The Jungle" (Kent 521/5021) and was reissued both on "The Vintage Years" box set and more recently on "Original Greatest Hits" (Virgin 11654). Blues Stay Away from Me was released as a single (Kent 458), on the LP "Rock Me Baby" (Kent 512/5012), and was also reissued on "The Vintage Years" and "Original Greatest Hits." Eyesight to the Blind with overdubbed horns was released as a single (Kent 441) and reissued on "The Best of the Kent Singles" (Ace 760). The version without horns was issued on "The Jungle" LP and reissued on "B.B. King" aka "The Soul of B.B. King" (Ace 986). Five Long Years was on Kent single 445 and on "The Jungle" and was reissued on both "The Best of the Kent Singles" and "The Vintage Years." Make Me Blue was first released in Japan and is on "The Vintage Years." A Woman Don't Care with overdubbed horns is on "B.B. King" aka "The Soul of B.B. King" and without horns on "The Great B.B. King (Ace 1049). The version with horns is mono while the one with horns is in stereo. Four of these songs were covers, but B.B. is credited with writing both Make Me Blue and A Woman Don't Care. Perhaps these were songs that he had no intention of recording for ABC? Since the Biharis didn't release either one, maybe they agreed that the songs lacked commercial potential. Thanks a lot for the info. As far as Twist goes, I thought Steve Gray identified that the LP had a handful of tunes not on other Crown LPs and not reissued elsewhere in the series?
  7. A few clarifications, Conrad: The coach tendered his resignation. There was no connection between the party and him personally. With his record of successful teams, he'll have no problem getting another coaching job. The team didn't disband, it forfeited the remainder of the season, which was only a few matches anyway. I think there is tremendous pressure on the DA to prosecute this case. Otherwise, it seems like the one guy you mentioned with the cel phone, independent corraboration of the cabbie, dorm card swipe records, etc., would have no trouble avoiding charges. But he's one of the two that the woman identified "100%" from photos, so ... And the reported DNA results makes for an interesting situation: there must have been biological material recovered from the woman - otherwise, there is no need for DNA testing. If there really is no match between any player and the material recovered, tell me that isn't reasonable doubt? I don't want to prejudge but this is looking perhaps like a situation where racial terms may have been used and the woman reacted by crying "rape" to get back at them.
  8. You need to have two sound cards and an audio editor/recorder software program. I use Goldwave, which is about $30 and also has a shareware version available. The current version has about six different inputs you can select, 'Stereo Mix' is the one that will monitor a streaming download. One very important thing I've noticed: The soundcard which is utilized for the playing of the download also is the soundcard that Windows/IE uses for the click sound when you click on a link. So I've discovered that if I want to record audio like that, I can't do any surfing simultaneously, unless I want to go into the wav file and delete all the clicks I've put in there. BTW, I've used this system to record the live tracks Jim put up on the Organissimo My Space page, as well as grabbing the audio clips from some of the interesting/rare youtube.com video clips.
  9. I'm usually the last guy with any usable suggestions, but which version of Windows are you using, and does it have the option to "reset" to a time prior to the current troubles? I don't know if that would work or not ...
  10. Because certain networks know that if they weren't part of a Basic or Basic + package, they'd never survive on their own with people actually choosing to pay for their programming. There will never be ala carte cable or satellite service, no matter how much sense it may make to consumers.
  11. For those who are interested, the B.B. King Sings Spirituals CD is now out. The Ace Records info page is here.
  12. Well, Tony Bennett was busy and everyone else is already dead. Harry Connick has a better handle on the material and he ain't dead. But he also ain't Rod Stewart, so we are treated to the frightening image of him giving guidance on these songs.
  13. What a f*cked up world we live in: Rod Stewart is the special guest for "American Songbook" week, like he's an expert because of those horrifying CDs, like he's an expert on the genre the way Kenny Rogers is an expert on country.
  14. anyone, except perhaps Keanu Reeves. Cruise is still a better actor than him.
  15. Huh? The only greater mismatch of actor and hack was Pacino and Keanu in "Devil's Advocate". And its not coincidental that both Nicholson and Pacino chewed the scenery in those films with greater gusto than anyone could have imagined.
  16. I'm pretty sure Jazz Hour is a bootleg operation.
  17. OK, April 1, I'm so hopped up by Jim S.'s review of the Gene Conners Black & Blue release, I start searching for the disc. Everywhere I look, its not in stock, long timeline to secure, then I find it in the Doubletime Jazz listings, supposedly in stock, so I pull the trigger. Now, two plus weeks later, I haven't seen the disc yet, and can't raise any response from the company. I sent an email to the address that sent the purchase receipt, and then I tried the contact email on the website, and still, nothing. I'd call their 800 number but if memory serves, its just a voicemail line, and it doesn't seem to make much sense, yelling at a machine when I want to talk to a human being. Does anyone have any recent experience with Doubletime? Can anyone offer any sort of reassurance that they will either provide the disc I purchased or finally get in touch with me? Thanks.
  18. Do I read this correctly that she moved in with you three months after the wedding?
  19. Funny, Jack, but I had the opposite reaction to the CD with the Phillip Morris Superband. Having loved Gene Harris' way with the blues for so long, I was so excited to see that CD hit the shelves, and so disappointed when I discovered that Gene didn't get a single chance to solo on the whole record. What a wasted opportunity. I got rid of that CD (the only Gene Harris recording I didn't keep (other than the 70s Blue Notes) and only returned to it after Harris died. At that point I knew what was in store, and I realized it did capture B.B. on a pretty good night. Still pissed about the way Gene was used, but I've since heard private recordings of the tour that B.B. and Ray Charles did with the Superband and they've demonstrated that the way it operated was that Gene would get one chance to solo when Ray and B.B. came out for the encore, and that was it. Thanks for the report on the other seventies stuff, I've had Live at the Regal and Blues is King much longer than I've had the Crown reissues.
  20. Mostly I think you need the hitting to come around, particularly Ichiro and Beltre (not sure if Jurassic Carl has much left, though he hit a homer today) but I'd say the future is looking pretty good. Imagine what the Sox staff will look like if Foulke can return to closing and Papelbon goes into the rotation - or if Clemens returns - or if the Marlins really are willing to part with D-Train! In the meantime, I'm still worried about the offense, at least until Coco gets back and Manny becomes Manny again.
  21. Tough loss Johnny. Must be tougher seeing as it comes after Everyday Eddie strikes out Pena and Mohr and goes 0-2 on Youklis.
  22. Anyone?
  23. Up for air, as this B.B. fanatic is dying to find out how he can secure these last six Bihari tracks!
  24. This report isn't exactly completely accurate. In Great Britain specifically, "spaz" is considered deragatory for those with muscular dystrophy and similar afflictions. So Tiger was specifically reacting to the uproar there. FWIW, a friend who works in Special Ed is highly sensitive and critical to the term "retard" or "'tard" - is that "political correctness run amok"? I vote no.
