Sometime ago, I used a Border's Gift Card I received to purchase Gene Harris Listen Here as a Concord Hybrid reissue. I figured that if I ever decided to go somewhere to check out an SACD system, I'd rather have my own SACD to use to demo it, but I certainly wasn't about to shell out cash for it.

AMG says Drummond is the leader, I always thought the three were co-leaders, actually. But no matter-its highly recommended if you can find it.

2004-05 Hot Stove League

One more bit of news, David: In the aftermath of Pedro's betrayal, the Sox have thrown more money at Renteria and apparently they have an agreement. Now, it will take a lot of getting used to with Wells in the rotation, but I like the fact that so little of his money is guaranteed. If he pitches effectively and earns his incentives, than I think that will have to mean that the Red Sox did well in his starts and will have done well for his two seasons. After all, if he's healthy enough to pitch but too old to be effective, they'll release him and only be on the hook for four or five million a year. Now, as to Pavano, it was definitely a surprise because so much had been said that Pavano wanted to come to the Sox, wanted to learn from Schilling, etc., etc., and yet in the end, apparently the family connection to the Yankees (Mom and Dad HUGE fans) tipped the balance. I still say the Yanks overpaid, and Pavano has to prove he can remain healthy and build on his recent success. No guarantees there, and another thing to consider is how another fine NL pitcher, Vasquez, hasn't exactly blown the AL away. It is a challenge, with DHs instead of ptichers. Which takes us to Pedro. He deserves what he is gong to get: Crap from the NY tabloids the first time and every time he pulls his Diva act. Crap (hopefully) from management who, we can only hope, will not tolerate the diva crap the way the Red Sox did (can Willie Randolph afford to lose the clubhouse in his very first managing job at any level?). The pleasure of being king of the hill of a losing franchise. The Mets have lost 90 + two years running. With or without Pedro, they are a bad, bad, team, with an aging, brittle offense, and an aging and/or brittle pitching staff. This remains a losing team. Pedro may win 20 again in the NL-no DH may mean that he gets to go 7 + instead of 6 or 6 +, but he will not get a sniff of the playoffs ever again, while I fully expect the Red Sox to do what is necessary to remain highly competitive and reach the playoffs. And, of course, at any time going forward, the Mets will get what they deserve for throwing so much money at him: a blown out shoulder on an uninsured pitcher. Yes, you can tell, I am PISSED. I am pissed because replacing Pedro's production in 2005, and possibly 2006, will be very hard to do. But beyond that, he is not worth the $$. Furthermore, we won't be hearing anymore "Who's Your Daddy?" and we can only hope that his replacement is someone who isn't AFRAID to face the Yankees. In the end, I am really pissed at Pedro for lying. He said he wanted to return. He said he wanted to finish his career in Boston. The Red Sox did what should have been necessary to insure that: They gave him more money than they're paying Schilling. That's not respect? No, its not ENOUGH respect, because to Pedro, RESPECT=DOLLARS. Pedro has no concept of anything other than the benjamins. He has no idea how nasty the NY tabloids can be. He has no idea, nor did he care, about the reservoir of goodwill he had in Boston. He could have done a Mark McGuire, or a Brad Radke, and taken a respectable amount of $$ and stayed where he was happy and loved. But no. Fuck him! Oh, and one more thing: He still gets to hear "Who's Your Daddy?" at least twice a year. I'll be very interested to hear Brad's feelings on getting this guy. -
Happy birthday, John!

My experience with Atomic Records is that they are highly accurate in their grading.

Well, yes, Walmart started in the hinterlands and now have stores in all the major suburbs, BUT if you look at who shops there (if you look at their demos) it is highly skewed toward the (broadly defined) proletariat (service workers, manufacturing workers). Though some of these folks make pretty good money, most of those good-paying job sectors are in steep decline (manufacturing), and the outlook for service workers over the next couple of decades is a decline in real earnings as the collective shit starts hitting the collective fan on US trade and fiscal deficits. Though real earnings for American workers have stagnated, there are far more cheap goods on the market (Krugman has written on this a few times). Walmart has specialized in bringing these cheap goods at absolutely minimal overhead cost to the American prole and getting a huge share of proletarian disposible income. Now, if proletarian income goes down, Walmart gets hurt badly. This is where your argument completely jumps the track. So ... Walmart only gets "proletarian" income, and Target gets the income of what I guess might be described as the middle class and those who really aspire to it. What is going to happen to all those poor proletariat people? Are they going to just disappear from the face of the Earth? Or will they all get fabulous job training and wonderful new jobs that take them straight into the middle class and the clutches of Target? Will they all just die off? Or maybe, IF the shit hits the fan, the incomes of a helluva lot of people, not just the proletarian income, is going to go down, and maybe all of a sudden Walmart's prices might look better and better. Another factor to consider: Walmart is, I believe, swimming in cash. It is more likely that they improve the appearance of their stores, at a tiny cost to their bottom line, in order to compete with Target for these higher income people. ******************** You mention Paul Krugman, and I know everyone around here thinks Krugman is the greatest economic analyst since Keynes, so here's a little corrective to that perception. The moral of the story? Y'all should learn to take what Krugman says with more than a few grains of salt.

When I interviewed Eddie Higgins, I actually played a cut from that Inter-action album, "My Blue Heaven," and when Young took his solo, Eddie was laughing the whole time. I remember the liners refer to Young's "controlled raucousness" or something like that.

Its up on ebay as we speak: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4058820945&rd=1 Thanks! It's in the cross-hairs.. I see that with a day to go, at around $20.00, the reserve hasn't been met yet. Having dealt with Atomic Records several times in the past, I will bet that their reserve on this record is $50.00. It seems as though every album I've won from them had that reserve.

I think some Xanadu dates made it to emusic, transferred from previously unplayed vinyl.

MIA, too, and I'm pretty sure Marty Jazz is as well.

Why butt in with negativity? People aren't debating Gene Harris' music, they're sharing recommendations. If you don't have any, than kindly butt out. And if you really don't have the taste to appreciate any of his music, then to borrow a phrase, If you do not like Gene Harris, you are stupid ass-donkey moron who no like jazz!!!

Gene always makes bleak days brighter for me!

I don't want to listen to Bill Evans and have no guilt whatsoever! -
As my father would say, its a "naked nudnik"!

No kids yet, but I intend to be a complete fuddy duddy when the time comes. As for my parents, my Mom has always had younger taste than my Dad, and in fact she quite enjoys Delbert McClinton when I've played it in the car when I'm home. Its funny, cause she really enjoys "Never Been Rocked Enough" (an ode to needing the right man to push those buttons) while, in my high school days, she absolutely hated the only slightly more explicit, "Feel Like Makin' Love."

Brad is right, Moods is the one to get first. As for others, I would say to bear in mind that pretty much all of the first Blue Notes are very good, and difficult to distinguish between. And since they're tough to find, with only a few seeing regular EMI reissue, any that you find are worth getting. That being said, Live at the Lighthouse and the two It Club volumes come from their second tour with Blue Note when the group got more funky and the original members of the Sounds started to leave and the focus shifted more strongly to Gene. I dig them but they're different from the classic BN era and I'd probably get them last.

There were a number of Big band recordings led by Gene. They're nice, if you want big band, but if you're looking for Gene there are other places to go first. That one is one of the better one's though.

A very happy birthday to my favorite lefty on the board! -
Have you considered giving them Mosaic's phone number? Its not toll free, but if you use a cel and have plenty of minutes, who cares? My Mom wouldn't even know how to turn on a PC but she's managed to order Mosaic sets for a long, long time.

Silly of me to forget Trio + 1. Definitely a highlight of his Concord years.

That's funny, this was one of the "Blue Note" links on my BFT (Dwight Dickerson on this and Dwight Dickerson on the Rickey Woodard cover of "Jeannine". Of course, there was obviously a stronger Blue Note connection in there anyway ...

Believe me, I'm still a Gene Harris fanatic but that was my handle at the BNBB and I decided a change was in order when I registered here.
