  1. I just hope that Mintkiewicz isn't hurting his chances of sticking with the club if he doesn't let them have the ball. I'd much prefer if they trade Millar and keep Doug's superior glove and likely-to-be-solid bat.
  2. So, in the week between Christmas and New Year's I was bored as heck at work and found myself cruising the Bastard's Upcoming Release page, and I see Johnny Almond Music Machine, Hollywood Blues and luckily the Bastard's had their stock B.S. review that happened to mention the sidemen: Curtis Amy Hadley Caliman Vi Redd Joe Pass Charles Kynard So, my interest was peaked enough to wonder about this CD which is due February 2nd but not interested enough to automatically shell out the $25+ to get it. Luckily, a VG+ copy for $7 was only a google search away. Now that I got the record, I'd like to give a heads up to all soul jazz, organ groovin' cats that if cash flow allows, this is one to get! Turns out Johnny Almond was, at the time, a 23 year old Brit who had just recently hooked up with the John Mayall band, they played the Newport Jazz Festival in the summer of '69, and in September, Leonard Feather arranged for a recording session (and got Almond to use one of his tunes, natch) with those California heavyweights listed above. The session is a definite success, with Almond pairing up with a different saxophonist on each cut, more or less, and usually holding his own. He also shows his dexterity by playing alto, tenor, flute, vibes and organ. I'm really wondering what happened to the dude-maybe one of our Brit friends knows? Anywhoo, soul and organ jazz folks are hereby encouraged to consider Johnny Almond Music Machine, Hollywood Blues when the Bastards start stocking it in February!
  3. I just received a super obscure LP which introduced me to a British guy who played with John Mayall and made a single jazz album with the likes of Curtis Amy, Hadley Caliman, Vi Redd and Joe Pass: Johnny Almond. On the LP he plays: alto tenor flute vibes organ and something else I can't think of at the moment. Good LP, its coming out as a Japanese reissue soon and I'm going to start a thread to alert people about it.
  4. Hang in there, Jim and Allison. And keep pushing the Docs til answers are found!
  5. And he was certainly known for a sharp tongue, and "biological happenstance" sounds like something he'd say. I know what you're saying, Evan, but the picture rings true for me.
  6. I don't care how great a musician he was, he sounds like he was a sorry excuse for a human being.
  7. It was in my Christmas pile but I still haven't had a chance to listen to any of them yet.

What this expression means? Is it a good thing to hit a nail on the head? Consider the alternative - missing the head of the nail and hitting your thumb. Then see this thread

Before you make this blanket statement, how familiar are you with ALL of his work, and not just the later era that was mined for that Best of Volume 2 CD? Have you heard the sessions collected in the Grant Green/Sonny Clark Mosaic set?
  10. I'm really surprised! I figured Dan might've gotten this one, seeing as he bought the next album from one of the tenor players! Guess I better listen to track 14 a few more times.
  11. I think the presumption has always been that you are at fault when hitting someone from the rear but from your description, I'd say you could refuse to settle and force them to sue, where you could bring up the true facts of the accident. As Chris mentions, she should have been cited. At minimum, she wasn't going the minimum of 40 mph in the travel lanes, and she failed to get out of the travel lanes. She's a freakin' moron!
  12. As far as Eager's playing in his "comeback," anyone hear Pete Minger's Spinnster date, Taking Sides? Minger, Phil Urso and Eager, with Eddie Higgins. Sounds pretty solid to me.
  13. That certainly brings back memories. RIP.

And I thought transcribing Bob Weinstock and his three teeth was a challenge!

  16. Very glad to see that the Sweets/Ben album has three unreleased alternates. I don't know if I can wait too long to grab this one ...
  17. So who the heck are you, Keys, making that announcement as your first post? B-) Welcome to the board, maybe you'll continue to share advance word with us?
  18. My attempt to go cold turkey lasted about as long as it took me to see a reference here for a Percy France live concert from 1980. Had no idea he had led a date, and so of course I had to track it down. Where's that damn shoulder-shrug smilie?
  19. Do you enjoy tenor player Scott Hamilton? He's used Bunch quite a bit, including his last on Concord, Heavy Juice which is very nice (with even younger throwback Harry Allen. If you like Scott, I'd check AMG for the albums they did together.
  20. Thanks for the report/photos, Mark. I'm really looking forward to the Fathead tribute to Ray CD-I've saved one of my Border's gift cards specifically for that one, which is out on January 11, I believe. If anyone should do a tribute to Ray, its Fathead. B-)
  21. Glad to know ya, Marty. Have a good one!
  22. That would be a screwed up thing to do. But that was never my point. MY point is, that is buyers are judged on whether they communicate well and pay promptly. That done, you *owe* them positive feedback. If they are dumb-asses who make excuses to leave negative feedback, then respond to it. If their negative feedback is ridiculous, other potential buyers will see it as such. Let me give you a hypothetical (not so hypothetical because its how I got my first bit of negative feedback): You sell an album; you don't take paypal and want a check or money order. Money order is mailed within two days of the auction ending. Its received less than a week after the auction ended. You take TWO weeks to ship the LP. I post negative feedback because the whole idea of sending a money order is to get the merchandise quickly. There's no excuse for taking that long, and I don't care how much business you do. What do you do? Do you post tit-for-tat negative feedback, when I have done nothing but alert the ebay community to pathetic customer service? Remember, there's nothing to be "made good" on here. You think its fine to accept a money order and not ship the item for two weeks. I think its total bullshit, and post negative feedback. What do you do?
  23. Do they say they hated the CD? Or do they make up lies about your service as a seller? Seems to me, if someone posts negative feedback like that, no one is going to give a shit about their negative statement because no one in their right mind regards it as legitimate. yeah, you get a (-1) in your "score", but so what? The fact remains that negative feedback can be responded to. That's all you need to do.
  24. Mizner Park Amphitheater. I just PM'd you.
  25. Since my mom wouldn't touch a computer, I bought a couple of antiques for her this holiday season and remarked to her that I had not yet received feedback from the sellers, despite the fact that I was exceptionally prompt in communicating with and paying them. Then, when I heard from my mother that the items were received and she was happy with them, I placed feedback. Immediately (as in, within 24 hours) I received positive feedback in return. This is BULLSHIT! It is obvious to me that those sellers were witholding feedback pending a positive report from me, when I had completed the terms of the transaction with great speed and efficiency. They are doing this for one reason only: Reserving the right to leave tit-for-tat negative feedback, had I been moved to leave negative feedback myself. IT IS CRAP and I hate sellers who do it. The fact is, my feedback rating would be unblemished if not for tit-for-tat negatives I got from sellers who had no right or reason to make the claims that they did. I understand that sellers want to be sure that buyers are satisfied, but be honest: If someone communicated speedily and paid immediately, what right do you have to leave negative feedback? Granted, a buyer who is not pleased should contact the seller first, as ebay tells you, but for me these are the issues: For sellers: Did the buyer communicate promptly? Did he pay promptly? If that is the case, and you believe in the products you sold, then you ought to leave positive feedback immediately. For buyers: Did the seller communicate quickly? Was his shipping price fair? Did he ship promptly? Was the item as described? Would you buy from him again? If the answers are positive, than positive feeedback should be given. period. And as far as witholding feedback goes pending positive feedback: its BULLSHIT and is totally wrong. The fact is, ebay gives you the opportunity to respond to negative feedback. Earned or not earned, that is the only way to respond to negative comments-by telling your side of the story. NOT in placing retaliatory negative feedback.
