Blindfold Test #13: Disc 1, the "official BFT"
Dan Gould replied to EKE BBB's topic in Blindfold Test
And what could it be, with guitar? Not what concerns me. I'm sure others have made IDs on that track, but I'm not one to go searching for the answers or puzzling things out. Not what I do the BFTs for, sorry! I try to identify leaders or tunes and leave it at that. -
Blindfold Test #13: Disc 1, the "official BFT"
Dan Gould replied to EKE BBB's topic in Blindfold Test
Sorry I'm later than usual (but then again, what few guesses I offer are usually crap anyway), I have to say this is one very fine BFT. Only #12 rated a DKDC, the rest were varied from really nice to at least listenable. #1-liked everything except the vocalist. #2-the blend on the opening made me think "west coast" but the solos weren't as mellow as I expected. #3-no guesses still, though I was thinking its definitely a '50s recording. #4-I'll say Clifford. #5-liked this a lot, sounds like JJ to me. Probably my favorite track overall. #6-not a big stride fan, so no clue. #7-a Miles wannabe. I hate to admit that I liked it, cause it was way too close for comfort. If Sangrey has problems with Eric Alexander for his taking from George Coleman, well, this guy's far worse, IMO. #8 - Really dug this a lot, Griiff? Jacquet? #9 - #14, no guesses, some I dug, some not so much Thanks again though for a fine comp.! -
Solo act: Navratilova, 47, wins at Wimbledon

That's a really hard choice, simply because Martina's greatest challenger, Chrissie, wasn't the athlete that the Williams sisters each are, and she didn't hit nearly as hard as the Williams do. The more interesting matchup might be Martina Hingis vs Martina, because Hingis' game was very much like Everet's. But I would have to say that at their best, both Williams probably beat Martina, but Martina would win her share too, because I think her attacking style would lead to errors and frustration. As interesting as it is to ponder that possibility, is to consider what game the Williams sisters would play, had they come up in the wood racquet era. They'd both be big hitters still, because that's what their Dad taught-but the lightness and power of today's racquets has a lot to do with the power of the women's game. -
Looking for Mastersounds vinyl

I think Sidewinder is a bit confused, but since he mentioned "Joe" I'm sure he's referring to Euclid Records in St. Louis, not the Groove or Jazz Record Mart. -

Joe Williams Worth Waiting For

It shows up on ebay regularly, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a CD reissue. -
Inspired by the health thread and the revelations contained therein, here's another nosy subject, complete with poll (hope I covered enough possibilities there). I'm kind of curious because right before I was married, a friend told me about the inevitable decline of physical contact, which he encapsulated this way: For the first year of your marriage, put a penny in a jar everytime you have sex. Thereafter, take a penny out of the jar each time you have sex. You'll never run out of pennies to remove from the first jar. I laughed at him, and when I told Sue, she laughed as well, but I have to say that the process of emptying the jar has taken far longer than we expected, and we haven't even had kids yet! So, gettin some? Gettin' any? And whatever your status, are you happy about it?

Or a moonlighting Captain?

Sorry... but no. You have two good years left. Enjoy them. After that, bit by bit, it all falls apart. You'll also get uglier. Go ahead, look in the mirror. Tomorrow you'll look worse. Anyone find that they're getting better looking as they age? Anyone? Show of hands? Didn't think so. ON THE EDIT: Birthday: 14 September 1965 -- Make that less than two years. I'm sorry. You mean I have no hope of looking like Sean Connery or John Forsyth?

Great news, David! -
38, and aside from the gut, quite healthy. Which is a good thing, cause I haven't seen a doctor in about 6 years. (In fact, its easy to date the time, as it related to my brother's bone marrow transplant-I had to have a full physical in order to be approved as the donor.) I was healthy as a horse then, and nothing's really changed, except for the weight, which, thankfully, Chuck will be reminding me about for as long as I'm here. But, like Peter, I am definitely beginning to feel that the peek is long passed, and its only a matter of time before something starts to go haywire. Of course, if I got rid of the weight, maybe I could keep that day from coming for a bit longer?

Is something going to happen after 1 year and four months? Is the world going to come to an end? The more I think about it, the less I think that serious "tightening" of the time between tests is really necessary. (though I do think that Nate, and also Marcus, should get their ducks in a row earlier than usual, simply because of shipping time, especially for Marcus from South America.)
-
1. I've already suggested that we move shipments up a bit, but this requires that signup threads start earlier, too. Such a schedule of shipments-you're assuming that people are all ready to start shipping almost immediately. Wait til its your turn, and you start obsessing over which tracks to include or their order. The compilation process can be time consuming, and at least people have time to work on them with the master list. 2. A poll of favorite tracks-no reason it can't or shouldn't be done. 3. Limitations to CD sources-absolutely not. It is a blindfold test regarding musicians and performances. And if you can't get the particular track, at least, considering the amount of music that has gone into print on CD, you can easily start finding music by the artist in question. In fact, we are not limited to LP or CD sources-private recordings are also fair game.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

Wow, not even couw went out on a limb like that and declared himself not a fan of either Miles OR Cannonball.

Who wouldn't trust their own ears? Heck, I'd trust your ears ahead of theirs almost any day of the week.

Oh Brother! Wonder where my mind was when I posted... Well, Silver's Sister Sadie has been known to be instrumental in finding salvation.

Its apples and oranges and there's absolutely no validity to the claim this person is making.

Except that its "Sister Salvation"

couw has hit it on the nose

PM sent; we'll see if it got there.

And yet that article that was posted from the Sunday times mentioned that Spielberg told Benny that he loved his work and his favorite tune was I Remember Clifford. Heck, assuming that was true, take an extra three minutes to establish that the Father's name was Clifford and he always loved the tune, Benny leads off the set with the tune, and Hanks sits at the table while a tear falls. He's remembering his Dad with his favorite tune, AND he's triumphed against adversity.

Well, for a wild card entrant, Martina couldn't dream of a better opponent-a South American clay court player who thinks grass is made for picnics. Against a legend, who's surprised she'd choke? Nevertheless, nice to see the old girl competing. Too bad the odds are huge against her having a tournament like 38 year old Jimmy Connors had at the Open in, what was it, '92? -
While I doubt wesbed's pitch would be green-lighted in a million years, I am disapointed in Jazzbo's description of Benny's scene. Killer Joe is a funky enough tune that it sounds like the least they could do is let him play more and show Hanks at a table, bopping his head. Or even looking bored while the rest of the crowd is popping its fingers. Something, anything, to show why his character's father might care about jazz or getting these autographs.
