What Would Like To Listen to While You Die?

Only if you belong to the Church of John Coltrane. -
There's something wrong with the sound of the Marcus Roberts solo discs?

I know that some participants have complained about new BFTs arriving too quickly, not having time to give them the proper attention. On the other hand, other would be compilers have noted that they may anticipate shipping sometime in the first Kerry Administration, at the earliest. Our current compiler, EKE, ended up shipping a bit early, and this makes me think: Since compilers know how close there turn is and therefore have plenty of time to think about their discs and get ready in advance, is there any terrible loss to soliciting addresses further in advance and shipping further in advance? While people may have more than one "new" BFT in hand, it would also give them more time to do their listening prior to the actual start of the discussion. If we understand that compilers ONLY start discussion threads, then I think we could keep things straight, while actually giving everyone more time to listen before discussions start, and also keep things moving so that we can move steadily through the list and people won't wait quite so long to get their shot. Thoughts?

Happy Father's Day to Organissimo Dads
Dan Gould replied to maren's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Do I count? My wife bought a Father's Day card for our "son," Coltrane, to give to his "Daddy". In case you've missed the pics before, here's one shortly after we adopted him. Its amazing how quick they grow up! -

I believe that if you want to receive payments, you need to give up the bank account number to get your $$. At least those transfers are still free.

I can't imagine why, for these purposes, your classmates wouldn't prefer Paypal payment if it were available. Unless, that is, its really your 50th Reunion, and you don't anticipate that anyone will know what the hell Paypal is anyway. And judging by our own Christiern, people in that age cohort are online, too ...

Now is this really true? I mean, did they have to draw a picture of a penis and a steaming pile of turd to convince the family that it would be best for the girl to change her name?

Teaching two jazz history classes next year
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'd be curious to know, too. After all, students who enroll in a Continuing Ed class have to be interested in the subject matter-its not like they're satisfying some requirement for a diploma or degree and will veg out in class. I'd expect a significant proportion of older students some of whom may even have memories of the era and things to share with the class. -
No problem. Will it be my left or my right kidney with that?

UNIVERSITY PREZ: 'C-WORD' CAN BE 'TERM OF
Dan Gould replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It has nothing to do with "patriarchy" and "male domination". What it is related to is what Jim touches on: Like it or not, men expect other men to act like men, and women to act like women. Therefore, ball-busting women are cunts. Effeminate men are pussies. Patriarchy or Mother Earth Goddess loving community, it would be the same thing. -
Good choice, Marcus! I'll have to try to pull this one out and actually participate. Might also be interesting if it turns into a discussion of young lions/recreation of the past ...

Well, all I can say is: The Terminal just became a far more interesting film worth my attention And There's hope yet for Concord Records, if they signed Benny!

Organissimo (dry) t-shirt contest
Dan Gould replied to Upright Bill's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I think Jim is reliving his youth, when Maidenform bra ads did what Victoria's Secret catalogs do now ... -
Definite vote for two separate threads.

This is an excellent idea.

Oh, I don't have any objection. But one could (and some do, with legitimacy) make the claim that the artist didn't intend for their music to be recorded in such a way and that the artist isn't profiting from it in any case. For example, didn't some of the "bootleg" Mingus albums/CDs that Sue is always trying to stifle originally come from European radio broadcasts? For that matter, is there really that much of a difference between taping a live jazz concert off the radio or covertly in a club? Many think the first one is okay, but would call the second one a bootleg. (In neither case am I referring to selling the recordings; just recordings made for personal use and/or trading.) It's not my intention to cast any stones - I too have "tapes" - but I find the moral/ethical arguments both for and against such things very interesting. Well, Ray, my rule of thumb is that generally, if the set was broadcast, the musicians knew about it, at minimum, and maybe got paid extra for it? The only way that objection works is if the broadcast was surrepticious. That, and actually putting out tapes for commercial sale, which is what Sue Mingus is trying to stop, I presume. That's a separate commercial use of an artist's work, and I understand the objection. But taping and trading among collectors-there ain't no way that there is an ethical objection to that.

Not much of a friend .... Seriously, why did you give it up? Guilt keeping you up nights? You're a better man than I, Gunga Din.

"Piracy," by strict definition, is an absolute no-no. I'm curious what people think about having, listening to, or trading live radio broadcasts... Ray, What would possibly be an objection to having, listening to, or trading live radio broadcasts? Only if money is changing hands should there be an ethical objection. In fact, I am currently working on transferring reel-to-reel tapes for a fellow board member, and there are some quite remarkable things he captured off the air years and years ago ... and no, you can't have them!

Considering that Ricci had a near-catastrophic failure and massive loss of data due to a failed backup system, it takes some chutzpah to talk about our supposed technological shortcomings. As Use says, they've got nice servers and a responsive tech guy. What else is needed? We were down for a time due to an act of God-the Michigan storms, and now again with a SQL error. BFD. If crashes become a common occurence, then I'd be all for a financial donation to upgrade. But it hardly seems necessary now.
