  1. It's criminally short, about 30 minutes, but really, really good. Rushing is in fine voice, as would be expected, and Brubeck fits with him very well. I'd grab it if I were you.
  2. Its worth it just for the Sweets/Buck Clayton date, which is quite superb.
  3. That's a very strange balance to me Time to invest in some essential albums. I was waiting for someone to point this out! But, strange to say, I have always preferred Brownie's descendants to Brownie himself (I think you know which Brownie I'm speaking of, Brownie! Not that I count Blanchard necessarily under that heading, but Lee, Byrd, Freddie ...) And trust me, there are a few Brown/Roach titles that are filed under Max
  4. I could actually see a good result on the JT tune. Maybe.
  5. Well now I see that something went wrong with my first update of the workweek, so this will have to be an extra long list: Clarence Gatemouth Brown: American Music, Texas Style Sings Louis Jordan (highly recommended Black and Blue CD) Charles Brown: Blues and Other Love Songs So Goes Love Clifford Brown: Sextet in Paris Quartet in Paris Memorial Album Mel Brown: Chicken Fat The Wizard Odel Brown and the Organ-izers; Raising the Roof Mellow Yellow Ducky Ray Brown: Hot Tracks After You've Gone (both co-led by Herb Ellis) Seven Steps to Heaven Don't Get Sassy Summertime Much in Common (with Milt Jackson) Live at Starbucks Producer's Choice Live at Scullers Some of My Best Friends are The Trumpet Players Some of My Best Friends are Guitarists Some of My Best Friends are the Sax Players Don't Forget the Blues Three Dimensional Red Hot Ray Brown Trio Soular Energy Summer Wind Black Orpheus Moore Makes Four Bam Bam Bam Private Recording of one of Ray's last gigs, at the Germany Jazz Festival Tom Browne: Another Shade of Browne (interesting straightahead date by a guy who's made his living in smooth jazz but says he's always loved Morgan, et. al.) Dave Brubeck: Blues Roots (with Gerry Mulligan) Brubeck and Rushing Jimmy Bruno: Live at Birdland I - with Bobby Watson Live at Birdland II - with Scott Hamilton Bobby Bryant: Ain't Doing too B-A-D, BAD Big Band Blues Paul Bryant Burnin' Groove Time Something's Happenin' (the last two are cool dates Fantasy should put out, with Plas Johnson and Gatemouth Brown among others) 255
  6. I can only imagine what Chris A. will have to say about this. Stefan, I didn't even know this was coming out-who else is on it and what are the tunes?
  7. You didn't know that Rudy's parents installed an orange spotlight in the living room?
  8. No more than people who scan the BFT discussion threads before posting their answers.
  9. The only shemale I've encountered was when I worked in a phone sex office (not talking dirty, mind you!) and one of the "girls" was this tall, pretty redhead. Yes, I'll admit it, she was pretty-but something was a bit off, and I quickly found out from one of my co-workers. But what I got a kick out of was her chosen female name: Fabia. Get it? The female version of Fabio ....
  10. I disagree-I thought this one was the least obvious dude: Oh, and I was 14/16, by the way.
  11. Speaking of Bobby Watson, and unless this is limited to CD titles and not song titles, how about the tune "Monk He See, Monk He Do"?
  12. Sorry, Marcus, I've just been terribly busy since you posted this. I'll try to refresh my memory over the weekend ...
  13. Looks that way from here, too.
  14. More nice stuff on this one, thanks, EKE! (though I could do without the tracks better left in the dustbin of history I gotta believe its Sweets on track 9. I kept thinking Hawk on track 2 but from everyone else I can see that's wrong, and I hate to admit it, but while everyone else seems to have no problem identifying Dizzy on his own tune, I thought it might be Miles.
  15. Don't listen to Nessa. In his world, anyone who doesn't follow the Nessa Definition of a Jazz Fan is worthless. Peter, if you like the BN Lighthouse material, this is more of the same, and very worthwhile.
  16. I'd say sorry I've offended you but I've ceased giving a shit about the likes of you. But you might note that no one's name is attached to the poll results. No one knows who placed themselves in what category, or if they did. That's the beauty of polls, both the legitimate and the online type.
  17. And what could it be, with guitar? Not what concerns me. I'm sure others have made IDs on that track, but I'm not one to go searching for the answers or puzzling things out. Not what I do the BFTs for, sorry! I try to identify leaders or tunes and leave it at that.
  18. Sorry I'm later than usual (but then again, what few guesses I offer are usually crap anyway), I have to say this is one very fine BFT. Only #12 rated a DKDC, the rest were varied from really nice to at least listenable. #1-liked everything except the vocalist. #2-the blend on the opening made me think "west coast" but the solos weren't as mellow as I expected. #3-no guesses still, though I was thinking its definitely a '50s recording. #4-I'll say Clifford. #5-liked this a lot, sounds like JJ to me. Probably my favorite track overall. #6-not a big stride fan, so no clue. #7-a Miles wannabe. I hate to admit that I liked it, cause it was way too close for comfort. If Sangrey has problems with Eric Alexander for his taking from George Coleman, well, this guy's far worse, IMO. #8 - Really dug this a lot, Griiff? Jacquet? #9 - #14, no guesses, some I dug, some not so much Thanks again though for a fine comp.!
  19. That's a really hard choice, simply because Martina's greatest challenger, Chrissie, wasn't the athlete that the Williams sisters each are, and she didn't hit nearly as hard as the Williams do. The more interesting matchup might be Martina Hingis vs Martina, because Hingis' game was very much like Everet's. But I would have to say that at their best, both Williams probably beat Martina, but Martina would win her share too, because I think her attacking style would lead to errors and frustration. As interesting as it is to ponder that possibility, is to consider what game the Williams sisters would play, had they come up in the wood racquet era. They'd both be big hitters still, because that's what their Dad taught-but the lightness and power of today's racquets has a lot to do with the power of the women's game.
  20. I think Sidewinder is a bit confused, but since he mentioned "Joe" I'm sure he's referring to Euclid Records in St. Louis, not the Groove or Jazz Record Mart.
  21. So, Jim, how much is up on the big board????
  22. It shows up on ebay regularly, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a CD reissue.
  23. Inspired by the health thread and the revelations contained therein, here's another nosy subject, complete with poll (hope I covered enough possibilities there). I'm kind of curious because right before I was married, a friend told me about the inevitable decline of physical contact, which he encapsulated this way: For the first year of your marriage, put a penny in a jar everytime you have sex. Thereafter, take a penny out of the jar each time you have sex. You'll never run out of pennies to remove from the first jar. I laughed at him, and when I told Sue, she laughed as well, but I have to say that the process of emptying the jar has taken far longer than we expected, and we haven't even had kids yet! So, gettin some? Gettin' any? And whatever your status, are you happy about it?
  24. Or a moonlighting Captain?
  25. Sorry... but no. You have two good years left. Enjoy them. After that, bit by bit, it all falls apart. You'll also get uglier. Go ahead, look in the mirror. Tomorrow you'll look worse. Anyone find that they're getting better looking as they age? Anyone? Show of hands? Didn't think so. ON THE EDIT: Birthday: 14 September 1965 -- Make that less than two years. I'm sorry. You mean I have no hope of looking like Sean Connery or John Forsyth?
