First thing on my list for many years now has been a Mosaic set. I'm strongly leaning towards the Gerald Wilson this year, especially since I heard less than stellar reports on the sound quality of the Stanley T. set.

Peter, You have my positive vibes and enormous respect that you've run marathons. My running is limited to mad dashes after fuzzy yellow balls Actually, though, I made an awesome "get" a couple of nights ago, coming from way behind the baseline to cover a drop shot and hit a winner-it was so surprising that my opponent (who played soccer professionally in Brazil) said, "man, how did you get to that ball? You surprise me sometimes, man!" Made my day. B) As I am sure completing the marathon will yours. Good luck!

Well, forty views, 10 voters, it looks like a statistically insignificant landslide. Barring a drastic change in fortune, this poll will come to an end Monday morning with a brand new selection method. Then the question will be, who starts the new "Sign up" thread? We can leave it to B3-er, or I can start it if you like. But first we'll let this go another day or so.

My pick is Michigan too, both for the home field and especially for the troubles OSU has on offense. They're already down 21 and with the offense performing as horribly as it has, I think you can stick a fork in 'em, even before the second half. Another dream shattered by Michigan. What else is new?

I wouldn't necessarily say that, Harold. It was more a straight reading of the melody that made me go "ugh, I used to dig that pseudo exotic thing, but damn, I think I've heard it too damn much!" and I didn't exactly listen to the solos, I was fighting the urge to cue up the next tune ... then came the return to the theme and I said, "yup, I've heard this sucker too many times" and then I started this thread.

I'd usually agree with you, maybe its that '"Caravan" has popped up too often lately, but when Jimmy Forrest's version from his Delmark album with Grant Green came up a little while ago, I kinda snapped and started this thread!
-
I may be blasphemous, but I'm going to nominate "Caravan."

Well, Moose, doncha know that LBJ and Bobby only hated each other after Jack was murdered??!! So, I mean, c'mon, its not that farfetched! GoM, since I'm sure you'll agree that the CIA is on the side of the warmongering, Oliver Stone conspiracists, yes, they're covered in that catch-all.

And speaking of altering event, take a look at this looney tunes "alternate history of the US, had Kennedy lived": This guy is so far off his nut its pathetic! I mean, he's got Colin Powell as VP BEFORE the Gulf War which is the only thing that made him a national figure.

You absolutely do not have a clue. Read Posner's book. The ability to shoot that rifle in the time allotted is unquestionable. Posner demonstrates over and over again the fact that the "extraordinary" number of dead witnesses A) carries no statistical significance and most importantly B. there were perfectly normal, "regular" causes of death Read the book. It demolishes every element of the "conspiracy".

Interesting idea, Chris, though it would mean I would have to finagle contact numbers for those people, and also put off Bob's interview, which is something I don't really want to do. When he left the message for me, he was somewhat difficult to understand, his voice sounded kind of weak. Fortunately, when I returned his call he definitely sounded better and stronger (I was afraid I'd need to keep a microphone right under his chin in order to be sure I caught every word!). So, I do think that an early January interview with Weinstock is a good idea-unfortunately doing anything other than getting ready for that will be tough. Aside from Red Holloway, Jackie Mac, who else is still around? I know I am missing a lot, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank, at least for the pre-soul jazz era Prestige.

This one's in the CD player in the car, and I just know that before I swap out those CDs, I'm gonna give it another listen, or three! Just terrific stuff, I love Red's vocal especially.

Well, now we know who voted for the Mafia I really recommend Posner's book. It does a remarkable job of establishing Oswald as the killer, the lone killer. The same way that it was fate that brought the motorcade under Oswald's window and gave him the opportunity to plan the assasination, I think fate also allowed Ruby to be in that garage, pistol at the ready. When he carried out his own murder, it provided so much fodder for mafia-conspiracists. I don't have any doubt that without Oswald's murder, the mob theory would crumble. The other factor of course, is the more innocent time. Nowadays, Oswald would have a flak jacket on for all public appearances.

I think it was in the Gryce book that Weinstock spoke of the fact that the label always made money and so he was willing to take risks on people like Gryce. I imagine that the biggest part of that was having those Miles albums in the catalog. I imagine they sold pretty steadily, especially while the Davis Quintet personnel was the same as the Columbia releases, and probably beyond. Same think with Monk.

eBay: Pet Foil Hat Technology
Dan Gould replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I don't know what's more amazing, that he put this up for sale or that it attracted 17 bids and nearly 21,000 page views! -
Brad, Thanks. AAJ is always a fallback position, though I am almost certain they don't pay anything; they do have the advantage of archiving their material and therefore having a much longer "shelf life" than a monthly print publication. That of course is assuming they don't crash again with no functional backup system.

Just found another Farmer/Soulnote CD that must be one of the earliest: Manhattan, with Keny Drew and Sahib Shihab. Copyright on the tray card says 1982, recording date says Novemer 29 and 30, 1981. Wonder if that recording was digital or just mastered to digital in 1982.
-
Thanks, I did not know that. Guess they'll be number two on the list.

Since the anniversary is upon us, what do you say? I was willing to entertain conspiracy notions til I read Posner's Case Closed which I feel not only destroyed the conspiracy theories but established beyond and to the exclusion of all reasonable doubt that Oswald did it, alone. Now I see there's another "new, blockbuster" book accusing LBJ-some guy who was a lawyer at LBJ's firm after the assasination. I saw the guy's website, and all I can say is, weak, very weak.

Thanks, Chuck and Big Al (and you too, Ubu, though I really like some of Al's questions!)

Yes, but still something noticeably different about Prestige, something to mention ...

One just occured to me as I looked at an OJC: "Supervision by Bob Weinstock" Why did he prefer "supervisor" to "producer"?

What are the most important jazz pieces
Dan Gould replied to Daniel A's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Once again, however, Bev is a guy. And I think you are both off your rockers. Read what Daniel says: "Important artists and recordings ... a first introduction to jazz in general." Going exclusively with current artists completely contradicts that. At most, something current might be added at the end, as a taste of where jazz is "now". But if she wants to know where jazz has been, there is much better advice already posted. -
What are the most important jazz pieces
Dan Gould replied to Daniel A's topic in Miscellaneous Music
If she wants to understand the music "intellectually" then why the concern for what music she'll like or reject? I think the best thing is to give her the widest variety possible-that Smithsonian things sounds perfect.
