HBJ, you tiebreaker needs to be divisible by five! -
I'm now reading the latest Dashiell Hammett collection, called Lost Stories. It includes a biography of Hammett which discusses where Hammett was in his life when he wrote each story.

Computer Gurus: Backup recommendation sought
GA Russell replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Great! Do all external HDs come with the backup software, or would I probably have to buy that separately? Yes, I'm using Windows XP. I have my OS discs somewhere, though I haven't seen them since my move in June. -
I am not currently backing up my computer, and I would like to change that. As I see it, I have two options. The first would be to subscribe to Carbonite for about $50 a year. The second would be to purchase a portable hard drive. I saw one on sale the other day for $69. Which do you recommend? Is it easy to transfer my entire hard drive onto a portable one occasionally?

It's that time of year again! It's time for the annual Grey Cup contest. (Past winners have included Noj (twice), brownie and Shane/indestructible.) Here are the rules: 1) Pick the winning team. 2) Pick the number of total points scored by both teams. (aka the tiebreaker) Since approximately half of us will pick the winning team, picking the total points is necessary to win the contest. Your total points prediction must be a number which is a multiple of five (5). The winning tiebreaker will be the one closest to the correct answer. If two are equally close, the winner will be the lower pick. If two people pick the same thing, the first to make the pick will be the winner. THE PRIZE: A $17.00 Mosaic Records Gift Certificate, good for both Mosaic and True Blue records. The $17.00 represents one CD of a Mosaic box set. Deadline: kickoff, Sunday Nov. 28, 6:00 pm eastern. ***** The Grey Cup game: The Grey Cup is awarded to the world champion of what I think is the greatest game in the world, Canadian rules football. That is to say, the champion of the Canadian Football League. This year's game will be a rematch of last year's, played by the Eastern champion Montreal Alouettes and the Western champion Saskatchewan Roughriders. The location of the game is chosen years in advance. This year's game will be played in the western city of Edmonton. You can expect that there will be many more Roughrider fans there than Als fans. Montreal is the defending Grey Cup champ, and was a better team than Sask this year, finishing first in the East with a 12-6 record. Saskatchewan finished second in the West with a 10-8 record. It is likely to be cold in Edmonton (the northernmost city with a team in the league), and the Riders proved that they could win in the sub-zero cold this past Sunday in the Western Final in Calgary. The game's kickoff will be at 6:00 pm eastern, so that time has been designated the deadline for this contest. You can listen to the game here: http://www.am770chqr.com/index.aspx (To listen to the game, you will need Windows Media Player which you can download for free. So you might want to plan ahead if you don't already have it.) You can study the season as it has developed with the CFL thread, which I will be updating during the course of this week. For the first preview of the game, see the comments by the knowledgeable David Naylor here: http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=342370 Good luck! Here's my pick (same as last year): Montreal, 50 points

Eastern Final: Montreal Alouettes 48....Toronto Argonauts 17 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W906.htm The game was played in Olympic Stadium, and 58,000 showed up. As expected, the Argos were never in it. What was a surprise was the ease with which the Als were able to move the ball against the Argos defense, which was ranked first in the league. ***** Western Final: Saskatchewan Roughriders 20....Calgary Stampeders 16 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W907.htm Once again this year, the home team in the Western Final failed to win. At kickoff, the wind chill was -24C, which I think is -12F. By the fourth quarter the snow was coming down fairly heavily. As a result of the weather, it was not a error-free game. The Riders just put together more good drives.

Bev, I remember that Bley had an album out on Limelight ca. 1968 with electric keyboards called Mr. Joy. Is that the album you are referring to? I enjoyed it then, but it's been 44 years since I've heard it, and I don't remember enough to intelligently discuss it. If not, what are you referring to? Here's a thread that discusses the Scorpio cd reissue: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=12589&st=0&p=214168&hl=Bley&fromsearch=1&#entry214168

TTK, that sounds like the cd I have, except that I got mine about 1990. I think that in the mid-60s Time Magazine had a staffer who was a fan of the Double Six and the Swingle Singers, because I seem to recall reading references to them more than once. I wish that more of the Double Six's work was available on cd. They were not only great, they had a unique sound as well. Isn't it interesting that Mimi Perrin was a success (in her own way) in two unrelated fields! RIP. By the way, can a francophone here explain the translation of the term Double Six, and why the group was called that?

Album Covers showing women with big hats!

The name Peggy King rings a bell. I think she was a regular on a radio show. Maybe...Stan Freeburg's? ***** OK, I've found this on Wikipedia. It doesn't mention Stan Freeburg, but his show is why I think I know her. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peggy_King -
The website I referred to is mobileread.com. 85 of the 97 responders said "introvert". I wonder if introverts are likely to spend more time on the web. http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106515

This question/poll was asked on another forum I'm a member of, and I was very surprised by the response (which I won't reveal at this time for fear of spoiling this poll). Your vote will not be public, so don't worry about revealing a secret. I'll be interested to see how the percentages break down here.

Toronto Argonauts 16....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 13 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W904.htm Was this a great defensive struggle? Actually, I think it was two offenses who both had bad games on the same day. I was kind of rooting for the Ticats, because I think they had a slim chance of beating the Als next week. I don't think that the Argos have any chance at all, barring injury. ***** Saskatchewan Roughriders 41....British Columbia Lions 38 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W905.htm What a game! The Riders scored 20 points in the second half to take the lead, but the Lions scored a TD on the last play of regulation to tie it at 27. The Riders won it in double overtime. I was rooting for the Lions, because they have been on a roll, and I think that they could have upset the Stampeders next week. The Riders have been in a slump, and considering how poorly their offense played in the first half today, I don't think they are going to beat Calgary.
