grooveshark: Cal Tjader - The Prophet

RIP. I liked his work. Maybe he was older than most who first hit the big time, but until I saw a photo a couple of years ago, I imagined that he was much younger than he was.

Two years ago Werner put out an album with Roseanna Vitro, Randy Brecker, James Carter, John Patitucci and others called Serve or Suffer, calling the band the Delirium Blues Project. I continue to enjoy it. It reminds me of Blood, Sweat and Tears at their best, with a female vocalist. I haven't seen anything by Werner since, and I would like to. Maybe lala or grooveshark have something.

I've spent the evening at grooveshark. My earlier problem was apparently because of a defective file. Grooveshark has a much smaller playlist than lala when it comes to jazz, but I feel that the audio sounds much better.

I have found what appears to be a similar site called grooveshark.com. It is ad supported, but I think you can listen to streaming for free. I have been able to start a playlist, but I haven't figured out how to get the playlist to play. I'll keep working on it.

Happy Birthday 2010 Joe! Today I'll put on Groovadelphia in your honor.

I have a couple of thoughts. The first is that there doesn't seem to be a jazz scene in New York like there used to be. I could be wrong about that, but I remember reading, I think in Art Pepper's autobiography, that in the late 50s in all of America there were only 400 jazz musicians good enough to record, and they all knew each other. I get the impression that that is not true today. My second thought is that if someone comes along who is popular, the music won't be called "jazz" by the public. This was proved to me ten years ago when the neo-swing bands were briefly fashionable. Their cd's were found in the rock section rather than the jazz section of record stores.
