  1. Jim, I think the missus would look better than Christina in that pic if she were dolled up the same way!
  2. Happy New Year everyone!
  3. Thanks Lon! I'm in the short story mode now, so I'll start with one of those collections.
  4. Lon, I've never read any PKD. Is there a collection you can recommend? Is the story the film is based on also called Paycheck?
  5. Wow! Thanks Street Singer!
  6. Could someone please print out the entire list of jazz clearance CDs? With my membership, I don't have access to it anymore. More important than the price, I think, is the heads up that they will soon stop carrying those titles. So if you want them from BMG, it's speak now or forever hold your peace.
  7. In regard to background music, you might be interested to learn that I saw him in San Francisco at El Matador in August of '73. We got there early, and got a front row table. A beautiful blond sat down at the table next to mine by herself. Between sets, Vince sat between her and me! She was his date. Nice guy. He was happy to chat with me, although I didn't have much to say. Anyway, the audience was perfectly quiet throughout both sets. Everyone listened to the music.
  8. Thanks for the heads up! It's always great to see items coming from the Pacific Jazz vaults.
  9. Merry Christmas everyone! Thank you Jim for providing this board. I learn something about jazz every day here.
  10. My mother took ill this year, so I am spending three days with her in Baltimore. Tell your parents you love them before it's too late!
  11. Not to be contrary, but I much prefer his work on Prestige. And there, his first albums were the best. 1) Soul Message was my first hard core jazz album. I haven't tired of it after 37 years. It's great to listen to on the highway. 2) Living Soul has been reissued with Spicy under the title Spicy. Living Soul is terrific, especially on Gemini. Spicy isn't worth the money, but there it is. 3) On Basie's Bandstand is a new release of the Living Soul set's previously unreleased recordings. I understand why the tracks that were chosen to be released on Living Soul were chosen, but these tracks are also very good. 4) Misty has a different style, unique to Groove as far as I know. All of these four are highly recommended.
  12. I remember Almost Good, the flip side of The Chipmonk Song! The Chipmonk's follow-up record was called Alvin's Harmonica, and the flip was another instrumental called Mediocre! It was. De dump dah dah dah dah dah De dump dah dah dah dah dah De dump dah dah dah dah dah De dah dah dah..."I don't know..."
  13. I bought my aunt in Boston a radio and AM antenna for Christmas three years ago. She likes to listen to late night talk shows. Here's a list of antennas to get you started: http://www.ccrane.com/search_result.asp Here's what I got her: http://www.ccrane.com/select_a_tenna_regular.asp
  14. Even this? Sure! Want to play frisbee golf?
  15. I have no first-hand experience. I read last week that the major difference between the two services is that most of XM's talk show hosts are conservative, and most of Sirius's are liberal. Sirius has a channel affiliated with Radio Spirits that plays only old radio shows from the 40s and 50s. XM is less expensive, but more of its channels have commercials.
  16. Thanks for the tip! Anything's worth a buck.
  17. Happy Birthday John!
  18. What a great album! It was my first Getz. I got it for free when I renewed my subscription to Downbeat, circa November, 1968. It introduced me to Chick Corea, and I think it is still one of Chick's best efforts.
  19. I've never been fond of the Mingus Candid set. It just leaves me cold.
  20. Paul Desmond. I still play every disc a great deal, so I doubt I'll ever get tired of any of it. It's great to relax by or to drive on the highway by.
  21. I'm with Lon on this. I can only listen to a little bit at a time. Monday I got in the mail to review the new VV secretly recorded Getting Sentimental from '78. I'll open it up in the next few days when I have a chance to listen.
  22. Street Singer, I reviewed Cuban Fantasy for AAJ. I recommend it. I recommend every Cal Tjader record I've heard! Lots of rhythm, not much melody. Think of a jazz band playing a frat party.
  23. Sounds good to me, Jim!
  24. "7. Am I the only one who has trouble matching Monk's tunes with their names? With a handful of exceptions, I know the tunes but I'll be damned if I can remember if a given composition is "Green Chimneys," "Ba-lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are," "Shuffle Boil," "Gallop's Gallop," or one of the dozens of others. " I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one!
  25. Thanks for that, Chris.
