Dyes (in food, cosmetics, etc)
GregK replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My daughter was recently diagnosed with an allergy to a dye used to make things look reddish or purple. It's called carmine, comes from a protein found in the skin of an insect, and does not have to be clearly labeled on food packaging until 2011 as such. Right now it shows up on labels as either carmine if we're lucky or "natural color", so if something is red/purple or even blue and does not come from non-animal sources (like Pop-Tarts), we avoid it. She can go into anaphylactic shock from this dye. You absolutely have to take any unknown reactions very seriously as they can be the first signs of something extremely dangerous. -
am I the only one who has not read that book?

Leno / O'Brien / Kimmel / Letterman
GregK replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
for me the Tonight Show ended when Carson quit. the only late night that remotely interests me is Letterman's monologue or the Daily Show (before Stewart starts kissing his guest's ass). Conan has never been funny; I just don't get his appeal at all. -
A Cold Dark Matter, on your b-day, from FZ! (that's what I'm currently listening to.)

why do they release 911 calls?
GregK replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
seriously, though, why do we need to hear these calls? I've never understood it either. -

I had to re-read the passage about circular breathing in the discussion of Composition 247 at least three times to make sure he meant that Kenny G. -

Brilliant Christmas Gift Ideas for Wives
GregK replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
my wife always wants some smelly perfumy or shampoo, soap thing that I can never find. I tried asking my 6 year old daughter this weekend which one it was that mommy wanted but she couldn't remember. As soon my daughter is old enough, my wife will finally get the gifts that she has been wanting all these years. -

Here's an article about Blue Rodeo's halftime performance. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Gre...978171-sun.html Thanks. I was going to try to watch it this year, but the game wasn't on CBC. When did they stop showing it?

I have more of the recent (i.e., issued during the 00 decade) than the older ECMs; I probably listen to the following the most: Keith Jarrett Personal Mountains, Always Let Me Go, The Out of Towners, Blue Note box, My Song, Belonging Arild Andersen Live at Belleville, rarum Ralph Towner Solstice Ketil Bjornstad/Terje Rypdal Life in Leipzig Circle Paris Concert Art Ensemble of Chicago rarum, Full Force Marcin Wasilewski trio January Nik Bartsch Stoa, Holon Enrico Rava New York Days Paul Motian Garden of Eden Jon Hassell Last Night the Moon..... Carla Bley Lost Chords find Paolo Fresu Misha Alperin Her First Dance Jimmy Giuffre 3, 1961 Charles Lloyd Rabo de Nube Miroslav Vitous Remembering Weather Report Marc Johnson Shades of Jade I'd like to get more of the older material, so I'll be picking up as many of the Old and New Masters box sets as I can

And not too long after that will be the usual complaints about Jarrett.

According to the John Coltrane Reference, it happened Sun, Jan 22, 8pm. All seats reserved, $3/$4/$5/$6 (Detroit Free Press advertisement, Jan 17, 1967, p 6-C). Coltrane sat in, then Alice replaced Monk. The commentary states that Wein's memory was off, as he said the concert was in Feb 1966, and there is no record of any concert in Detroit that month with Coltrane, and further, it was unlikely that a snowstorm was the reason for Coltrane's band to miss the show. The weather was unusually mild that weekend, with temps in the 50s; it's possible that thick fog resulting from the warm air chilling over the cold snow covered ground (according to the Free Press, Mon, Jan 23, 1967, p 9-D). No mention of any audio from the concert.

I have the HTC Fuze, which is a pretty amazing device, but now seems a little outdated even though it came out just a year ago. It has Windows Mobile 6.1, which, unfortunately, is slow and buggy. I intend to try an Android next. I couldn't imagine not having one of these little minicomputers (the phone part seems almost an afterthought) with me everywhere now. It's great being able to email and check anything on the internet wherever I am. -
Leave me out of "we all". Definitely did not like that show.

Happy birthday!

Hard Rain is one of my favorites. Right up there with Blood on the Tracks, Planet Waves, New Morning, Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft. The Bootleg volume you mention is great except for the Joan Baez intrusions. I have to skip the songs with her every time.

That's another one I haven't heard yet. I found it at lala.com: http://www.lala.com/#album/432627039264010...ne_In_The_Water Since you recommend it, I'll plan to listen to it this week. Why all the lala plugs?

Quarter (Moscow) 2008 - Yes! Is Eight Compositions with Peter Niklas Wilson? Haven't heard that one. Yes, that's the one. Alright, that's two recommendations for Moscow, so, my Borders gift card will go to that!

Are these recommended? Quartet (Moscow) 2008 Eight Compositions (Music and Arts, duets with a bassist whose name I forget)
