good for Herbie (it's a good album, so I don't think it won purely on nostalgia or conservative voting), I don't care about any of the rest of them. That Winehouse chick is pretty dreadful though
Surprisingly, I don't hate the Jone tribute album. I was expecting to, with Norah Jones, Tina Turner, and the ghastly Lenny Cohen warbling on it, but the music, particularly the instrumentals, are very good. Classic Herbie, in spots.
I'm glad I bought this Coltrane book, despite the price (I didn't answer my wife when she asked me how much it cost!). I can't imagine what size a similar TOME on Miles Davis or Duke Ellington would be.
well, I couldn't resist. I got it from amazon.ca for about $95 plus shipping. This has to be the most detailed, obsessive and just information-packed book I have ever seen devoted to one person. There is a ton of info in it, and it is huge, over 800 pages. A full discography, timeline and chronology, interspersed with period reviews, concert notices and newspaper articles (amazing how many misspelling of Coltrane there were!). I even caught Ed Rhodes mentioned by name somewhere in the chronology.
I just can't pay $150 for a book. I thought I stopped doing that once I graduated college.
Although, it looks like it can be had for $94 (Canadian) from amazon.ca: http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/0415...m/directextb-20
Not even 2 hours, this time. Usual suspects, of course. Perhaps anytime someone starts a Jarrett thread they should be obliged to start a second, Jarrett-bashing thread at the same time, so Chuck, Clem, etc can pile on with their same old complaints so the rest of us can just read the thread?
I've been checking out ECM big time for the past few months: Jarrett, Garbarek, Abercrombie, Holland, Stanko, Lloyd, a few others. I've become a pretty big fan of the label in general.
I've also been checking out ECM lately; I got the two :rarum sets, which helped a lot. Still can't take too much Garbarek after the early 80s though. And I have tried and failed to find much to like from recent Stanko or Tord Gustavsen
I pretty much feel the same way, except that I found myself in this particular store frequently - at least 2 or 3 times a month if not more. It's in the same mall as some stores that my wife frequents and I would kill time in the Borders - consequently (with the various coupons) I would do a fair amount of impulse buying. Now I'll just grab one of those seats in the mall and dig my ipod.
At any rate I'm glad that the whole chain isn't going - There's a couple of others in my area that I occasionally go to and I also make it a stop when I'm in Alexandria, Va. or Bangor, Maine, Two places I find myself in now and again.
Thanks Berigan and T.D. for those links.
Doesn't that Bangor Borders have a picture of the staff at the original Borders store on the wall of the stairway?
