  1. Yep, Petty was great until he ran into Jeff Lynne, then great once he lost him again. She's the One is a good album. Full Moon Fever and The Great Wide Open have good songs but horrible, dated production. I can't even listen to those albums now. Echo is still his best record, to me.

    Anthony Braxton

Any opinions on Composition 98 on HatART?
  3. I've always enjoyed the earlier episodes- I think once Larry David left it became silly, unbelievable, formulaic. But the early years were great. I also wish they never dropped Jerry's stand-up intros and outros. It was nice how they tied into the episode's story.
  4. Dave Holland, Sam Rivers, Anthony Braxton and Barry Altschul

    Spyro Gyra

I will say this: as far as I can tell, from what little I've heard of them (enough to make me know that I don't want to hear any more), S. Gyra are smooth jazz.
  6. I've never understood how humming along is a problem. It always puzzles me when people complain about Keith Jarrett. It's part of the music. What's the problem?
  7. I'll take both, either, whatever, just a change from the standards trio. I really, thoroughly enjoy the trio very much and always buy the latest release the day it's out, but change is always good. Just to hear what either 70s quartet would come up with 25-30 years on would be fascinating

    I hate smooth jazz
  9. I'll take Motian's playing anyday. Exactly the type of player that is always interesting
  10. 1,069,332 on vinyl 6,024 on 8-track 324,098 on cassette 645,764 on CD 10,898 on SACD That's it?? Wow. Depressing. I account for 3 of those. Hey wait, what about DualDisc?
  11. Absolutely essential. I love this set, second only to the Village Vanguard recordings, for me. Lots of repetition of titles, but of course never the same way twice! Plus there are versions of Afro-Blue, Blue Trane, and Mr PC. The sound is uneven and there are discographical errors in the booklet (detailed on David Wild's site), but the quality of the playing is worth it. Wonderful music from the early 60s period of Coltrane's quartet- if only there were more live releases from this period!
  12. Didn't People in Sorrow originally come out on Nessa? So wouldn't you have the tapes anyway? Or are you just talking about "Sophie"?
  13. how do you lose something like that??
  14. This is the edition I have. Mine came with a booklet, and is comprised of Les Stances a Sophie (with Fontella Bass and Don Moye), paired with People in Sorrow. And, it is excellent. All of it.
  15. Are all Hatology CDs limited? I think I will order this one now anyway
  16. Does this have anything that is also on the Holy Ghost box set?
  17. It is threads like this one that caused me to sharply reduce my time at AAJ. There seems to be a weekly, sometimes daily thread about someone's top 10 or top 5 (why is it always "top anything"? why must people have lists for everything??) or favorite whatever. No disrespect, but I honestly don't care what someone else's top anything is
  18. Ever hear of a guy named John Coltrane? He's my pick
  19. why does such a pointless thread manage to live for so long??
  20. Perfect timing for a co-worker. He came in to work Monday with one of those artery-buster Burger King breakfast sandwiches, the one that has been in the news lately. He ate this thing in about a minute (without breathing) and then said he ate healthy all weekend so he deserved this monstrosity!! I asked him what "healthy" meant and he said McDonald's breakfast!!!
  21. Finally!! To the Doritos!!!
  22. i've ordered nothing from BMG since yourmusic started- the lack of shipping charges makes such a big difference. But the selection, including new arrivals, seems to be identical (others have disputed that here, but I don't see any difference)
