  1. yes indeed you have to check Ann Arbor out. Although forget about owning a home, unless you're mega-rich. But the music scene is great. I've seen Organissimo twice, not to mention Shorter twice, Hancock twice, Keith Jarrett, Ornette Coleman, plus many others that I couldn't go to. Definitely check it out!
  2. I wish I could make it to this one.......
  3. I am not eligible to vote in this country. However, I say bring back that greatest of all Canadian beers, in the green bottle, Moosehead!!
  4. so does Sept 6 mean this year, or maybe something like April 2007? You never know with Sony
  5. Nope. Add another to that list. For me, Pink Floyd stops being interesting after Animals.
  6. I didn't even realize Hancock WAS the director!! Looks like Wayne Shorter's quartet will be appearing on the DSO's jazz series this year. http://www.freep.com/entertainment/music/dso17e_20050317.htm
  7. At least it's something different this time. I was excited when he mentioned in the liner notes to Inside Out that he would be releasing more of the same stuff in the future- I didn't know he meant only ONE more release!!

    Free America

Each one I have has french notes followed on the next page by English notes. Since I haven't read or spoken french since the late 80s, I can't say at first glance if the english notes are the direct translation or are a different set.
  9. I have no idea what any of this is about, so I think I will just go listen to some of the new Free America discs I got today on kind recommendation from Chuck, and check back later for some more advice. Good luck kids!
  10. I wish I could have gone. Some things just have to be missed...

I got Phase One (#1292), Certain Blacks (#2796), Braxton's Saxophone Improvs (#1481) and Donna Lee (#847), all at Borders. So far I'm really liking what I hear!!
  12. the newly reissued Phase One on Free America should be added to the recommendation list too. They hit a deep groove on the first tune and never let up
  13. why is he selling it now?

Chuck, what do you think of the Art Ensemble discs in this series? I think I will skip the With Fontella Bass one, but the other two look interesting

I picked up the Braxton Donna Lee today at Borders for $18.99. It's fantastic!!! One of my local Borders seemed to have them all- I was there around 1 pm and I had to ask the guy at the info desk to find it for me, since they weren't put on the shelves yet, and so he directed me to the new releases bin and we searched through them until we found the Donna Lee. It was under the Alan Shorter and Certain Blacks, which were all under and beside what looked like piles of these! I didn't realize they were so limited, or I would have gotten more with that buy 3 get 4th free deal they have. Guess I'll be going back to Borders this weekend!! I intend to pick up the Shorter and 2 Art Ensemble discs, Certain Blacks and Phase One

    Anthony Braxton

Today I bought the newly reissued Donna Lee. Very good!!!. I think I will go back to Borders in a few days and get the Saxophone Improvisations double disc.
  17. Well, since I know nothing about him outside of his Coltrane work, I think I will order this book.
  18. I think Bruce has been so careful in what he releases (up until the 90s) that he never released anything not at least excellent. Tunnel Of Love is just generally assumed as one of his best, like all the others until Human Touch/Lucky Town. It certianly has some of his best songs. Such a departure from Born in the USA though- I'm sure he whittled away some of the fans with it (probably part of his intention). I'd like to hear it with different production. And the outtakes are great- the song for his mother makes my wife cry every time she hears it. There's gotta be some other outtakes from this record. Divorce (or at least marital troubles) and Republican administrations always make for the best music!
  19. yep, same one. I've always wondered how it "earned" that chip off the top of it, close to where his right arm goes. Never heard anything about that. He's got a great tone though. The performance he did on SNL in 92 on 57 channels and Living Proof was an eye opener- I'd never heard him lay down such distortion before. Fit right in to the grunge movement of the time, only with so much more to say (who else was singing about their children crying?)
  20. the guitar he played on that Darkness tour---if he wasn't such a good songwriter or showman, he may have had a great career as just a guitar player. He's no Hendrix or anyone like that, but very talented for the material he concentrated on. Check out Prove it All Night and Promised Land from those 78 shows. Incredible. Most people don't know how good of a guitar player he is.
  21. Leave out Human Touch and he's had a pretty consistently excellent recorded career. The Rising is the strongest thing he's done since Nebraska-would have been better without Mary's Place. I'm really looking forward to his new one, Devils and Dust, in April. Supposedly it's a little more country-ish, without the full band on any song. What we really need from Bruce is some vintage live shows to be released-like from the Darkness tour (actually, anything from the 70s)
  22. Bob Thiele Bob Golden What a Wonderful World: A Lifetime of Recordings Oxford Univ Pr (T) null 01 May, 1995 ISBN: 0195086295 I found it on www.abebooks.com for $1.03 (!!), used. I will get it for that price, but I'm wondering how his career can be squeezed in to 168 pages.
  23. that's almost as unbelieveable as when Neil Young played with them!
  24. Has anyone here read this? It's called What a Wonderful World. It seems very short for someone who was involved in so much (only 168 pages!). Is there much mention of Coltrane in this book?
  25. yeah, I guess so. I didn't know I, or anyone else, had to like everything!
