damn, this sucks. I'd much, much rather have the CDs than a DVD. I watch a DVD once then I'm done with it

I meant to add earlier that the music is very good on this set-much better than I expected (I hadn't heard any of these titles before other than Time Out, of course). I particularly like Time In. I was expecting a more laid back set of records but they really are better than that. Well worth it

I too love this period of the Byrds. I feel this era has been unfairly neglected by most. Clarence White alone is worth listening to, but some of the songs are great too. However, Untitled is the best of this lineup, so you only go down from there. Ballad of Easy Rider is almost as good (it's only fault to me is that it is too short), and I really enjoy Dr Byrds and Mr Hyde in places. The two that came after are worth hearing but they suffer gravely from the unfortunate decision at the time to allow Skip Battin to contribute some songs. His songs are some of the absolute worst, hokiest crap I have ever heard. The Byrds doing novelty, with reference to Fatty Arbuckle!! McGuinn's and Parsons and White's songs are all good though, so if you can find Byrdmaniax and Farther Along for a low price I'd recommend getting them. Just skip the novelties!

Sorry, I checked the 2-disc comp is called Flying High

what's this have to do with music?

Which Gene Clark should I get? A local shop has the one called Echoes (the green cover), for $9.99, and very expensive import (I forget the name, but it's a brown cover, I believe it is a compilation, 2 discs), for $35.99, and they also have White Light. Any suggestions? I'm buying one tomorrow, I just can't decide which

LEAST favorite Miles Columbia box set???
GregK replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm not voting because I don't understand this poll-why vote for something you don't like? Anyway, I must be in the minority here- I really like the Bitches Brew set, in particular the packaging. One of my all-time favorites in terms of music and packaging. Just a great overall set -
I got it but am not thrilled by the packaging. I was hoping they would produce it like those Miles sets, but instead it is just a harbound slipcase holding each individual CD, which will probably be reissued separately in identical form (my guess). So there's not much to speak of in terms of liner notes, as each disc has it's own set, and only Time Out has anything beyond a paragraph or two added to the original ones. Good price though

Unfortunately my FYE store was all out. They didn't have any flyers advertising the price either. If anyone has a copy of the flyer and can scan it and post it here that would be highly appreciated. Don't know if Best Buy would take a printout of the flyer but it is worth a try...... I directed a coworker to fye to finish his collection too, and i told him to hurry because it looks like they have limited stock, but he reported back that he went past the display of them at the front of the store and instead went to the back, and saw PILES of seasons 2 and 3 (he wasnt looking for season 1) in one of those cabinets under the display racks. maybe your local one has the same situation? I'm thinking the complete seasons 1, 2 and 3 might make a kick-ass Christmas gift for my brother this year....cant beat the price!!!
-
Thank you for telling me about this. You saved me at least $25 (sorry, you aint getting it!). I was about to go to bestbuy last night and buy season 3 and 4 together (they give you 10% off for buying 2), but I decided to wait until today-good thing I checked in here first!! I got season 3 at fye, a store I usually try to avoid because of their typically high prices and their tendency to BLAST rap whenever I am in the store, then went to best buy and season 4 for $30

Gabbo!!!! The funniest ever episode is the last one in season 4!!! Krusty's comeback special! But I think season 3 might be better. The swear jar!!!

How did this thread turn into a Byrds vs. anyone else from the 60s debate? Anyway, back to the Byrds: Fifth Dimension is their absolute classic, especially the remaster, as it adds fascinating alternate takes of 8 miles high (with cleaner, less distortion on the guitar but also simpler drumming) , Why, and particularly a much faster, looser, even jazzier version of John Riley. Beginning to end this is their strongest album(although I still find myself returning to Easy Rider more often than any other)-8 miles high still, after 40 years, sounds fresh and original; why didn't McGuinn play more of that great guitar as the years went by? I also like Crosby's best Byrds tune, What's Happening, and one of the bonus tunes is another great Crosby one, Psychodrama City, with some fantastic melodic bass.

hot (upper 80s), humid and under the ol' tornado watch all weekend! had some bad-ass T-storms last week, accompanied by a tornado warning which was serious enough to force everyone at work to the shelter!

I'm pretty impressed with the treatment of both Byrds and Who catalogs. The reissues have great sound, interesting outtakes and liner notes and are pretty low-priced (I finished my Byrds catalog for $11.99 each)

I've been on somewhat of a Chick Corea tear the last few months-I'm really enjoying his most recent trio record, Past, Present and Futures, and his most recent Origin record, Change. Both are more exciting than the live at the Bluenote double disc tribute (the hybrid SACD, sorry I can't remember the name right now!)

Guinnevere was actually a CSN tune written and recorded a year or two after crosby was kicked out of the Byrds

I just finished my Byrds collection by picking up Dr Byrds and Mr Hyde (very underrated! Great album), Younger than Yesterday (who let Crosby do Mind Gardens??? wow!! Or CTA, what were they thinking?) and 5D. I have some good listening ahead of me this weekend as I reacquaint myself with all of this music. I have them all in that ltd edition box that came out 4 years ago and I intend to work my way through all of their albums, beginning to end. I still hold Easy Rider as my favorite, with Untitled next. We'll see if that changes after listening to the whole catalog in sequence!

I don't know, did France have Coca-Cola yet? Or pin-ups?

I agree with you Chris. I am guilty of listening to a very narrow slice of jazz, but that is more to do with my severely limited time for listening than anything else. If I just didn't have to sleep or work, I just might be able to sneek a few hours away from "family time" to listen to more music. That's one of the reasons I come to this forum when I have a few mintues here and there-to check out new releases, recommendations, etc., hoping for some directions to take my listening to next. -
I used a different variation on my name at my house and no workie, i'll try again later, it might have been i was just too tired to do it properly at 8 in the morning. I've done this twice in the last 5 months, once using the same name I was currently enrolled under, only as initials, and then again under my wife's name. No problem. I got the CDs within 10 days

...and yet you continue to bring up politics in other forums, in violation of our "unwritten agreement" here. Typical. no. The question was "what have you learned?". and that's one of the things I've learned. Deal with it. -

Since when does someone's death put a cap on telling the truth about them? I have a feeling that the reason why you are so opposed to political threads is that they generally go against your own viewpoints. how does saying "good riddance" tell a truth about someone? Show some respect is all I'm getting at. Chris, you are not always right. -

I've learned that a jazz discussion board has no place for political discussion-witness the disrespectful crap being spouted by johnny e about Reagan today.
