What live music are you going to see tonight?
PHILLYQ replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
On Friday the 13th I got very lucky musically. I went to see Dr. John at the Brooklyn Academy of Music(BAM)and caught a verrrrry funky night of Nawlins music. As guests, the good doctor had Irma Thomas, Donald Harrison,Nicholas Payton,Dirty Dozen Brass band, Ivan Neville and maybe a couple other folks I can't remember. All the guests did a few tunes each with the good doctor, and the evening started out on a high note(When the lights went down I was looking at the stage from my balcony seat, and then I saw everyone looking at the main aisle in the orchestra section.Well, here comes Dr. john leading the march up the aisle with the Dirty Doxen Brass Band playing- magical!)and stayed there all night. Some highlights among many were Dr. John & Nicholas Payton doing a duet, the opening tune, with no bassist but TWO bari saxes(Ronnie Cuber + the guy from Dirty Dozen) and a sousaphone, Irma Thomas doing 'You can have my husband but leave my man alone' and many others. A GREAT night of music in my beloved Brooklyn. -
Yanks 0-3, Mets 3-0, but it's early...

How many live jazz shows have you seen in your life?
PHILLYQ replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
That was the year I started going to the Fillmore, but unfortunately didn't get to that one. If I remember correctly you're about the same age as me (I'm 56) and grew up in Brooklyn, maybe even in or close to Midwood? I'll be 56 in June and I grew up in Flatbush, I lived on Flatbush Avenue near Avenue D/Ditmas Avenue(depending on what side of the street you were on). IIRC, you were near Coney island Avenue? -
I listened to most of 'The Whimbler' yesterday and enjoyed it, good group interplay.

March 30th I caught Falu at the Rubin Museum in Manhattan. Interesting place, a museum devoted to Himalayan art. They had a lounge with drinks and an Indian DJ playing some Bollywood style stuff. Falu is originally from Mumbai, and her music has moved much towards traditional Indian music lately. This concert was part of a series called 'Naked Soul', and there were no amps or mics. The room was heavily paneled and the acoustics seemed great. The band's sound was beautifully balanced as well, and Falu sang wonderfully, with the band moving as one through the various pieces played. She has a bassist, guitar, harmonium, tabla, percussion and violin/guitar. -

The first concert I ever went to was at the Fillmore East in 1970. I went to see Santana, and the opener was Rahsaan. -

It certainly wasn't my intention to offend anyone and I'm an organ donor. Saw a cheap joke on Organissimo and went with it. -
are there jazz standards you strongly dislike?

Jeff Beck did a nice version of it: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=jeff+beck%2Fsomewhere+over+the+rainbow&oq=jeff+beck%2Fsomewhere+over+the+rainbow&aq=f&aqi=g-C7&aql=&gs_l=youtube-psuggest.3..0i33l7.4172l21560l0l22065l36l36l0l1l1l0l368l4872l12j21j1j1l35l0. -

Yes, but Pat Martino playing it live is amazing. If it EVER gets reissued on cd, Arthur Blythe did a great version on 'In The Tradition'. -

I went to one in Virginia and I'm a food fanatic and I was impressed. You could eat lunch(my sister does sometimes)just by going around the store and eating free samples! -
I had a no-show that turned out great- can I squeeze it in? In April 1974, I went to see Soony Rollins at Carnegie Hall. His special guest was supposed to be Freddie Hubbard(him again),but alas FH was a no-show. Instead, Mingus & Diz showed up!!! What followed was a rollicking set that tore the roof off the joint!

I've kept a diary of the shows I have seen. Wish I would have done that... -
At a $2Billion pricetag, to make any money the ticket prices have to go up a LOT, parking, too, etc. They could wind up like the Yanks, where going to a game is out of reach for most folks. I went to a Yankee game in 2001, and a guy on my job gave me tickets. They were 8th row between third and home. Face price of the tix? $50 Today, those seats are $1250 and frequently go empty.

I have no idea, it's almost a 40 year time period. -

I made sure to teach my now 19 year old son how to tell time. And yes, cashiers are unable to make change unless the register tells them how much the change is! I was in the supermarket a few weeks ago and an older cashier was showing a young one how to make change. Talk about befuddled looks!!! -
Probably the best I've seen this year

The train resembles the photos I've seen of trains in India, where people ride all over the train. India is also the scene of a Dow-induced tragedy(Bhopal). -
I understand what you're saying, but I look at it a bit differently. Denver went 8-8 with a very good defensive team, but an offense that needed quite a bit(It looked to me that the comeback victories Tebow got credit for were also games where the defense did a great job holding the other team.)of juice. With some cap room to possible add a receiver or two, and if the defense plays well, they could win 11+ games in a weak division. That might get a first round bye and then they have to win two games to get to the SB. Unless Elway never cared for Tebow as a QB now or in the future and this gets rid of Tebow without any flack and Elway gets someone as a future QB in the next year or two?

There's also a LOT of $$ involved. I know a guy who's in a bunch of fantasy football and baseball leagues, and last year he made some nice $$.
-
I was listening to sports talk radio for a few minutes tonight and there seems to be a snag in the deal. If so, the Jets should thank their lucky stars and back away from Tebow- he's a terrible QB whose only value to the Jets is in a wildcat formation, which should be passe pretty soon as defenses figure it out.
-
He may sit in with the Allman Brothers if he's in NYC this month- thy're big fans of his and he's sat in with them a bunch of times. IIRC, Haynes is the last man standing who played with both Bird and Trane.
-
Thank you, Big Al, for the Rangers rants(I enjoy them, it's a real fan talking), stories of your son, and of course, the music talk. You're one of the folks(among many) that make this place fun to visit.
-
At this point Peyton Manning is an unknown- is his arm regaining strength, is it just a noodle? A lot rides on that.
-
Bad news for Met fans- Fred Wilpon says in the NY Post today that he(and his family) intend to own the Mets for a long time.
-
Nice to see you back!!!
