  1. In the spirit of the Mnytime thread, I wanted to see if anyone has heard from Ed lately?
  2. Mosaics can be bought at www.mosaicrecords.com. Some stores also carry them. Sam The Record Man in Toronto, for example, has all the in-print Mosaics, but sells them at 100 percent mark-up. Seeing as your financial situation isn't so great, maybe someone on the board would be willing to make you CD-R copies of the Mosaic. Anyone!?!?!
  3. In regards to his Pacific Jazz material, I'd recommend you try to find "Moment of Truth" & "Portraits" if you're not going to buy the Mosaic. Not your typical big-band stuff in that it isn't complex. He allows his band members plenty of room to solo, and the groove is mellow. Both discs are OOP and hard to find, but I did see "Moment of Truth" at one of my local used stores the other day. If you really do want it, maybe I could pick it up for you and we can work out a trade or something.
  4. John — I have to agree. The trio sides are terrific, but are not reason enough to buy the Mosaic. IMHO, the sessions with the Turrentine Bros. are his best material. Besides, those trio sessions can be had at the right price. "Us Three" is still available as a JRVG, and the Conn also pops up on occassion. "Movin' & Groovin'" is by the far the toughest of any his albums to find and might take some effort. When you do find it, however, the groove is tight!
  5. I also wanted to give this one a hearty !! While I don't own the Mosaic, I did finally find a copy of "Movin' & Groovin'" TOCJ to finish off his Blue Note material. All of this music is terrific!!! Parlan plays the blues so well. He's a lifer in my collection.
  6. I definately fit the bill here!! Call me crazy, but I like that "cool-boppish" type of jazz with lots of solos. Some day, I might break out and buy some of the first recordings, but for now I'll stick to the time period spanning 1950 until about 1975. Lots of time to get to all of the other stuff!
  7. Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse.
  8. I'm very fortunate in this respect, since I wasn't listening to jazz or even music in the 1980s. As such, I simply buy whatever's new now. That said, I don't own any RVGs. I hate 'em!! The sound is extremely loud on my stereo. I much prefer TOCJs and JRVGs. Hence, I just buy them and, many times, they constitute my first exposure to the music.
  9. I'm reviving this thread b/c I need to point out a huge oversight on AMG's part. Maybe, it's just me, but that two star rating they gave Coleman Hawkin's "Soul" album is a crock!!! This album grooves heavy, and I think Burrell lights it up. If you have ever thought about buying this one, don't hesitate. Great band!!!
  10. Hiroshi is the only retailer I buy music from anymore. He's reliable, and he can get you stuff that's sometimes OOP. I've never had a problem with him, but, even if I did, I'd still buy from him.
  11. The spring purge has begun. All prices include shipping and handling within North America. International buyers should add $2 per disc. Paypal only, please. Don Wilkerson "Preach Brother" TOCJ, "Shoutin'" JRVG, "Elder Don" JRVG (OBI included for all three) $40 Jimmy Smith "A New Sound/A New Star" TOCJ (w/ OBI) $13 Jimmy Smith "Root Down" $7 Kenny Burrell "Blue Lights" Volume One (OOP Domestic) $7 Gil Scott-Heron "Winter in America" (Charly UK) $7 Gil Scott-Heron "Pieces of a Man" (Flying Dutchman) $7 Thanks!
  12. Taking into account that each of us will probably have at least two pieces of luggage, would it be easiest to grab a cab from Newark? Airport Limo? Or is there some efficient form of public transportation that is safe? How much does a cab cost from Newark to Manhattan BTW?
  13. I think that you should listen to "Conquistador" last. Taylor's style isn't for everyone, and if you're one of those that don't particularly enjoy his music it may completely ruin your whole listening experience. "Never Let Me Go" is the best of the bunch IMHO, followed by "Sweet Honey Bee."
  14. Another question: If you could save $80 Canadian per ticket, but had to fly into Newark instead LaGuardia, would you do it? In other words, is this too much of a hassle?
  15. Well, I'll tell you this much..."Ready for Freddie" and I are getting reacquainted after being apart for a very long time. "It's nice to be home," says Freddie!
  16. That's shocking... Does anyone else feel this way about Horace Silver? I've always found his music, particularly the sixties sides, to be invigorating and soulful. To each their own, but I'll never pawn his albums off.
  17. Preach brother, preaaccch!!!! Stan. T is my favorite tenor sax player ever. His style is soulful, and his chops are second to none. If I could only have one artist's discography to take with me to the deserted island, it would be Stanley Turrentine's.
  18. Thanks, but we have enough of those (and Tim Horton's) in Toronto!!!! I'm curious...no one has mentioned anything about sites like the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, etc. Is it widely accepted that tourists should go to these sites, or are they a waste of time (not to disregard the lives that were lost at Ground Zero)?
  19. That's some SICK recommendations!!! My GF will be happy now. Thanks you guys!!!! Keep the good suggestions rollin'!
