  1. Yeah, I revived it. Blame it in the album "Dearly Beloved". It got me thinking...
  2. "Speakin' My Piece" is currently available as JRVG.
  3. His work with Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Shirley Scott on "Cookbook Vol. 1" is pretty good.
  4. Talk about a tough choice!!!! I'd still choose Jimmy Smith. While all three artists are terrific, the thing that would get me is the fact that Jimmy Smith is a true innovator. That's what I'd base my choice on though I'd still be kicking myself for missing Sweet Poppa Lou.
  5. "Soul Book/Mocha Motion" is a twofer on BGP. I don't find this music to be as eventful as his BN material, but it's still not bad. *** stars would be an accurate rating IMHO.
  6. I just re-acquired "Natural Essence" and I must say...my tastes have evolved because I now find this session to be of high quality. I'm not at the point of branding it as a "classic," but it's still pretty great. Recommended. Now, my third time owning it.
  7. I don't have the Mosaic, but I did pick up "Moment of Truth" & "Portraits" today, and this music is fantastic!!!! I'm not a big band fan at all, but this music grooves hard with plenty of tasty solos. One of these days I would love to hear the rest of his Pacific Jazz output, but for now these two will satisfy the taste buds just fine. Recommended music.
  8. A truly underrated master of the organ. I've always loved Roach because his style was so diverse. He could play in nearly any type of band. Not many organists of that era could say that. Just check "Heavy Soul" by Ike Quebec.
  9. I heard somewhere that JRVGS are limited to 5000 pressings. Is this estimate accurate?
  10. I was never a huge fan of "Joyride" simply because I'm not a huge fan of Oliver Nelson. That said, I just repurchased the "Blue Hour" sessions from a fellow board member and, while I stand by my previous claim that it's a bit of a snoozer, it still has a very nice bluesy groove to it. As many members have stated before: "Gene Harris is one soulful man!"
  11. Lonnie Smith "Drives" Kenny Burrell "Blue Lights Vol. 1" Huge scores at the local store today...I also picked up for myself "Moment of Truth" & "Portraits" by Gerald Wilson on Pacific Jazz. Let me know if there's any interest in the above discs.
  12. Thanks for looking out, Soulstation...but I got this one a few weeks back. Heavy duty burn on this album. Hiroshi Tanno also has a used copy for 1300 Yen if anyone's else is looking for it.
  13. Well, my girlfriend doesn't like much outside of one-hit soundtracks and Elton John. It's pretty difficult to get in my jazz time, so I try to listen to it during the day while I study. That said, not everyone has the luxury of having as much time as I do. Thus, I would either set up your stereo in a separate room and designate specific times of the night as "Jazz listening" times, OR I would buy a discman and listen to jazz on the way to work (or even at work? Some companies let this fly).
  14. Even if it didn't work, why not just send it back?!?!?!
  15. I'm just wondering...does Blue Note/EMI or Toshiba Japan produce a set amount of Conns, JRVGs, and TOCJs? Or do they play it by ear, and only produce as much as they think they can sell?
  16. I've really been on a Stan T. kick lately. I'd have to concur with all of these choices, but if I was to pick one that I love above all else then I'd pick two! "Never Let Me Go" & "Dearly Beloved".
  17. Now that's brilliant!!!!
  18. Maybe that's it...either way, it's a quality guide.
  19. Chuck, You might want to buy a Fodder's Guide to this area. I've always found these travel guides to be extremely helpful when I travel.
  20. What about a used copy of "Money Jungle"? Man, that's one remnant of the BNBB that will never be forgotten.
  21. This is an excellent idea!!! Now, others can find out how difficult it really is to buy "just one more" jazz cd. In my death, I will give rise to a cult following of music-buying addicts throughout the world.
  22. -_- zzzzz...give it a rest before you turn this thread into war zone for every member of the board to pick you off. Does anyone really care about the DEEP thread?
  23. I think everyone should just calm down. Jim A. has done a tremendous job with this message board. He has given us all a new forum to learn about jazz. What's more is he hasn't ever demanded that anyone "buy his CD" or "attend one his shows" to be part of this community. I think that you're way out of line in your name-calling. If you don't like what goes on here then get the f*ck out!!! Otherwise, take whatever happened on this chin and accept that not everyone on this board wants to be your friend. Ya dig!?!?!
  24. Conn/TOCJ/JRVG? Let me know if you'd be willing to trade/sell.
