  1. Say the word, Jim!!!! This website is my addiction...
  2. I was just sitting here listening to some Miles for the first time in a few months, and his music never ceases to amaze me. I was curious about some of your favorites. My personal faves are: "In a Silent Way" & "Jack Johnson", though I can't knock the big three of the 50s either (KOB, Milestones & Round About Midnight). Genius!!!
  3. Hey Folks, What do you all think of the idea of having an "Artist of the Week" thread? While the "Album of the Week" has been great, I think some general comments about underplayed artists might not hurt either. Any thoughts?
  4. Alec, I'd definately buy the Parlan or Turrentine sets. Very soulful music, and I know you'll like this stuff based on our past trades/sales.
  5. Hey Folks, Well, here is my choice...this is the first Horace Silver disc that I owned and, though I bought it largely because I liked the cover, it turned out to be an absolutelty terrific album with an all-star band. While just about any Horace Silver disc could be album of the week for March 14 - 20, this one holds sentimental value and is probably the most underrated of the lot. It also led me to explore many of the other band member's solo albums as well. Enjoy!!! Quoting AMG's review: "Horace-Scope is the third album by Horace Silver's classic quintet — or most of it, actually, as drummer Louis Hayes was replaced by Roy Brooks starting with this session. The rhythmic drive and overall flavor of the group are still essentially the same, though, and Horace-Scope continues the tight, sophisticated-yet-swinging blueprint for hard bop pioneered on its two classic predecessors. The program is as appealing as ever, and even though not as many tunes caught on this time — at least not on the level of a "Juicy Lucy" or "Sister Sadie" — Silver's writing is tuneful and tasteful. The best-known selections are probably the lovely closing number "Nica's Dream," which had been around for several years but hadn't yet been recorded on a Silver LP, and the genial, laid-back opener "Strollin'." But really, every selection is full of soulful grooves and well-honed group interplay, the qualities that made this band perhaps the top hard bop outfit of the early '60s. Silver was in the midst of a hot streak that wouldn't let up for another few years, and Horace-Scope is another eminently satisfying effort from that period."
  6. Thanks for the encouraging comments everyone. I was thinking like the "Album of the Week" thread, we should also get an "Artsits of the Week" thread started up. There's so many under-appreciated jazz musicians, and even producers, that deserve their own threads. What does everyone think?
  7. Well, I choose none. My picks are: Allman Brothers Band (one of their albums was in the sixties, wasn't it?) Cream Jimi Hendrix Experience
  8. I'm going with Horace Silver next week...then I get to choose the person who posts the week after, correct?
  9. Exactly. I do think, however, that if you post your loose discs (those not Mosaics...), you'll sell a good portion of them. I really liked Marty's idea...he sold everything at the same price ($6 per disc?), but I betcha' he must have sold 75% of that collection which was initially nearly 600 cds. You might want to consider this route. Selling over 1000 discs off over Ebay will be time consuming and cost you $$ to boot. Post the Mosaics on Ebay, but the others on here. I think that would be a happy medium that even your father would appreciate.
  10. Hal, I'd do more research on your stuff before you sell it. Those Basie sets will get you good coin. That said, however, jazz is jazz and I'm not sure you can expect to necessarily get "market value" on this board. Most sellers here tend to sell their stuff at lower prices before they move it to ebay just as a courtesy to the fellow jazz fan. Lon (jazzbo), for example, has offered OOP Mosaics at quite reasonable prices on here when he could've gotten much more on Ebay. I, myself, even sold the Tina Brooks Mosaic for $80. In short, you need to decide what you want to become of the music. Selling on Ebay will most cerrtainly get you more, but there's always the risk that people are simply buying the music to re-sell at a higher price (something I gather your Dad would oppose...). It's up to you, but just know there's a good bunch of people here that would gladly give your father's collection a good home. Maybe, you should try posting your list in this section. I know Marty (MartyJazz) did this a couple months back, and did very well for the widow he was selling the music for.
  11. Ed, I just noticed that both threads regarding your personal issues have been deleted. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that I hope everything is okay. Stay strong, brother!!!
  12. Hey Folks, I just got the three Japanese albums available ("Opener," "Bone & Bari," & "Vol. 3"). This is simply fantastic music. Fuller is a truly underrated jazz performer. Any thoughts?
  13. I'm wondering what everyone thinks of Sweet Poppa Lou's material after "Blues Walk", but before "Here 'Tis". Fire away..."Lightfoot," "Time Is Right," "Sunny Side Up," "Gravy Train," etc.
  14. Forget the RVGs...buy Gloria Coleman "Soul Sisters" on Impulse! B)
  15. akanalog was selling this badboy on the board a month or so back.
  16. I still disagree. I feel like the producers are running out of ideas. Maybe the new cast members will spruce things up a bit.
  17. I hope so! IMHO, Season Four was a huge disappointment.
  18. "It's my precioussssss...!" PM on both the Jordans.
  19. And so...the empire crumbles. At least, inmates at Riker's Island will be getting quality cookies.
  20. I'm doing Horace Silver next week, but you'll have to wait for the title.

  22. One of the casualties of this trend you'd think would be the Andrew Hill set. The majority of these sessions have been reissued in some form at one time or another, have they not?
