  1. This story sounds similiar to what happened to "Sam the Record Man" in Canada. At one time, Sam's was the country's foremost retailer of music, but they drastically went downhill with the creation of new stores such as HMV, Music World & Sunrise. Eventually, Sam's closed all their Canadian stores save the mega store in downtown Toronto. It still exists there, and has one of the best selections of jazz that I've ever seen, but the story was still sad as the chain was family owned for over 40 years.
  2. How can anyone not appreciate the groove in Sweet Poppa Lou's soul-jazz sessions? I'm listening to "Scorpion" right now, and Melvin Sparks is lighting the first track up. What a genius!!! Shame on AMG!
  3. I didn't want to be the imbecile to say this, but the connection was that Hogan entered the ring with "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" as his theme.
  4. I recently bought the Fathead Newman disc, and it's terrific. As Harold_Z observed, this session is a classic!!!
  5. "Born to be Blue" is another terrific album...just upgraded to the Mini LP. This CD amazes me every time I listen to it. B)
  6. In searching through the archives, I've noticed that there has been very little mention of Bobby Timmons on this board. Thus, I'm starting this thread on his behalf. What are some of your favorites? Mine, of course, are there great tunes "Moanin'" and "Dat Dere".
  7. Boy, this is a tough one, but... "Machine Gun" "Hey Joe" "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" ...and, though I can't technically make anymore selections, here's a vote for "Freedom" & "Red House".
  8. Another vote for the Sam Lazar ARGO sessions. Very nice stuff.
  9. Hey folks, I spotted this at the local used store. Does anyone need it? Maybe, we can work something out.
  10. I certainly wasn't trying to put down AAJ. Rather, I was giving my reasons for preferring this board. It's just one man's opinion. If some of you enjoy that site, all the power to you.
  11. I don't thnk the discussions at AAJ even compare to the ones generated here. After the BNBB closed, I frequented AAJ daily, but I now find this board to be much more informative. When I look at AAJ, I see a lot of people just starting with jazz. At Organissimo, however, many of the board members have been listening to jazz for a very long time. Thus, I almost never pop over there anymore.
  12. Mint, played once. Paypal only, please. $8 (s/h included).
  13. Tom, I'm also very saddened by this news. Hopefully, everything works out for the best. Keep strong, and my prayers are with you and your family. Best Wishes, Allan
  14. Don't forget — Lee also plays on "Mothership".
  15. "That's Where It's At" shouldn't still be sitting there, particularly in this format. Some please scoopt this up. This is my fav. Stan T. album!
  16. This badboy looks tasty!! I've heard, at least, half the material, but I need a push. I'm looking to make a "final purchase" for a little awhile and it's between that or some Bobby Timmons (This here is...)/Junior Mance (Soulful Piano of Junior Mance) discs. What should I do?
  17. How's the Amy Select anyways? It looks tasty! B)
  18. I like to hear when ye' friend Paul has gone for a dip in a pool of grease. I also dig this album — thought better than "Black Talk" it is not!
  19. Does anyone have this title to sell/trade? If so, PM me. Thanks.
  20. Hi Folks, I searched the archives for specific reviews of this title, but didn't find anything that discussed this album in any substantial detail. Thus, what is everyone's opinion of this album? I use to have the vinyl, but I haven't heard it in quite some time. I just purchased the Japanese Mini LP from a fellow board member, but I'm also interested to hear what people think of it. As I recall, this was a fantastic album with a terrific band. Thanks.
  21. This was reissued as an Argo Mini LP yesterday (I believe...). Either way, I use to own this LP and thought it was good. I'll be buying the disc.
  22. My Top Six: Grant's First Stand Green Street Grantstand Green Street Alive! Idle Moments
  23. I just thought that I'd mention that "Mo Greens, Please" was reissued today as a JRVG. I'm looking forward to hearing this version. Great album! Great Cover as well...
  24. I'm not even married and I can't get away with this stuff.
